MONUMENTAL CITY HOUSE IN HISTORIC OTROBANDA, WILLEMSTAD

Curacao Villa Rental Photos and Description

Two-Story Refurbished Building, Dutch Colonial Architecture.

The villa is very nice for a couple wanting to stay in Curacao for a week or more.

You will stay in you own historic house instead of a hotel room.

From the villa you can explore downtown Willemstad and the country-side with all the beaches as well. From the villa you can easily walk to restaurants, the waterfront, the St. Ana Bay (where you can see the ships come in and leave), the cinema, bars and shops. You can experience the culture and architecture of Curacao, you are in the middle of it.

A family and a group of friends can also stay at this villa. The villa has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms available, a living with dining, modern (small) kitchen (total space indoors 1750 sq ft. ) Porch, 550 sqft.

The villa is downtown so you can expect a lot of sounds (cars passing by on the street before the house and music in the cars), especially in the evening nights of the weekends.

The family bought the house to set up a small Jazz Club as they had seen in Lisbon, Portugal where they have been for a year. The idea was an informal place where jazz musicians and jazz lovers can come together to play and listen to jazz. There has been several jazz performances of the jazz band the owner participated in with his cornet. The Jazz band 'Otrobanda Jazz 5' did practice every monday in the evening between 7:00 and 10:00 . At 10:00, as respect to the neighbours, they stopped their practice and chat together about music and politics, the popular issues on the island. They enjoyed their self-earned beer, their self-earned money with the performances at the house.

The Ten Ham family also lived for more then a year in the house and on many evenings you could hear the piano rehearsals of their teenage son Willem ten Ham jr, a talented piano player.

It was like history repeated it self. Otrobanda has a lot of music history. Talented composers and piano players like the De Palm family and Wim Statius Muller used to live here and play their music.

The Ten Ham family lives now in Aruba.

In a walking distance to all historic places of Willemstad, harbour, Annabay, Kura Hulanda, Rif Fort, shops, restaurants, cinemas and casinos. This charming, centuries old, Otrobanda property, is very suitable for a real downtown living. Yet from here it's easy to reach the beaches, diving and snorkling spots or a golf course. It's also suitable as a starting point for walking and biking tours.

The revival of charming Otrobanda is coming even more visible as more properties are now being refurbished.

We fell in love with the house for it's colonial charms (all the wooden white louvre doors and windows) and it's location in the middle of down town Otrobanda. It is a special feeling having lived in a house with so much history.

In the house several families from Curacao have lived before. At a certain moment for certain time even 3 families have been living here on house-number 38 (the apartment in the back, 40 (the 2 story house) and 42 (the left small building).

There has been also a fruit grocery in the house (still left is the shop plate hanging on the wall of the small courtyard). The house has also been for 10 years an antique shop. You will see a black antique cabinet in the dining area, the owners of the antique shop left behind. The house has iron gates for the windows and gates on the first floor. This is the result of the 80's when the Otrobanda neighbourhood was not a safe place to live and lot of the historic buildings were in a sad status. Now it is safe to live, work and walk around. Sometimes we have missed some things (our bike and our water-hose) taken away from our garden by one of the homeless drug addicts Willemstad still have.

Time has changed and many historic buildings have been restored and still many in restoration or waiting for the one to fell in love with it's charms.

The Kura Hulanda hotel is a very beautiful restoration. You can walk from to house to Kura Hulanda and have dinner there under the trees. Kura Hulanda has also a small museum where you can learn about the slavery history of Curacao.

We as owners think the house is a great place to stay for a couple from abroad that likes to travel and explore places for a while and escape the winter period in their country as well. Curacao has so much to offer and to experience. You can do that all from this unique place and feel for a while like a local.

Otrobanda (meaning ‘the other side’) is on the opposite side of St. Anna Bay. This district was developed in the 18th century. The main shopping street in Otrobanda is the Breedestraat is on a walking distance from the house. The house is also short walk from Kurá Hulanda, one of the best restorations of Otrobanda. An entire section of Otrobanda’s dilapidated slum was transformed into a magnificently renovated historical district, the best example of Dutch colonial architecture in the Caribbean. Other interesting places within a short walk: The Riffort, which was built in 1828 to protect the city. Its restored ramparts now shelter Riffort Village, a shopping and entertainment center that offers panoramic views of Punda and the sea.

The Brionplein (Brion Plaza), which is the centerpiece of Otrobanda’s waterfront. You can sit on a café terrace and have a picturesque view of the gabled houses of Punda opposite. When cruise ships are docked in the harbor, merchants set up stalls along the waterfront. Willemstad Otrobanda is improving on its image.
