Perfect family rental for a week at the beach...
This was a perfect rental for our extended family of 10 to gather at the beach. The house feels like home. When the owners planned this house, they did it right. The house is beautifully decorated. The kitchen is well equipped with all the accessories required for cooking and entertaining. The floor plan was perfect for gathering and separating when everyone needed space. There are three floors. The main floor has the kitchen and dining area and a great family room. It was a great floor for everyone to hang out. The top floor has another good sized family room, for hanging out. Our 1 teenager found it to be a nice escape wanted to escape to catch up on summer reading. The entry level floor had four bedrooms, which was perfect for two families with 4 kids. There was also a small sitting area on this floor that the younger cousins liked to watch cartoons. The pool is smaller, but perfect for hanging out when you want an alternative to the beach. The grandparents with us were not big fans of the beach, so the pool was a nice option to have for them.
The house sits on a seawall, but Driftwood Beach is a half minute walk. There is a consistent breeze so you could sit on the back deck and watch the dolphins and pelicans feed. We saw a lot of marine life. The beach had a definitive high and low tide. Our our kids liked swimming in the high tide and exploring the marine life in the low tide. They were occupied with exploring the island in a golf cart and seeing/touching the marine life. We saw blue crabs, hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs, fish, many starfish and sand dollars, an aligator on the Melrose golf course ponds, and the loggerhead turtles. It's nesting time. Time it right and you can watch the turtles hatch.
If you've never been to Daufuskie, it is very laid back. Flipflops, tshirts and shorts. Anything more and you are over dressed. Marshside Mama's and the Daufuskie Crab House are your typical "hole in the wall" restaurants, but the food is low country wonderful. There is a large sandbar visible from the back deck. If you call www.commanderzodiac.com, they will pick you up off the Driftwood Beach to visit the sand bar, or take you to see the dolphins "strand" feeding. The Melrose golf course is well maintained and challenging.
You'll find the owners to be very responsive. They put together a nice packet to prepare our visit. The local contacts, Ed and Janice were wonderful and very accomodating.
