Laurie, Paul and Mary have been friends for 25 years, so when they first saw the cabin and site, they knew it was a place that they would like share and enjoy together, as well as return to many times.
All of us lived in Marinette in the past, and now in or near Madison, WI. Mary with her son, John, a CSA farmer, and Laurie and Paul on a property the looks more like it is in northern Wisconsin than in Madison. Mary moved from Marinette in 1990, and Laurie and Paul in 2009, all to take enticing jobs. While Laurie is an Oncology nurse, Paul a Pharmacist, and Mary a Realtor, all greatly enjoy outdoor activities and this area has an abundance of them. Cross-country skiing, biking, hiking, whitewater canoeing, gardening, cooking and birding are our favorite hobbies. Laurie loves lighthouses and writing. Paul plays the violin and enjoys teaching pharmacy students, and Mary has chickens and loves vegetable gardening and ballroom dancing. Laurie and Paul organized the first Menominee River Century bike ride and ran it for 20+ years, hiked in Alaska several times and biked across Italy. Mary has skied the American Birkebeiner 5 times, hiked the Grand Canyon twice after having both hips resurfaced, and has worked as a Naturalist.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2009
Having lived in the area for many years, we knew what a peaceful, beautiful area it was, and have enjoyed so many great recreational activities in the area that we knew it to be a fine vacation spot. That has proven to be true too! We all enjoy our "new" get-away place very much, and never tire of gathering around the fire and enjoying our view of the bay as the sun goes down.
It also is far enough north that we really feel like we are "getting away", and on a vacation. Yet it is close enough to larger metropolitan areas that we have access to the best of both worlds.
Where else can one look out over the water and feel like you are standing on a rise above an ocean, and still be in Wisconsin? The yard is set about 15 feet above the water level for an outstanding view of Lake Michigan, and on a clear day or night, a view of Door County 15 miles away. At night the lights of the small Door County towns sparkle and shimmer on the water at your feet, and the stars and moon do the same from above. You will feel like you are in a park with your own personal entrance to the water via our private boardwalk/dock. If you sit along the shore for a while, eagles, shorebirds and waterfowl will probably be spotted. Everything from the huge white pelicans, and bald eagles, to terns, ducks, rails and wading shorebirds. In the spring and early summer the peepers, frogs and toads may serenade you after dark.
You can enjoy the rustic, rural delights yet still go inside to the beautiful, welcoming charm of Green Shutters.
Canoeing, rafting on the Peshtigo or Menominee Rivers, whitewater canoeing an hour away, birdwatching, 9 golf courses within 50 miles, one a mile away. Flat terrain makes biking easy, campfire overlooking the water, telescope for viewing the night sky, snowshoes available, concerts on summer evenings at the Menominee marina, shallow water by shore, eagle sightings common, great kitchen for cooking, relaxation...
