Quietude Cottage offers privacy without being isolated. (See Quietude Cottage's FaceBook page for more photos of house and area.) You will love returning to the cottage after your day of exploring the Shenandoah Valley. Located in Mount Sidney, VA, Quietude is a 1920s seven room cottage style house, with original wood floors throughout. Partially open walls in the living areas create an inviting space. The cottage is located on 1 1/2 acres and there are 4 soothing water features. Take time to swing on the front porch or beside one of the goldfish ponds. (Keep watchful eye over young children around ponds. The ponds are up to two feet deep and the pond liners are extremely slippery.) Relax while watching the fish play or the birds at the feeders, you may even see a bullfrog. Or walk up the hill to the swing in the back yard and enjoy views of the neighboring fields & woods. Enjoy a meal or nap on the comfy sofa or in the hammock on the spacious patio and listen to the music of the waterfall. Flavor up your meal with a few leaves from the herb garden by the patio. (All bed, bath and kitchen linens provided.)

I am an artist with many interests. I like to travel and paint. But I also enjoy home projects and gardening. I am retired and can choose what I want to do each day.
I have grandchildren in Virginia and California, so I like to spend time on each coast. Hiking and kayaking are favorite activities. When you stay in my Quietude Cottage, you will see evidence of my varied endeavors and interests.

North Carolina natives, our family visited the Shenandoah Valley often when my children were young. My daughter lives about a mile from this house, so it is a natural, easy place for me to stay when I'm in Virginia. I love the beauty of the Valley and there are so many ways to enjoy your time here. Lots of wineries have developed over the past few years and they are fun to visit. Easy access to the Blue Ridge mountains, National Forests, Harrisonburg, Staunton and Charlottesville is a bonus.
Tranquility. I find it beside water. I like having the water features near the living room window so in warm weather, with the windows open, I hear the water falling into the pond and in winter I enjoy viewing the water or ice. Visiting birds like the water too! Bird feeders help assure lots of birds in spring & summer and some year round.
The area is quiet and that contributes to the peaceful atmosphere. Again, the house and outside areas offer privacy without isolation. I think the house and yard are beautiful and have enjoyed projects that sustain and improve on that beauty. Have lots more projects on my list!
Downtown Staunton is a favorite place to visit. I particularly like the art galleries and restaurants.
Quietude cottage hosts the VERY BEST guests. Everyone has been so pleasant and left the house is excellent shape. I love finding new ideas that I think guests will like. I appreciate all the great reviews and learned a lot from the one negative one. Lots of other guests have left positive comments in my guest book. Putting the cottage on VRBO/HomeAway was a good move for me!
My family had a lovely time on our 3-night stay at Quietude. The weather was cooperative, so my nine-year-old daughter and nearly four-year-old son spent much of the weekend playing outside. My daughter romped and frolicked all over the property, making full use of the many varied outdoor spaces (hammocks, trees, gardens) and letting her imagination run wild. My son greatly enjoyed playing with the outdoor toys (tricycle, little tyke car, and all the trucks in the sandbox). It was Easter weekend, and Quietude was a fantastic spot for an Easter egg hunt! The house was comfortable and we had everything that we needed. We were thankful for the beautiful scenery (rolling hills and farmland), the soothing gardens and water features, the time spent with nature, and especially for the location, which was convenient for many day-time excursions - to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Shenandoah National Park, Waynesboro, Staunton, PolyFace Farm, and so much more! When we left, my son cried and was already asking when we could come back again.
My wife and I are from Minnesota. In search of a more moderate climate, we decided to winter in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Quietude was the perfect getaway, exceeding all of our expectations. We felt comfortable in Elizabeth's lovely, country home the moment we stepped through the front door. Quietude is more folksy than fancy, on 1.5 acre, surrounded by rolling farmlands. Comfortable and well equipped, especially the kitchen, the home is tastfully decorated with antiques and the impressive, local and travel inspired art from the hand of the owner.
We spent January and February in the Valley and loved every minute of our time there. Quietude is located in Mt. Sydney perhaps 15 miles from the 25,000 population town of Staunton. I have always lived in large, urban areas but found plenty to do and everything we needed in the area. Staunton is very cosmopolitan for a small town. There are a variety of great eateries, coffee shops, antique shops, specialty food and wine shops, galleries, amazing architecture in an area rich with history and local culture. The Shenandoah has long been an incubator for bluegrass, country and blues and the area is teaming with musicians and music venues. And, there is world class hiking and outdoors fun everywhere in the mountains and surrounding wilderness.
Our winter in Virginia was everything we hoped for. We had several visitors during our stay and they all loved the house and area. We cooked up a storm, hiked, bar hopped, walked our dogs in wonderful Gypsy Hill Park, met and played music with friendly locals, and yes, Virginia is for lovers. Quietude is a great romantic getaway. Elizabeth, the owner who we have never actually met, was a great resource and always responsive to our e-mail questions our two month stay was the longest getaway we had ever take. I would absolutely recommend Quietude to anyone seeking a relaxed, laid-back holiday. Our time at Quietude has filled us with priceless memories. We love the place and hope to return soon.
My family and I were attending a wedding in Waynesboro on Friday and wanted to have a weekend retreat in the mountains. There were five of us - my husband and I, our two 8 year olds and our 4mth old. There were plenty of things around the house to keep the kids busy, they loved the yard, games, puzzles and back staircase. The house is filled with all of the comforts of home. We were even able to entertain my parents for breakfast which our kids later told us was the best part of the weekend. The home has a very warm feel to it, partly because of all the lovely art hanging throughout the house. I highly recommend Quietude, we are looking forward to our next stay.
We had a lovely stay at Elizabeth's cottage. Her home is spotless and the gardens are beautiful. Quietude really is the perfect way to describe the place. We had dinner in town (just a few minutes drive), and then we spent a relaxing evening under the stars, my husband strumming the guitar while our son walked around the water gardens and swung on the hammock.... Thanks so much for everything, Elizabeth!
We recently stayed at Quietude Cottage with our two young children ages 5 and 7. We had a fantastic time. The house was clean and had everything we needed...from games, to art supplies, to a wide variety of videos to choose from....to a fully stocked kitchen! There is plenty of space to wander/run and lovely little niches to spend some quiet time with the fish and wildlife. We visited the Shenandoah NP and Polyface during our stay...both very accessible and a lovely drive. In general, the owner does an excellent job meeting the needs of all who stay at her cottage. It has a cozy, comfortable feel to it. I would definitely return again.
We orchestrated a last-minute perfectly relaxing family get-together at Quietude cottage with our adult sons. Elizabeth is a wonderful hostess, and is good with communications. The house is well-equipped and comfortably furnished. The kitchen had everything we needed to make a nice home-cooked meal. We particularly enjoyed sitting on the back patio with its hammock and listening to the water garden. Watching hummingbirds and goldfinches from the patio and front porches was an added bonus. We went to a play at the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton (20 mins away), bicycled on the Blue Ridge Parkway, fly fished in a small stream outside Waynesboro (30 mins away), and played board games from the well-stocked game library. We will return to Quietude, but the next time we plan to stay a little longer just to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of the house. Thanks for a great weekend!
