House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

You will love returning to 'Quietude Cottage,' after your day of exploring the Shenandoah Valley. Located at 386 Cider Mill Road, Mount Sidney, VA, this spacious house is a 1920s seven room cottage style house, with original wood floors throughout. Partially open walls in the living areas create an inviting space. The cottage is located on 1 1/2 acres and there are 4 soothing water features. Take time to swing on the front porch or beside one of the goldfish ponds. Relax while watching the fish play or the birds at the feeders, you may even see a bullfrog. Or walk up the hill to the swing in the back yard and enjoy views of the neighboring fields & woods. Enjoy a meal or nap on the comfy sofa on the spacious patio and listen to the music of the waterfall. Flavor up your meal with a few leaves from the herb garden by the patio.

The two bedrooms and the bath are upstairs. The master bedroom has a Queen bed, raised ceiling, air conditioner, ceiling fan and TV. The second bedroom has a double bed and air conditioner.There is a shared full bath with tub/shower off the common hallway.

Bring your favorite DVDs or watch a movie from my 'chick flick' collection on the 40' Flat Screen TV in the living room.

Air conditioners both downstairs and upstairs in the bedrooms.

A washer and dryer are available for your use in the basement/cellar.

You are welcome to use one of my handmade quilts if the nights are cool. My original oil and watercolor paintings decorate the house.

The house and location is perfect for Cyclists, JMU/EMU/MBC parents, Hikers, or Sightseers. The area is a favorite for road cyclists with an amazing number of paved backroads. A county road map is available at the house.

I am an artist with many interests. I like to travel and paint. But I also enjoy home projects and gardening. I am retired so I can choose what I want to do each day.

I have grandchildren in Virginia and California, so I like to spend time on each coast. Hiking and kayaking are favorite activities. When you stay in my Quietude Cottage, you will see evidence of my varied endeavors and interests.

Why Elizabeth Tuttle chose Shenandoah

North Carolina natives, our family visited the Shenandoah Valley often when my children were young. My daughter lives about a mile from this house, so it is a natural, easy place for me to stay when I'm in Virginia. I love the beauty of the Valley and there are so many ways to enjoy yourself here. Lots of wineries have developed over the past few years and they are fun to visit. Easy access to Harrisonburg, Staunton and Charlottesville is a bonus.

What makes this house unique

Tranquility. I find it beside water. I like having the water features near the living room window so in warm weather, with the windows open, I hear the water falling into the pond and in winter I enjoy viewing the water or ice. Visiting birds like the water too! Bird feeders help assure lots of birds in spring & summer and some year round.

The area is quiet and that contributes to the peaceful atmosphere. I think the house and yard are beautiful and have enjoyed projects that sustain and improve on that beauty. Have lots more on my list!

Downtown Staunton is a favorite place to visit. I particularly like the art galleries and restaurants.

Lovely, lovely older home but has all the comforts we needed. The outside is so relaxing with its 3 water gardens, multiple bird feeders, comfy outdoor furniture and privacy! I even took a nap outside one afternoon! Lots of charm and character; lovely also to walk down the street and have the cows come greet you. Highly recommend!
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Sightseeing, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway
Owner's Response: So glad Sue and her husband had a relaxing stay. Especially pleased that they liked the new comfy furniture on the patio and the privacy there. Certainly a pleasant place for a nap. I greatly appreciate their recommendation and hope they return soon!

Relax at Quietude

The property was pretty much just as we'd imagined it, and the owner was very helpful and friendly in email contact. There's plenty to do in the house, provided you're not dependent on TV, the internet or your mobile phone (signal wasn't brilliant) - but we happily filled our evenings with reading, listening to the CDs, doing the jigsaw, playing board games. Local area is very attractive, and it was a pleasant change from city sightseeing. Very well equipped. Access to the property was easily arranged. Worth driving into W Virginia, visiting Luray Caverns and the Skyline Drive.
Unlikely to be able to return ourselves from UK unfortunately, but would recommend a stay if you're looking to slow your pace down a little.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway
Owner's Response: My British guests enjoyed exploring the area and found Quietude.... quiet and restful. Always glad to have guests pleased with my property. Hopefully, Verizon will come through with a promised upgraded wi-fi signal at Quietude by the first of the year and guests can stay connected while they relax!

Absolutely Wonderful House

We loved everything about the place. It was a true "Quietude" and touched by the master artist in every room. The house was perfect for us, very clean and cozy. The only thing I'd change is to add a half bath downstairs or in the basket room in order to accommodate more than 2 people since you have room for 6 if you use the couches/recliner. We loved the yard, ponds and the fire bowl on the cool nights. If we return to that area, this would be our first choice for a return visit. So much to see and do in the area. Our stay was much too short to do everything. A tent in the backyard would be very inviting in good weather, too. So peaceful! Thanks for helping us make our 38th anniversary vacation so wonderful! Shenandoah Valley is truly a beauty to behold.

Quietude Getaway

We used this lovely farmhouse as a meeting place to catch up with dear friends. The house and gardens exceeded our expectations. We spent time in Staunton and Lexington, visited local wineries and toured the Frontier Culture Museum. The short drive to these destinations was so enjoyable. We appreciate the ease of working with Elizabeth to book this home. Hope we will be able to return at some point.

A Peaceful Respite

Quietude was a wonderful place to stay while we attended the Oak Grove music festival. We were met by a lovely welcoming note from Elizabeth and a bowl of delicious, perfectly ripe tomatoes fresh from her garden. The house was clean, the kitchen well-equipped, the beds incredibly comfortable, and the movie selection to our liking. We very much enjoyed the beautiful water gardens around the property -- each one provided a peaceful visual vignette and a perfect setting for morning coffee and evening glass of wine. There is no other place we'd stay when in the area.
