WATERFRONT ANTIQUE FARMHOUSE IN THE BERKSHIRES + BARN GAMEROOM

Chatham Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

Farmhouse, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-9)

Waterfront Antique Farmhouse in the Berkshires with a Barn Gameroom.

Summer Fun in the sun with Watersports, State Fairs and Charming villages, Fall Blasts bring Harvest Festivals, The 'Big E' New England State Fair, Apple picking and Fall Colors! Ask about Winter carnival and ski packages; close to Butternut, Catamont and Jiminy Peak.

Our home, a 175 year restored Waterfront antique, is beautifully situated, on a tiered landscape with stone steps and sweeping lawns that border the creek. There are many pocket swimming holes and kayaking, canoeing, and fishing are feasible from the back yard. The creek has a wonderful little island on which we regularly go looking for arrow heads, and find them.

The home comfortably sleeps five in three bedrooms; there are two queen size beds and a one smaller bedroom. The living-room has an over-sized couch and a chaise to accommodate or two more. There is a sweeping deck facing the water a formal dining-room and a library filled with books, games and movies.

Chatham is an ideal location year round. The Berkshires are full of festivals and cultural activities in Spring, Summer and Fall. Highlights include; Tanglewood, Barrington Stage Company, Shakespeare and Company, Jacob's Pillow, Mahaiwe, Becket Art Center and EMPAC state of the art theater.

The autumn is its own little jewel, heralding in the harvest festivals, as the area ripens into shades of gold and wine.

The Winter brings entirely different sort of entertainment. We are close to three major ski resorts; Jiminey Peak, Catamount and Butternut. There is also ice fishing, Winter Carnivals, Horse drawn sleds.... and then the fireplace overlooking the creek when you get back to the house.

Chatham Center, a picturesque hamlet brimming with New England charm. The home is on County Route 13, considered one of the most scenic roads in New York State. Down the road is the Sheep Herding Company open to visitors, A Shaker Village and several Alpaca farms. Close by are several Zagart rated resturants, cafes and shops selling wares from the south of France. The area has amazing hiking trails and an outdoor sculpture garden on nearly 100 acres.

New England is dotted with covered bridges, dozens of charming towns and hidden treasures. As one of the antique capitals in the country the finds can be surprising and endless.

Saratoga Springs is less than an hour away, as is Lake George. Contact us and we'll give you at least a dozen more exceptional daytrip ideas. This area truly has everything.

Boston is under two hours away, as is New York in the opposite direction. Albany, capital of NY, is only a 1/2 hour away. All easy trips by car or train.

Why The Owner chose Chatham

This is our second vacation home in the area. We love the versatility of the Berkshires. The area is in full swing year round. Something for everyone regardless of age or interests.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The property is like an oasis, opening off a circular drive, through a wall of trees to a home set in a glade, on the water. It always takes my breath away.

Its a great property for quiet, peaceful or romantic getaways. We love sitting out on the deck facing the water with a glass of wine and some music in the background.

Its also an awesome home for entertaining. We canoe in the backyard and have had water gun fights with two boats. We love having parties here and have a revolving door of company when we're in residence.

Amazing creek-side hideaway in Columbia County

  • 5 of 5
My family and I (two daughters, 9 and 13, husband and a country-livin-lovin Spaniel) have now stayed here next to the Kinderhook Creek twice--once for Christmas, and once in August. Both times were spectacular for all of us. The house is a charming and durable old farmhouse that has plenty of character and light. The yard is amazing--stunning to look at, with the backdrop of the burbling creek to wake up and go to sleep to. The porch was our favorite part over the summer--it looks out over the rolling hills and the water and made for perfect outdoor dining, lounging and reading. And the location--close to town and within easy driving distance of Pittsfield, Great Barrington and Tanglwood, not to mention some truly breathtaking scenery--was ideal. Altogether, one of the most relaxing and inviting places we've stayed thus far as a family--we can't recommend it more!

Owner's Response: Hi Jenn, Thank you for loving our country home as much as we do. We find waking up to the beautiful water views is a welcome surprise, each and every time. Sometimes you feel as though you've stepped into a Norman Rockwell scape. And yet there is so much to do in the area, year round, within 15/20 minutes, in several different directions. Can't wait to get up on the slopes this year. Hope you're having a great school year. Warmest regards, Marlene

Shabby Farmhouse

Owner quick to response to email regarding renting house.

We were five adults. Our first dissappoinment was the house only has one bathroom with a shower downstairs and the bedrooms are upstairs. The bathroom upstairs only has a tub/jacuzzi. Everyone shared the only shower. Section of railing on deck loose. We cleaned the kitchen cabinets and pantry (food with past expiration date). Owners describe exterior accurately. We enjoyed the fireplace and loved hearing the stream. The house did not seem clean or well kept.

The area has great restaurants nearby but I would not recommend staying in it.

Owner's Response: Hi Clarke,

Thank you for your comments. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the creek and the fireplace. The property is accurately described, both inside and out. The home has two bathrooms; the downstairs has a brand new modern bathroom with a shower and the upstairs bathroom is also brand new with a Jacuzzi. The home is professionally cleaned every week and there is a handyman available at all times. The pictures speak for themselves as do the positive reviews we received before and after your stay. Its a very special property and we have many returning guests every year.

Warm regards,

Perfect

  • 5 of 5
We took a winter break and decided to stay here in January 2014. It was the perfect place to unplug and relax. Every corner of the home was cozy comfortable and carefully thought out. We wanted for nothing. We built a roaring fire and cooked in an awesome kitchen that had everything anyone would want or need and more. We spent lazy afternoons reading in the library and gazing out at ice blocks from the stream flowing into the river. Just fantastically healing and peaceful. I wish I was there now! We can't wait to stay here again, honestly. The owners were super easy to deal with and the surrounding towns were just adorable with a ton to explore.

Great Weekend In The Berkshires

  • 5 of 5
Dear Jerry and Marlene,

Thank you for meeting us at your vacation home. We had a great weekend!

We invited my son and his family to join us for a long weekend. Harvest festivals were everywhere. We picked apples and visited the Alpaca farm down the road. The house was cozy and had everything we needed. Its beautifully decorated. Such a pleasure to wake up and see the creek from the master bedroom. Its close enough to fully enjoy along with the sweeping lawn down the water. The kids played some very competitive badminton while we stayed there.

I borrowed one of your books from the library, but left one in return. I hope you don't mind.

Thanks again for everything.
We'll be back

Family Reunion Success!

  • 5 of 5
Thank you Jerry and Marlene!. We had a great time and we'll be back!

Your home was perfect for our family reunion. It was warm and welcoming. The kids loved the books and games in the library. The adults loved taking an evening brandy on the deck facing the water. Thank you for the apple pie. That went down fast.

Your suggestions were spot on. We went zip lining and hiking. The local drives through the changing countryside were beautiful. We even made it out to Saratoga Springs for lunch one day. The kids had a great time just hanging out on island, playing pretend. Did you say the creek is stocked? I'd love to stay over again in the spring when the fish start biting.

Best,
Tom and family

Owner's Response: Hi Tom,

Glad you had a great holiday. It was our pleasure to host your family at our vacation home. We offer discount incentives to returning clients.

The creek is stocked. April is a great time to test the waters. Spring in the Berkshires is really beautiful.

Disappointed

  • 1 of 5
The owners were most friendly and helpful prior to renting.

However, when we arrived at 2 the house was not ready as promised, so we had to kill time until 4:30 while the cleaning was finished. They had assured us that we could come early and have most of the day there.

The house is advertised to sleep 9. This includes a futon in the "game room" which is not habitable either for recreation or sleeping. The futon mattress was moldy as was the room. There is no appropriate place to sleep in the living room. There is not a sleep sofa; the chaise is too short for a grown person. There are beds for a maximum of 5 people in this house. We are relaxed travelers who love the outdoors and rustic surroundings, but there were 9 of us including children. The owners were aware of this. Two of the children slept on mattresses we brought on the floor of the master bedroom which was fine. Two adults had no choice but to sleep on the floor on the cushions of the living room furniture which was a most uncomfortable arrangement.

The jets in the tub did not operate, the alarm was beeping intermittently, the outside door to the kitchen fell off its hinges when we opened it so we kept it closed and with fixed kitchen windows there was no ventilation. We were unable to lock the house. The railing on the deck was loose. These were manifestations of the lack of attention to the general state of repair. Perhaps they would have been repaired had we emailed the owners who were in London, but the house should not have been left to renters in this condition.

The house is located in a beautiful part of the country with much to do that is amply described by the owners and their renters, but I would not recommend staying in it.

Owner's Response: Dear Cena,

This review came as a surprise, considering that my husband met you and your husband at the property, the day of the rental. You both seemed very happy with everything during the walk through. Although we were working in London, for most of August, we were available by cell phone. My husband made a point of telling your husband that we would respond 24/7. We sincerely wish you had contacted us during your stay, so we could have addressed your concerns.

Occasionally there are delays with the cleaning service, that are beyond our control. Under the circumstances, you were invited to leave your luggage and enjoy the property/town.

We have had as many as twelve renters comfortably sleep in house, without complaint. Both the sofa and the chaise are often used as sleeping options. I've slept on either one, in-front of the fire, on occasion. There is always extra bedding available in the trunk and armoire. We are genuinely sorry, you felt there were not enough options for your family. The barn is also used regularly in the summer months. We will in-fact be converting the barn, to a full guest cottage for the next season. So the property will consist of a full house with cottage.

There was a popped circuit on the breaker panel that operated the Jacuzzi tub and the smoke detector needed a new battery. Both problems were corrected within minutes. I am so sorry that you didn't contact us during your stay, so this could have been quickly remedied.

We welcome all reviews and genuinely hope everyone enjoys the home and surrounding area as much as we do.

Warm regards,
Marlene
