Here is what some of our guests have had to say about Rockridge Retreat!
'Jody and Dee were very accommodating and lovely. Everything was clean and classy. Thank you for making the start of our vacation like being at a home away from home! Our daughter was so sad to go she got tears in her eyes' - The Davidson Family
'Terrific respite from the real world - especially the puppy therapy with Django! You've done a lovely job setting things up - homey and very comfortable. - The Miglore Family
'After just a week, we consider Jody a true friend and look forward to staying here again.' - The Bliss Family
'Your home was the perfect size and location for our stay. Our daughter's grandparents also joined us and they both enjoyed sitting outside in the morning and taking in the beauty of your gardens and the wonderful quiet and peacefulness. We hope we get another opportunity to come up north so we can stay in this wonderful place.' - The Vega Family
This beautifully furnished flat is nestled in the heart of the Rockridge area of North Oakland. Nearly 1500 square feet, the apartment features a renovated kitchen and bathroom, two large bedrooms, and a spacious, airy great room, which opens out onto the private patio and lush garden.
The bedrooms contain queen beds with new pillow-top mattresses and bedside lighting for those who like to read in bed.
With furnishings that lean mid-century modern, the great room includes a sitting area with a sofa bed, cozy reading nook, large dining area with a table that seats 8-10, and mini office.
The fully equipped kitchen features everything needed to make anything from a quick bite to a gourmet dinner.
Secret Garden lives up to its name with two orange trees, a Meyer lemon and a persimmon tree, as well as rose bushes, camellias and other, more exotic, plants.
In creating Secret Garden, your hosts, Dee and Jody, have combined their carpentry and interior design skills to create the kind of vacation experience and homey atmosphere they would like for themselves. Their street is lined with refurbished older homes, inhabited by warm, friendly neighbors. They share their abode with the lovable black Lab, Django.
We all look forward to welcoming visitors from around the globe.

I work in the travel industry. As such I've been to a lot of wonderful places and experienced excellent accommodations and customer service. During a recent month long trip to the East Bay Area, I needed a place to stay that provided more room and more personality than a traditional hotel. I found it here! Great place. Quaint. Wonderful hosts. You won't be sorry!! Did I mention walking distance from everything a person could need in Rockridge!
I'm afraid to share how much we loved this place because then it will get so popular that we won't be able to use it again! Oh well. Jody and Dee deserve it. They are the perfect hosts and have done a great job with this place. Our kids did great here and loved Django the dog the place is as big as it looks in the pictures and the location is fantastic. You won't be disappointed
This beautiful apartment is comfy, elegant, and oh so convenient. The owners are friendly, and the special canine host, Django was super sweet - especially to our ten year old boy! This was our first time at a HomeAway stay and we were so comfortable, the accommodations so considerate of what a visitor might want or need that we had little idea how good we had it until we made our next stop on our trip. We pined for the comfort and set up of this lovely space. It is clear that the owners are considerate folks who are not just concerned with raking in the cash but offering visitors a wonderful experience. We would stay there again in a heartbeat. It was family friendly, there was easy access to great food and shopping, good people, and a great location. I especially loved having my morning coffee in the garden overlooking the valley and the adjacent hills. Quiet & Gorgeous! I would recommend it to my favorite folks for sure!
Dear Jody and Dee,
Thank you for a wonderful week in your “Secret Garden”. You are both such welcoming hosts and we appreciated spending time with you and Django. Thank you for going out of your way to set up the Wi-Fi for Gary’s fantasy football selection.
Your apartment has everything a person needs, from cooking utensils, very nice linens, great reading lights, comfortable beds, nice TV (with lots of channels including the PAC-12 -- Go Bears!).
We loved the art and décor. You two have a great eye for design which is both fun and comfortable.
Your location is perfect. We enjoyed hopping on to BART to see the America’s Cup and the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Getting to a Cal game was even easier.
We especially enjoyed walking the neighborhood and dining on College Avenue. A’Cote was our favorite restaurant and the pizza delivered from Rustica was very convenient (although we still like Zachary’s the best).
We took a lovely walk around Lake Temascal. You have so many options that you cannot do everything in a week. We will definitely be back.
Thanks again for your hospitality.
We wanted to explore the Rockridge neighborhood as a potential location for retirement, so we took the opportunity of a family visit to spend several days in the area with side trips for family events in San Jose. We had a car for the trips to San Jose, but we were able to leave it parked, enjoy a day in SF and walk everywhere in the neighborhood. This is a basement apartment and there are some aspects of the space that are "basement." The second bedroom has virtually no natural light -- it may have a small window at the ceiling level, I do not remember for sure -- and the ceilings are a bit low. The photos fairly represent this, and they are not negatives. There is actually a lot of natural light. There are steps down the side of the house to get to the apartment that would be challenging for anyone with mobility issues. Again, we did not find this a problem, but it is worth noting. The backyard is shared with a very friendly black Lab, but it rained the whole time we were visiting so we not did spend time outside other than walking to places in the neighborhood. I would not think of the backyard as a truly private space.
The property is very thoughtfully equipped. The owners have definitely either lived in the space for a period or have taken the time to really think about having the right towels, shelving where it is easy to find things like toilet paper, and the kitchen has a nice number of dishes of various sizes. There is plenty of silverware, and the cupboard had martini makings that we wished we had the time to use. Everything in the space is nice; there is no sense that "old stuff" is being recycled in the apartment. We had a very comfortable stay and especially enjoyed sitting around in the comfortable sitting area on our iPads doing e-mail with a morning cup of coffee.
The location is within a couple of blocks of the BART station, which is on a line that comes directly from SFO airport and goes directly into SF. Probably about 5 stops into the Financial District. The neighborhood has many restaurants, a Trader Joe's, and bakeries, coffee shops, and outdoor spots to have a beverage. Broadway is an extremely busy street and needs to be crossed with care. There is a crosswalk a block to the southwest and a stop light cross walkt a couple of blocks up to the northeast. Highly advisable you use these for visibility reasons.
Really liked the area and hope to come back again.
Never mind that the “Rockridge Garden Retreat” is quiet, spacious and spotless, beautifully furnished and well appointed- from the art that adorns the walls and the books on the shelves, to the fresh flowers in each room. Never mind that the kitchen, linen and supply closets contain everything you need. Never mind that there is a lovely little garden for relaxing in the sunshine, and a wonderful friendly dog so that you do not miss your own too much. Yes the “Rockridge Garden Retreat” has all these things, but it also has the nicest most welcoming and gracious owners you could ever want to find. Dee and Jody live upstairs and are there to help you whenever help is required. My husband and I are elderly, and the San Francisco Bay area is famously hilly. But where we could not walk, Dee drove us – whether to the BART station or to Market Hall. Jody took us to Whole Foods or Trader Joes. We have had a glorious two weeks here visiting with grandchildren and great grands. Thank you, thank you, Jody and Dee!
The area's main thoroughfare, College Avenue, is just 2 blocks away and is a popular destination that draws people from throughout the Bay Area. Lined with atmospheric cafes, gourmet restaurants and bakeries, independent bookstores and charming shops,
College Avenue is also home to the Rockridge BART station. BART offers direct trains to downtown San Francisco (20 minutes) and SFO (45 minutes). Direct busses to downtown Berkeley and the University of California campus also run frequently down College Avenue. And, if you’re driving, unrestricted street parking and freeway access 2 blocks away make this flat a perfect location.
