New Marlborough House Rental Photos and Description
Historical Home on breathtaking property, gardens, central air, special spot.
It's rare to find a home like this... built in 1791, this elegant Greek Revival was a former Bed & Breakfast known for its comfort and style. Norman Rockwell could have painted it. This home is a perfect gathering place for friends and family, just down the road from the award-winning Old Inn on the Green restaurant and the Southfield Store. Just 10 mins to Great Barrington, our location is a short drive to Tanglewood, Jacobs Pillow, Berkshire Theater Festival, Shakespeare & Company, BSC, the Mahaiwe theater, museums, shopping, and area restaurants. We are near lakes, biking, hiking, kayaking, waterfalls, and a 'best kept secret' swimming hole!
The house has remarkable wide plank wood floors, 3 fireplaces, and many charming seating areas, including one with a piano. Each of the 5 bedrooms has it's own updated bath, 2 with deep soaking tubs enclosed by tumbled marble. 4 of the bedrooms have queen beds with fine linens, the 5th bedroom is very private on the 3rd floor, with a king bed or two twins. It has a skylight, and a large tiled bath with soaking tub. The 6th bedroom is currently a sitting room on the first floor, with a pullout sofabed.
There is a large back deck off the kitchen with a grill, overlooking beautiful grounds that are dotted with 75 ft. blue spruce trees. (The trees literally said 'move here' when we bought the house 14 years ago:-) The land is flat and even has a baseball field. And there's a stream on the property!
The country kitchen has an grand old fashioned pantry, a separate eating area, and breakfast bar. It's not fancy, no granite, but people say there's something about it that feels simple and charming. There is also an office in an adjacent space, with wireless, and a printer.
Our dining room seats 14, at a long country french oak table. There are beams on the ceiling.. you really think you are in Provence. It's a beautiful room that inspires great meals and conversation.
The library is a place you can get lost in, with rare books on all kinds of subjects. The fox hunting oil painting is a focal point. We also keep many board games here, for you to enjoy.
Off of the large entry foyer, which is almost a room of it's own, is living room with fireplace that feels like a french salon. A door leads out to the oversized screened porch, which overlooks the garden. The porch is a favorite hangout. Our children loved to sleep on it when they were young.
This is a home that has been lived in and loved. There is a warmth to it which is why, when we ran it as an inn, guests came again and again. It is a special place for family gatherings, fall foliage is brilliant, and Thanksgiving dinner, or Christmas in New England would be magical! It's Norman Rockwell come to life!

About Barbara or Doug
Born and bred in NY we wanted a change from the fast paced world of advertising and wanted to raise our kids in a simpler place that had natural beauty and a sophisticated culture. So my husband quit his job and went to the Culinary Institute of America and I became a freelance Creative Director| Writer. He ran the inn and together, we raised our children here. They are now almost grown and on their own summer adventures. I am involved in our community-- on the Advisory Board of our stellar Berkshire International Film Festival, (it runs the last weekend in May) and on the board of directors of the Berkshire Film and Media Commission. I am also on the Board of Visitors for Miss Hall's School. We have traveled extensively and love to try new places. We have rented many vacation homes using this website and have loved our experiences. We hope you choose to stay at our home. You won't be disappointed!
Barbara or Doug purchased this house in 1999
Why Barbara or Doug chose New Marlborough
We fell in love with this property for so many reasons. Glorious gardens, great energy, and the trees just spoke to us. Rare to fine a flat property dotted with Blue Spruce trees beautiful enough for Rockefeller Center! Our home has extra wide plank wooden floors with hand stenciling... so many wonderful touches-- like hand hammered wrought iron hardware, heart cutouts on the closet door in the girls' bedroom. Such history! A former stage coach stop midway between Albany and Hartford-- The Red Bird has always been a welcoming 'place to rest', and now, you can enjoy all the elegant comfort it has to offer.
It even has a baseball field for family fun and a stream that runs most of the year!
What makes this house unique
Rare opportunity to stay in a beautifully maintained home that was built in another era. Classic New England, built in 1791, with central air conditioning. A huge plus.
