Ono house is perched above onomea bay on the beautiful hamakua coast scenic drive, six miles north of hilo. New to the rental market, ono house is a secluded hideaway with ocean, garden and rainforest views. Flowering royal poinciana trees, monkey pod trees, palms, coffee and tropical flowers festoon two acres, while another acre is anopen lawn for games or sunbathing with a mai tai. The secluded location and surrounding acreage grant a high degree of privacy and the electric-gated entry assures security. A caretaking couple lives in a cottage on the property and can be helpful or invisible, as you wish. The most repeated description by visitors is 'serene'.
Within walking distance is the old donkey trail to ocean’s edge at wildly scenic onomea bay. The famed hawaii tropical botanical garden is a short walk, and two cafes and an organic tea farm are less than 2 miles away. Akaka falls, rainbow falls, umauma botanical gardens, ziplines and historic downtown hilo with its fish and farmer’s markets are all within a 20-minute drive. Kohala coast beaches are 60 miles away. Hawaii volcanoes national park is an hour to the south and waipio valley an hour to the north. Current lava eruptions are easily visible flowing into the ocean, a status which can change.
The three-level house has 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths and additional rooms for extra sleeping space. The top level master suite views ocean and rain forest. A large bath and an office, suitable for a child’s room, connect to the master bedroom. The easy-access main floor has a kitchen, dining area, living room, laundry, half bath and a charming garden room. The garden room has a balinese punee bed and can be used as another bedroom, or for relaxing. The lower level opens onto the lower terrace. This level has a full bath, two bedrooms and a large family room with a queen-size sleeper sofa. One bedroom has a queen-sized bed; the second bedroom has a full bed and a twin bed. The house is well-stocked with kitchen equipment, washer and dryer, internet, flat screen tvs, dvds, grill and books, including local guidebooks. An ocean-view hot tub is scheduled for may, 2013, if it doesn’t get delayed by “island time.” island time is contagious; you may find yourselves relaxing at the estate instead of sightseeing.
Ono house, “ono” means “good” in Hawaiian, can comfortably sleep 8+. For more than 8 people remember there are only two full baths, which may be a problem if you bring teens. “pack & play” cribs with bedding are available.

Hi, I'm Jan, the owner! Come and stay, linger, and enjoy my home away from home! My Reservation Manager, Donna, will take it from here! Aloha!
Donna Duryea / Reservations Manager purchased this house in 2012
Just so gorgeous!..... a little piece of paradise.
I bought this house sight unseen! Situated on nearly 2 acres of gorgeously landscaped property, the house is the perfect home for my own gettaways to Hawaii. We added a lower patio and by late May we'll add a hot tub to the amenities. It is very peaceful here. The birds nest in the monkeypod trees, flowers fill the garden beds, rare palms and bamboo dot the landscape. Inside, we gave the entertainment room a new 'spark' with colorful walls and lots of seating for get togethers. The house is perfect for families, reunions or small business retreats.
Thank you for a beautiful location and wonderful stay at your Ono House. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about this rental and will definitely keep in mind for future trips to Hawaii. The house is beautiful and the location is picturesque. Thank you again for everything! Cole and Tricia Laustalot
Our extended family gathering at this house was wonderful, with plenty of room for nine of us to spread out in comfort. This is a beautiful house with extensive grounds on a lane that our friends refer to as "Inspiration Drive." The house is very well stocked with dishes, utensils, appliances, and linens. The location near Hilo provides easy access to town and is a wonderful jumping off point to tourist sites on the east side of the Big Island.
We had such a great time at this house. The house itself is upgraded, spacious, and clean. We spent a lot of time hanging out in the covered/screened patio where it felt like we were sitting out in a tropical jungle. The setting for the hot tub was one of the best we've ever experienced. The location of this house is also great as there are some really beautiful walks directly from the house including the Donkey Trail down to Onomea Bay past giant mango trees, banana plants, lilkoi and coconut. We liked that it was close enough to Hilo (about 10 minutes drive), but also close to other sites like Akaka Falls, Botanical Gardens, and Umaumau Falls. The caretaker Ron was super helpful and friendly and helped us find a few places.
If you like the tropical jungle setting I would highly recommend this house as it feels like you're in the middle of a rainforest.
We had a great time during our stay. The location is beautiful and private. The house was very nice and had everything we needed. The caretakers were friendly and offered helpful suggestions about sites to see. We certainly enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub. This side of the island has spectacular scenery and a more authentic feel. Definitely recommended.
The house is great, spacious, very well furnished and equipped with everything you need (and more). Located about 15 min North of Hilo, it's just few hundreds meters away from the Botanical Garden and the smoothie house on the scenic road. The neighborhood is nice and quiet. Great place to stay!!!
We have stayed at this awesome home 3 times in the last year. From the booking agent to the concierge service this place has been outstanding. For the price of a hotel you get a HOME, complete with all the amenities. Wake to the sunrise creeping over the beautiful ocean view. Relax in the hot tub after a day of sightseeing on the Big Island. Most tourists miss the great opportunities on the east side of the island - the most beautiful place on the island - and this home is right in the thick of it on the scenic byway. A short walk to the Botanical Gardens, a short drive to snorkeling with the sea turtles, and a booking agent who will take the time to introduce you and your family to the best spots (the ones the tour groups don't know about!) I give the "Ono House" five stars - and will return.
