About Ed Grosswiler

Retired after a 30-year career running a public affairs consulting firm and, prior to that, a corporate government affairs director. This followed 20 years as a AP reporter, Congressional aide and director of an environmental organization.

Sammye, a native Oregonian, has been a banker and is now a Realtor, covering the metropolitan area. We each have two grown children - hers are boys and mine are girls.

With the benefit of more time, I exercise and bicycle for health and pleasure, allowing my waist line to frequently partake of many of Portland's fine dining restaurants. Traveling extensively is more pleasurable than the days of client-driven trips at the drop of a corporate notion. The challenge is getting Sammye away from her clients, but we are working on that.

With the exception of eight years in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, I've spent the past 53 years living in Portland and enjoying the great Pacific Northwest.

Ed Grosswiler purchased this apartment in 1987

Why Ed Grosswiler chose Portland

I lived in the main floor unit of this 4-plex for 23 years, having purchased the building for its location - central to two of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods and within walking distance of all of downtown with the rest of the city easily accessible by bicycle. The airport is a quick 20 minutes by car, slightly longer by light rail.

The neighbors in the house are eclectic, friendly and respectful of privacy. The top floor neighbor has lived here longer than I did.

What makes this apartment unique

Surrounded by local boutique shops and the full range of dining - fine food, ethnic, food carts. Caffe Mingo is the city's best Italian restaurant. Paley's Place, a top destination restaurant, is just 4 blocks away. Both are on NW 21st. Fireside is a lively dining spot using local products on a menu of unusual variations on familiar dishes. And your taste buds will welcome the unusual seafood combinations at Bamboo Sushi and ice cream at Salt and Straw. And in a class by itself is PBJ food cart with amazing variations of nut butters as the base for the sandwiches. All on NW 23rd.

For shopping, the City Market for seafood, meat, cheese, produce and wine is just a block away, while Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Safeway and Fred Meyer offer the essential supermarket items.

Terrific location!

  • 4 of 5
We were very pleased with the location and the helpfulness of the owner. Lots of good shopping and dining nearby, with public transit easily accessible for moving around downtown. Parking in the area is extremely difficult, so having a reserved parking space was a big plus. We took day trips to Seattle, Mt Hood, Mt St Helens and Cannon Beach. The Evergreen Air & Space Museum in McMinnville was a little expensive, but the aircraft displays (Spruce Goose and SR-71 Blackbird) made it worthwhile. My only caveat is that the A/C units are floor models in each room. The noise didn't affect my sleep, but if might bother some people. We used WiFi more than cable TV, but it was nice to have both.

Beautiful home & charming neighborhood

Beautiful home & charming neighborhood

This 100 year old house is updated with all the modern conveniences yet maintains the old Portland beauty. The owner has provided everything any traveler could need! We even had coffee and half & half waiting for us so we could avoid the late night trip to the store. It is in a charming location - the best restaurant we ate in during our stay was on the next block.
Public transportation is nearby and the owner has provided maps of the area and beyond. I definitely recommend this vacation rental!

2 BR APARTMENT IN NOB HILL

  • 5 of 5
I enjoyed my stay at this apartment very much. The apartment was just as described in the listing. It was very clean and everything worked. No surprises! The owner was very helpful. My friend and I explored Portland. We started out on the Hop On Hop Off Bus to get an idea of what we wanted to see. Washington Park is lovely with the Rose Garden and I highly recommend the Japanese Garden. Portland Art Museum was great! The apartment has a great location to walk to stores on 23rd Ave. and restaurants on 21st Ave. I would stay here again.

Awesome!!!

  • 5 of 5
We could not have had a nicer apartment then this one in this wonderful part of Portland. The apartment met our expectations and more. There was 4 adults staying is this 2 (large) bedroom apartment with all the amenities you could need. Ed was a wonderful host who provided us with milk, cereal, tea and coffee. A nice touch! All the linens were immaculate and each of us had our own towel rack. With all of us showering, we never ran out of hot water. The apartment was so close to many places to eat, just on the very next block and many more shops up two more blocks. That being said we did enjoy the BBQ on the patio and had lovely meals in. Although everything was in walking distance we never thought it was too noisy. We arrived during some very warm weather but air conditioners in both bedrooms and the living room made the apartment very comfortable.
We will definitely come back. Thanks Ed!

A highlight of our American trip.

  • 5 of 5
Immediately on eying this house on VRBO we wanted to stay there. On arriving our expectations were more than met. This house is superb!

The house is listed as 2 bedrooms but this limited categorisation is misleading - this house is huge! We used the home office for our baby's crib, like a 3rd bedroom. The bedrooms are massive and the beds were very comfortable (and had white linen - always appreciated). The eat-in kitchen is modern and equipped with everything we needed for cooking and eating family meals - we didn't need to use the formal dining area at all. The kids could run amuck in the spacious but cozy family room. It was all excellent. We did Portland mostly by car (and it was very easy to do so) but the house is near a lively part of town and a car is not essential

But by far the most memorable aspects of our stay here were due to the owner's personal touches. We had a great time looking through his most fascinating book collection. While we didn't have time to read anything (but the dust jackets) we noted so many interesting titles and now have a vast list of interesting reads to look forward to. Another special experience was pulling out some of his vinyl LPs and listening to old favourites with hiss and crackle for the first time in 20 years. Listening to Janis Joplin on old vinyl crystallised a particular "American moment" for me. Thank you.

To boot: We looked forward to Portland as a vegan food Mecca. How beautifully surprising to learn that the host's representative, Ashley, that met us there also lived vegan and gave us a personal rundown on Portland's excellent vegan food offerings. Thanks you too.

This is a great house befitting a great city. Portland - we loved you.

Great stay!

Wow! What a great place! The location was perfect! Had a fabulous time exploring the local neighborhood that was only a short walk. And downtown only about a 15 minute walk. The owner was very accommodating and had lots of recommendations for restaurants and things to do in the city!
