Overview

San Benito House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Located 50 minutes from Merida, this architect-designed waterfront house is unique. In the large central room high ceilings create an open feeling, while ample windows and glass doors maximize the breeze and light. Each room has a view of the endlessly changing gulf waters. An attention to detail sets it apart from the square boxes that are too common on the beach.

The air-conditioned bedroom is loft-like, set behind and above the living room. Its windows are shaded by vertical poles of peeled zapote branches which support wild orchids indigenous to the area. From the hanging bed you have an unimpeded view of the water. This romantic setting is ideal for a couple; however, the house can comfortably accommodate a family of 4. There are two built-in benches each longer than a standard bed; their comfortable mattress and abundant cushions are of hand woven textiles. Hand made hammocks offer additional sleeping space.

Just outside the sliding glass doors, water cascades down a series of domino-shaped lozenges and into a canal that traverses the property; an ideal place to sit and wash away the sand and salt from the beach. If you don't want to swim in the gulf, and ample plunge pool is a pleasant alternative. At night, reflected light from the canal plays across the walls.

About Barbara

I am a photograph and photojournalist. Casa San Benito, with the ever changing sea, scudding clouds and fragrant breeze, is - when not rented out - my refuge and source of inspiration for work. Travel is in my genes and I have been traveling - mostly backpack fashion - since I was old enough to get on a plane alone. I love animals and I welcome small well-trained pets.

Barbara purchased this house in 2010

Why Barbara chose San Benito

This location is idyllic. Right on the beach, but also has a shady garden in the back yard. Most of the year tranquil. July and August as well as Christmas and Holy week it is full of Meridanos and great for those who like a festive atmosphere.

What makes this house unique

The architecture is unique, providing both privacy and view of the water. A constant breeze makes the hot days comfortable. There are parks for ornithologists as well as archaeological sites. Lots of charming small villages dot the coastline.

There is little to add to the excellent reviews already posted. My husband and I enjoyed a romantic week at Casa San Benito this February. The accommodations were modern and comfortable with everything that you could possibly need. Our host Barbara went out of her way to ensure we had a great experience, including extending a room to us in her lovely home after a very long day of travel. The beach was right at our back door. We swam in the ocean, walked on the beach and explored the surrounding areas, including Merida, which was only about a 30 minute drive from San Benito. As other reviewers have acknowledged a car rental is a must. However, driving is easy, the roads are well signed and maintained. Barbara thank you for your kindness and generosity. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Privacy in Paradise

  • 4 of 5
A lovely way to spend a vacation! Barbara's home is small but comfortable. The design allows for cross breezes to cool you in the evenings and we never once felt the need to use the air conditioner. The bed is suspended from the ceiling and the gentle sway as you drift off to sleep is an awesome feeling. You can hear the ocean crashing at the shore but the gardens protect your privacy from anyone walking along the beach, so you really do feel the serenity of beach living. There are beach mats provided ( they are the nicest ones I have ever seen) but there are no outside loungers or patio chairs available. As always when travelling, things are not as they are at home, so don't expect to have every single luxury at your fingertips, but instead, appreciate the beauty and the simplicity that Casa San Benito offers. The walks on the beach and the ocean were great. The drive to Progreso is easy and there are many things to see in the area, including some ruins, flamingos and quiet little towns along the highway. Wilma ( the lady next door) is there to help as much as possible and while her English is limited, her willingness to help out as needed was appreciated so much! We really enjoyed our stay and if we could have extended it by a few more days, we definitely would have. Thank you, Barbara for a most memorable experience.

Owner's Response: thank you so much for a kind review. Just a comment about lounge chairs. What we do have are hammocks though they may take time to adjust to. And a built in long shelf with comfy mattresses and cushions . As well there are folding chairs with sling backs.

You two were wonderful guests. And the oils you produce are amazing.

thanks you

Mis mejores Vacaciones

  • 5 of 5

we felt immediately at home in this cozy beach house

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed here for a week and spent most of our time sitting or walking for miles on the beach (located conveniently in the backyard), and reading while laying in the hammocks on the back patio with a soundtrack of crashing waves. Barbara (the very nice and easy to reach owner) met us on our first morning to explain everything about the house, and Wilma (the next door neighbor) helped us with any questions that came up and did our laundry for us. The house is small with a compact kitchen, but it was perfect for the two of us, and we had no trouble whipping up lots of delicious meals with a beautiful array of local produce. The nearby town, Progresso, has restaurants with a great view of the beach and lots of shopping options from open air markets to mega-stores (i.e. Walmart). Yucatan state has a lot of history and nature; we saw the Mayan ruins at Uxmal, the oldest church in the Americas and lots of spanish architecture in Merida, and the amazing Lol Tun Caves. Casa San Benito helped us have a wonderful and relaxing beach vacation!

Owner's Response: I am so glad you were happy at San Benito where solitude á deux can be magical. And what is fun - as you also figured out - is that in minutes you can be amidst the throngs of Progreso, or the many archaeological sites or natures preserves that are within easy reach.

Thank you for staying in San Benito and I hope the visit sent you back to NYC restored in mind and body. It was a pleasure to meet you Melanie and Anju

El mejor cumpleaños

  • 5 of 5

The house itself was nice in the pictures but once we arrived it showed a lack of upkeep and was quite dirty. Splash pool was dirty and surrounding floor was dangerously slick when wet. Blocks/boxes covered in tile served as the way to gain access to the bedroom loft, completely unsafe and unstable. Wilma the next door neighbor and "caretaker" spoke no english so it was impossible to communicate. We did have a nice time in spite of the shortcomings of the house, the ocean was warm and we met some nice people in the area.

Owner's Response: Well, I am so sorry that Mike felt this way. I personally inspected the house before his arrival and it was up to the usual high standards most guests talk about; in fact I had put in more than the usual effort. I later learned that a storm (a "norte" blew in just before he arrived and Wilma was doing her very best to clear away the debris from a half dozen houses she manages and got there as soon as possible
Some people have trouble adjusting to non-American standards,. Mexico is Mexico and the beach is the beach and those factors imply harsh conditions at times and different standards. A year old faucet seems to have aged 5 years, for example, because of the salt air. Unexpected storms arise in minutes blowing in sand and leaves tho they are quickly swept away.
Part of the joy of being in a foreign land is the effort to share a language or communicate by sheer force of will which Wilma does splendidly. I was available on my cell in case of problems, as indeed, Mike knew since I talked to him various times and the free phone I provide has me in its program.
