Located 50 minutes from Merida, this architect-designed waterfront house is unique. In the large central room high ceilings create an open feeling, while ample windows and glass doors maximize the breeze and light. Each room has a view of the endlessly changing gulf waters. An attention to detail sets it apart from the square boxes that are too common on the beach.
The air-conditioned bedroom is loft-like, set behind and above the living room. Its windows are shaded by vertical poles of peeled zapote branches which support wild orchids indigenous to the area. From the hanging bed you have an unimpeded view of the water. This romantic setting is ideal for a couple; however, the house can comfortably accommodate a family of 4. There are two built-in benches each longer than a standard bed; their comfortable mattress and abundant cushions are of hand woven textiles. Hand made hammocks offer additional sleeping space.
Just outside the sliding glass doors, water cascades down a series of domino-shaped lozenges and into a canal that traverses the property; an ideal place to sit and wash away the sand and salt from the beach. If you don't want to swim in the gulf, and ample plunge pool is a pleasant alternative. At night, reflected light from the canal plays across the walls.

I am a photograph and photojournalist. Casa San Benito, with the ever changing sea, scudding clouds and fragrant breeze, is - when not rented out - my refuge and source of inspiration for work. Travel is in my genes and I have been traveling - mostly backpack fashion - since I was old enough to get on a plane alone. I love animals and I welcome small well-trained pets.
Barbara purchased this house in 2010
This location is idyllic. Right on the beach, but also has a shady garden in the back yard. Most of the year tranquil. July and August as well as Christmas and Holy week it is full of Meridanos and great for those who like a festive atmosphere.
The architecture is unique, providing both privacy and view of the water. A constant breeze makes the hot days comfortable. There are parks for ornithologists as well as archaeological sites. Lots of charming small villages dot the coastline.
I hope all is well with you. I just wanted to let you know I received the refunded amount. Thank you so much for your understanding, and I'll be sure to let you know about future bookings at your location. Thank you so much Barbara! You are such an incredible person! :)

There is little to add to the excellent reviews already posted. My husband and I enjoyed a romantic week at Casa San Benito this February. The accommodations were modern and comfortable with everything that you could possibly need. Our host Barbara went out of her way to ensure we had a great experience, including extending a room to us in her lovely home after a very long day of travel. The beach was right at our back door. We swam in the ocean, walked on the beach and explored the surrounding areas, including Merida, which was only about a 30 minute drive from San Benito. As other reviewers have acknowledged a car rental is a must. However, driving is easy, the roads are well signed and maintained. Barbara thank you for your kindness and generosity. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
If you are wanting relaxation, calm, and losing yourself on a quiet beach, this is the place to go. San Benito is off the grid, no clubs, mega resorts, or overcrowded clubs.I walked two hours in the morning and saw 5 people, it was wonderful. The house is designed to feel open and the ambience is what you want at the beach .The house is perfect for reading, laying in a hammock, and just listening to sounds of the beach. I really loved the floating bed it was the perfect place for an afternoon siesta. Barbara was very helpful in arranging for people to clean, cook, and they are close by. This is a comfortable house for a small group, and it provides the basic things for a restful vacation. Progresso is close by if you want to venture into town for dinner, or shopping.Local find: Margarita's 11km from the house, good food and wonderful beach restaurant. Ask Wilma, the next door neighbor when they come by for fresh fish to buy, right outside your door! I have been traveling to Mexico for over 35 years and this place is one of my favorites, Thanks again Barbara for sharing your home, espero contar con su presencia un dia, hasta entonces bien,, Esteban
We stayed at San Benito for 9 days and enjoyed every minute. The house was perfect and clean. The weather was perfect. Wilma was a sweetie (and helped us with laundry). I think the gardens at Barbara's are the most wonderful as they offer privacy and yet you still have wonderful views. Walking the beach for miles in both directions we didn't see a house with as nice a pool area.
Progresso has many wonderful places (including a library with free internet) as we had some trouble with wifi connections in restaurants. Our rental car broke down several miles from San Benito and we were very comfortable hitchhiking. We loved our stay, it was relaxing with no distractions! Thank You Barbara
What an adventure... We did all our travel in one day (one very long day). We came from Seattle, WA (at the airport at 6AM and arrived at the Casa at 1AM Mexico time). Barbara was very helpful with information on renting a car, and gave us directions to the Casa. (note: the Walmart is after you turn to head to Progresso) Wilma greeted us at 1AM and did her best to communicate with us. Barbara showed up the next day and gave us the rundown in English. Boy do we wish we would have known more Spanish. It was a quite retreat and very relaxing. I will say that in March the mornings on the beach are beautiful, at about 1 o'clock every day the wind picks up and the pool is delightful. We also enjoyed fishing with Wilma's Brother. He did not speak any English, Thank goodness he is a good fisherman. We had lots of laughs. If we where to do this trip over we would have put 2 days in Cancun on the front stayed 5 days at the Casa and 2 days back in Cancun.
A lovely way to spend a vacation! Barbara's home is small but comfortable. The design allows for cross breezes to cool you in the evenings and we never once felt the need to use the air conditioner. The bed is suspended from the ceiling and the gentle sway as you drift off to sleep is an awesome feeling. You can hear the ocean crashing at the shore but the gardens protect your privacy from anyone walking along the beach, so you really do feel the serenity of beach living. There are beach mats provided ( they are the nicest ones I have ever seen) but there are no outside loungers or patio chairs available. As always when travelling, things are not as they are at home, so don't expect to have every single luxury at your fingertips, but instead, appreciate the beauty and the simplicity that Casa San Benito offers. The walks on the beach and the ocean were great. The drive to Progreso is easy and there are many things to see in the area, including some ruins, flamingos and quiet little towns along the highway. Wilma ( the lady next door) is there to help as much as possible and while her English is limited, her willingness to help out as needed was appreciated so much! We really enjoyed our stay and if we could have extended it by a few more days, we definitely would have. Thank you, Barbara for a most memorable experience.
Casa San Benito is 20 minutes from the port city of Progreso where restaurants and bars are plentiful. There are also supermarkets and open air markets for basic supplies as well as tourist souvenirs.
Many charming small towns are nearby where you will find restaurants, internet cafes, open markets and small shops. Day trips to Merida are easy to do (40 minutes) as well as outings to several bird sanctuaries (Celestun, Rio Lagartos), cenotes, Maya ruins, a restored henquen (sisal) hacienda (San Eduardo). Most guide books include details of these points of interest. You will a Lonely Planet guide in the house.
