The population size of the larger area including Monteverde, San Luis, Cerro Plano, Santa Elena, Canitas and Los Llanos is about 10,000. About 250 live in Monteverde itself. Many are bilingual - English and Spanish speaking. The community is very diverse culturally including Hispanic Costa Ricans, who are mostly Roman Catholic, biologists originating from several countries, Quakers from the United States and others.
Mills is a biologist and photographer who lives on the property.
Mills Tandy purchased this cabin in 1983

Beauty of the forest. Accesibility to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Opportunities for observation and photography of the forest.
We had a great stay in your Canopy House - what a fantastic location. Our stay has been short so we haven't been able to take too much advantage of your knowledge and expertise, but feel if we'd needed you, you would have been more than helpful. Certainly very welcoming to us.
We have spent our short time here very productively, so are worn out from all our hiking! But having seen so many stunning creatures and scenery, we are more than happy. Bizarrely though we haven't seen a lot of cloud!! Must have been very lucky!
Thanks for having us!
This remote ,beautiful , simple , green , escape , was perfect for someone or two, that want to truly experience the jungle.
As an animal enthusiest , I hiked everywhere , even at night , by myself , thru the cloud forest thru paths not only on this owner's property , but also at the Monteverde Reserve , which this property abuts !
Absolutly spectacular views all around the proerty, lots of animals to see every morning, including monkeys , quetzal birds , toucans , hummers everywhere !
This house is green , very simplictic , clean , full bathroom , and good lighting in and out .
Perfect for explorers, bird watchers , true adventure seekers , all others should just rent a motel in the big town !
I'm sorry Mills, I know you are fond of your little cabin, but we were not at all pleased. Very rustic, nothing beautiful about it and people need to know what they are getting into. The exterior walls are made of corrugated plastic and there are no inside walls. Spider webs, stained curtains and dust are not what I would call clean. It is one tiny room with bath, no kitchen sink, no coffee pot and very sparse and old kitchen ware. There are 2 leaks in the bathroom, one "fixed" with a can under it and the other with paper towels. The septic smell is backing up in the floor drains. At best this is like a $25 trapper cabin in the outback. When the sun goes down you may as well go to bed as there is nothing to do. No reading lights, no radio, not even a deck of cards and you sure don't want to try to drive that horrid road into town. Do not pay for this place unless you can see inside first.
On the upside it is in a pretty and private area and Mills is really a nice guy.
Well this is really NOT the glorified chicken coop which one reviewer claims - but it is a very rustic cabin, rather than a home or hotel. It has complete isolation from the Touristas, as well as from outside conveniences and annoyances. It is REALLY tiny, 10'x18' rectangle, and has little open floor space: the bathroom sink is the only sink, the propane stove is 2 burners set on the only counter top along with a nearly functional microwave oven. The refrigerator works, as does the ceiling fan, space heater, internet and telephone. The demand propane hot water heater for shower works if you play it right, not unusual in this country. The owner was quick to respond when the toilet flush backed up through the floor drains, although he did not succeed in fixing the problem. The double bed is a comfortable fouton, and the rain forest army ants only occasionally swarm on the walls. Claimed "full cooking facilities" are actually very minimal. Maintenance appears too minimal to please most people
Remember that this is located in a cloud forest, you will only see the sun occasionally and it is very, very wet The Home-Away map location shown is about 5 miles off the truth, but most of the descriptive info provided appears to be true.
If you want isolation and dont mind rustic, this is a fine choice. If not, then better to try El Bosque' just down the road as short way for more boring karma but also a lower cost. Would recommend this to some but not to most friends. Rates for the benefits offered are not especially competitive with the area.
This little house is the best way to experience the lush rain forests of Monteverde. Waking up to the sounds of the birds and wind swept trees in nothing short of a spiritual experience. The house is large enough for two people and it has all of the necessities that one would require. Hot water, a cook top, large refrigerator, shower, dinner table and a comfortable bed, washer /dryer facility. It is located 5 minutes from the city which has great restaurants and attractions. The house is located on a large plot of land that has several private hiking trails.
We stayed for about 5 days and loved every minute of it. The owner was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area giving us great suggestions on what to do and see. We felt very safe and welcomed during our stay. The house is located very close to the Cloud Rain forest where you can seek out the illusive Quetzal. If you are a traveler that enjoys experiencing a place as naturally as possible this is the place to be. Being that you will be located in the heart of the rainforest be prepared for the humidity. Your cloths will never feel fully dry. This is the nature of the environment and we were able to get use to it quite quickly. I highly recommend the Canopy House for all nature lovers and adventure seekers. We hope to someday return.
Great cabin nestled in the Monteverde cloud forest. Easy walking distance to the Monteverde Preserve and the Santa Elena's Children's Eternal Rainforest. The cabin is on a large piece of property with several extensive walking paths.
Watch the clouds roll in each evening through the cabin's large windows. Listen to the gentle pitter patter of the rain as it hits the roof. Experience the incredible sounds and sights of nature. I highly recommend the Monteverde Canopy House for an intimate escape to nature.
This is a glorified chicken coop. The pictures and description do not portray honestly what this is. You will have to hike your luggage up a slippery steep hill. The "kitchen" is simply a gas stove, microwave and small refrigerator 18 inches from the end of the bed. There were also cleanliness issues and open gaps to the outside allowing entrance to ample numbers of bugs.
A fair price for this accommodation would be $25 per night.
Monteverde is in the Tilaran Mountains of NW Costa Rica on the Pacific side of the continental divide at 1400-1600m (4000-6000ft) elevation. The area has become a prime international ecotourism destination, mainly because of the protection of large areas of cloud forest by private interests. There is now a large infrastructure of tourism related businesses in the region offering everything from hotels and restaurants to guided nature experiences and adventure sports. See “Exploring Costa Rica – 2010-2011” published by the Tico Times https://www.ticotimes.net/ .
