Grand Canyon House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedroom, 2.5 bathroom Mountain Getaway with spectacular views

The Mountain Star is located in the heart of the Coconino National Forest along the San Francisco Peaks scenic corridor between the mountain town of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. This spectacular and convenient location sets The Mountain Star apart from Williams and other rural locations. It can be rented for as little as 2 days, but is ideal for longer stays.

The Mountain Star is less than one hour’s drive from the Grand Canyon’s main entrance, and if you don’t want to drive yourself, a local tour company van will pick you up directly from this property. So enjoy the Grand Canyon and then leave the heat and crowds behind to enjoy your very own mountain retreat!

The Mountain Star, located at an elevation of 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) on 5 beautiful acres and backed by National Forest land, offers breath-taking natural beauty, expansive views, direct and easy access to nature, boundless outdoor activities (nature walks and hikes, biking, climbing, etc.) and a spectacular night sky. It is a sanctuary for inspiration, relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation, as well as being perfectly situated for outdoor fun and adventure. Its spacious, 2nd-story wrap-around deck with picnic table, chairs and chiminea (outdoor fireplace) provides for unparalleled enjoyment of the mountain air and scenery.

Experience seeing the sun breach the horizon every morning and evening, moon rises and moon-sets too. When is the last time you let a mountain breeze, the expansive play of earth light and shadow, nature’s panorama and the rich senses of the moment guide your day of thoughts and activity? The Mountain Star offers this to you and your loved ones on a daily basis.

The Mountain Star is completely wind and sun powered (with an automatic propane generator backup system). During the warmer months, the home is 'air conditioned' with refreshing mountain air using the operable windows that are in every room of the house, ceiling fans throughout and the operable window blinds throughout...and nights are always refreshingly cool in the warmest of summertime. During the colder months, the Mountain Star stays warm with 3 radiant heaters, a gas 'fire place' and a very efficient, living room pellet stove.

All outdoor photographs on this site were taken directly from the living room or leisure deck of The Mountain Star.

In addition to all the usual, full home amenities, this resort home offers:

• Spacious, 2nd-story wrap-around deck with picnic table, chairs and chiminea (outdoor fireplace) as well as a fire pan (an alternate form of an outdoor fireplace). Cut and split wood provided.

About Rob Dutton

Hi, my name is 'Flagstaff' Rob Dutton. I am a photographer and musician formerly masquerading as a computer system's analyst. I enjoy meeting people from around the world and have always been an internationalist by nature and upbringing. I am enthusiastic about life and wholeheartedly believe that nature and natural beauty nurture the soul and aid creative and spiritual growth. My enthusiasm for life is directly fueled by my vision and creation of “The Mountain Star”. I designed her and completed construction in 2009. I enlisted a true craftsman to help me build. 'Inspired living' was my guiding principle for the location and design. She was built with lots of love and perseverance, and it excites me to share with others what “The Mountain Star” has to offer.

Why Rob Dutton chose Grand Canyon

The Mountain Star sits in a rare and amazing location. It has the beauty and openness of a remote mountain location yet is only 20 miles from the key regional center and resort town of Flagstaff. It is easily accessed via a well-maintained and beautiful, undivided 2-lane highway (AZ 180) that exists almost exclusively to provide thoroughfare to the Grand Canyon. The Mountain Star’s five acres are part of an area known as Kendrick Park, a 180-acre private land “island” in the middle of the Coconino National Forest (the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in North America). The home itself is directly backed by the national forest.

What makes this house unique

I believe this home offers the most beautiful and panoramic views available in Northern Arizona. The home’s extensive windowing was designed specifically for the views. The home directly faces the beautiful San Francisco Peaks to the south, Kendrick Mountain to the west, Saddle Mountain to the east and forested hills to the north. Though easily accessed, it is completely ”off-the-grid” and is powered by the sun and the wind. At 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) of elevation, the night sky is glorious.

Peaceful and beautiful

  • 5 of 5
This is a wonderful place to stay. You can get an idea from the photos but the peaceful atmosphere and the scent of the mountain air can't be captured on a camera. The view of the sky and the mountains from the windows was glorious. Perhaps my favourite experience was sitting on the deck with a fire, watching the moon rise over the ponderosas. Driving to the Grand Canyon and flagstaff was easy. Rob was an attentive, friendly and helpful host. He gave us great tips for local walks and a way of seeing the Grand Canyon which avoided the crowds. We really loved our stay.

An amazing and unforgettable week!

  • 5 of 5
We arrived at the Mountain Star to find a warm, welcoming home for the week, complete with champagne, incomparable views, stunning sunsets, and all the trappings that would make our stay both comfortable and unforgettable. Close to the Grand Canyon, terrific hiking trails, Red Mountain, and so many other amazing natural attractions, the Mountain Star was a perfect getaway. When we weren't enjoying the outdoors, we were settled in with book by the fire. We can't wait to come back!

Magical weekend at The Mountain Star

  • 5 of 5
I'll start off by saying Rob, the renter, was absolutely the best "check in" experience I ever had at a vacation rental. From the moment you book the house, Rob provides you with a detailed email of helpful things to know (about the area, driving directions, different hikes, what to wear and bring, etc.) Goes to show how much thought and care he puts into ones stay!

The house itself is filled with charm and feels like home the moment you step in. Days were spent at the Grand Canyon (1 hour away) and Antelope Canyon/Horseshoe Bend (2.5 hours away) but nights were when the house came to life. We cooked healthy and delicious meals every night using all of the gorgeous kitchen counter. (I am from NYC so we made sure to use the large kitchen we never would have access to back home!) We made a small camp fire on the deck and made smores outside while looking out at the endless black shimmering night. The master room bathtub provided a quiet sanctuary while washing the day's worth of sun, sweat and dirt away overlooking the peaks. Many wine glasses were had, of course.

You are guaranteed a wonderful experience in the nature and I would not experience Grand Canyon any other way than staying at The Mountain Star.

Amazing rental near Grand Canyon

  • 5 of 5
Mountain Star has so much to offer for those seeking to experience not only the Grand Canyon, but the diversity of Arizona itself. While only a short driving distance from Flagstaff and Sedona, Mountain Star is located beyond the commotion of city life. Surrounded by outstanding mountain views, and the opportunity to see a magnificent night sky, Mountain Star truly was the heart of our trip. We enjoyed: cooking meals in the kitchen while taking in that incredible view of Humphrey's Peak, roasting marshmallows outside under the stars by a warm fire, playing card games on a rainy day, and watching movies. When we ventured out, our destinations were all within driving distance, and always provided for great scenic drives. The owner, Rob, provides extensive recommendations for activities to fill your days. He has placed much effort and love into this rental, so that we did in fact feel at home during our stay. I highly recommend this rental and I am grateful to have experienced it myself!

A beautiful property in an idyllic setting.

The home and amenities were unique and beautiful. Rob is an amazing host. He has created a tranquil space that is perfect after a log day of hiking or instead of a long day of hiking. Book a week. Nothing else compares after a couple of days here.

You won't want to leave

You won't want to leave

Pleasantly nestled in the Coconino National Forest, this “off the grid” cabin has a fabulous view of the San Francisco Peaks. All the amenities you can expect are here, and more. We loved the personalized welcoming board, and Champagne. The cabin is filled with Rob’s beautiful photography, and personalized touch. There is a fire pit ready for that late evening family gathering; where you can watch the elk appear at dusk. Just out the back gate; you can wander into the national forest.
We picked this location because of the convenient placement between Flagstaff, and the Grand Canyon. Rob gave us advice on some great trails, and an off the beaten path location within the Grand Canyon.
We didn’t want to leave, and plan on coming back for a longer stay. If you want to have that home away from home feel, away from a tourist camps, this is the place.
