Morningside Cottage is located on the South-side of Little Platte Lake in the northern portion of Benzie County, Michigan about 3.5 miles from Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. The cottage is on a 1.5 acre, heavily wooded parcel with 200 ft. of frontage on Little Platte Lake. The mixed variety of trees including maple, beech, oak, hemlock and white pine provide a canopy fifty to sixty feet high and make the property very secluded and private. Morningside Cottage is 275 ft. from Deadstream Rd and accessed by our own two-track. The cottage overlooks the lake and surrounding forested hills. Morningside Cottage is 1200 sq. ft. in size and the first-floor consists of a fully-furnished kitchen, Berber carpeting throughout the rest of the cottage including the paneled dining room, living room (stone fireplace-hard wood included), small library/reading room, both the master bedroom(over-looking the lake) and 2nd bedroom with queen-sized beds, full bath and a half, and a washer/dryer. The downstairs consists of a large Berber carpeted recreational room with TV, wood stove, tables, and couches. You’ll find Morningside Cottage to be a very relaxing family oriented cottage that is very private, quiet, and secluded. All the utensils you should need during your stay are found in our well-stocked kitchen. We provide bed linens but you must bring your own towels. We are pet and smoke free. As you shut down for the evening, lying in bed, you may be entertained by our resident loons on the lake as their tremolo echoes across the lake, a symbol of the up-north mystique. During daylight you may see one or more of our resident Eagles soaring above the lake and also the numerous resident swans and if you’re really lucky you may have a group fly low over the cottage – awe-inspiring- and when you hear their wing-beats you realize just how big of an animal they really are. A person may say they are going to take a “stay-at-home-vacation” but what I have found is that all the troubles and cares as well as “things-to-do” don’t’ go away but when you leave home you do have that opportunity to relax and refresh.
A 400 sq. deck is attached to the front of Morningside Cottage overlooking Little Platte Lake and includes chairs, chaise-lounge, table, and gas grill, a great place to relax with your morning coffee, evening-meal, or mid-day relaxing/reading time. The lake-front includes a dock, boat hoist/13 ft. fishing boat with 4hp motor/oars/canoe/paddles/life-jackets, and a fire-pit stocked with wood for those evening fires/hot dogs and some-mores.
Little Platte Lake, sand and gravel in front of our cottage, is a shallow lake with blue-gills, perch, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and pike. The Little Platte Lake outlet, “Deadstream”, flows into the Platte River then into big Platte Lake and finally via the Platte River to Lake Michigan.

What a great place to be - I've traveled to other areas of our great country and they all are special but I think this area of Northwest Michigan is truly unique in all of our four seasons. I love all the seasons and activities that abound from hunting, fishing, sailing, hiking, down-hill and cross-country skiing, golfing, you name it and you'll find it here especially the opportunity to meet great people and find your own secluded hide-away where you can re-fresh your mind, body, and spirit. I'll help you with any questions you may have about the area. Come join us for your own experience in stress-reducing relaxation.

Nothing is complete when coming to our area for your vacation until you take a trip to 'Sleeping Bear Sand-dunes' at Glen Haven within the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. It looks like a small pile of sand until you start up the dune and that's the time you realize how high it really is - but there is nothing like standing on the top and getting a beautiful over-view of adjacent Glen Lake. Another must-do is the Pierce-Stocking Drive which winds up through the wooded dune-area giving spectacular over-views of Little and Big Glen Lake. If you want the thrill and success of Salmon Fishing I'll put you in contact with my friend Charter Boat Cap'n Bob Smith of Glen Arbor in his boat the 'Mariah'. Cap'n Bob will have you pulling in King Salmon in short order. When he took us out last summer we took seven fish within two hours with the largest being a twenty-four pound King Salmon. Bob will fillet and package those salmon for you and they'll be ready for the grill or he'll arrange for 'Boondocks Restaurant',next door, to grill-up some of your fish for you and your crew right then and there, what a treat to sit down with Cap'n Bob and your 'crew' eating fish as fresh as it can get along with your favorite libations while sharing your favorite 'fishing tale' from your days adventure. South of Morningside Cottage, along M-22, is the Lake Michigan-port city of Frankfort-Elberta nestled around Betsie Lake. This harbor area is home to numerous restaurants, points-of-interest, gift shops, the county-indoor movie theater, and absolutely gorgeous beaches framed by boat channel break-walls which are great for a meandering stroll, fishing, or taking a jump-into-the-lake. If you wanted to have some of your salmon smoked you could take some of your catch to 'Monte's smoke-house' and he would prepare the most delicious smoked-fish you could imagine. Monte's smoke house which also features other fish of the area is located on 'Main Street' on the East end of town. As you round the corner don't forget to stop at the 'A&W Drive-In' as 50's as it gets but with that same great tasting root-beer, burgers, and dogs. Heading East on M-115 your destination is Benzonia where you'll find the Benzie Area Historical Museum located in the re-stored 1800's Congregational Church which served the early Congregational Assembly in the early days of this County in Northern Michigan where they built a college in the 'wilderness'. Traveling further East on M-115 will take you to Crystal Mountain Resort truely a gem for our Benzie County Area providing great family recreation with downhill/cross-country skiing in the winter-time and two great golf-courses in the summer. Retrace your steps to Benzonia and you'll find it's neighbor Beulah on the Beach of Crystal Lake. As with all of our small communities you'll find fun-restaurants, coffee-shops, deli's, and lots of small shops. Phoenix Cafe, East Shore Market, want great pizza's then try the 'Hungry Tummy' double-cheese super deluxe, Papano's Pizza, the 'Cherry-Hut's' famous cherry-pie, the Brookside Inn, then continue North on US-31 to arrive at the 'Cherry Bowl' Drive-In. This is the real-deal and a favorite for a large-area of Northern Michigan. A real-treat along with their 'snack-shop'. Your next stop is Honor with Papa-J's 50's themed restaurant - great food - oh and by the way all of the restaurant's in Benzie County and surrounding area provide great food at a modest price.
