As a general contractor, I have taken great pleasure in restoring this vintage home and updating it. We treat everything we build and restore, with the care that we would take if we were going to live in it ourselves. We both enjoy the numerous outdoor activities available every day in Southern California, and take full advantage of the weather. I am an avid soccer player and my wife enjoys hiking a walking and teaches pilates. We live just a short distance away, in the neighboring community of Silverlake.
Joanne Higgins purchased this apartment in 2002
We have lived in Silverlake and Echo Park for the past 20 years. We love it! This part of LA is rich with history and nestled in the foothills and yet is one of the most convenient locations in the city with easy access to downtown, Hollywood, Griffith Park (with the LA Zoo and Observatory, 3 golf courses, tennis courts and hiking), and a relatively short drive to beach communities of Venice and Santa Monica. It is a fast 1 hr drive to the closest of the local ski areas.
Neighborhood character abounds, with some of the most fantastic eateries and bars anywhere in the city within walking distance. If it's music you crave, several of the cities more cutting edge venues are a short distance. The renowned 'Echoplex' is an easy stroll, and 'Spaceland' is in neighboring Silverlake. An eclectic mix of people and tastes make this one of the most sought out locals of Los Angeles.
I had an aunt, a cousin, two children, my parents all in town for my wedding. They enjoyed the park, the house, and the family vibe. Joanne was a responsive host. I think everyone had a positive experience. One thing I will mention -- there are a lot of steps at the front of the house. . .Not great for anyone who has recently undergone hip surgery. Luckily, everyone in this vacation household was in pretty good shape.
We split the place between six people for a week while on a business trip. Convenient to Downtown via cab, a million times better than a hotel, it was the perfect place for a trip that mixed work, fun, exploration and relaxation. The owners are attentive, fix problems fast (more towels? no problem! locked yourself out? no problem!) but invisible the rest of the time. A perfect experience!
I'm the type of traveler who loves to stay in neighborhoods when I travel as opposed to hotels in business districts. I love to meet people and walk to local markets so this rental was perfect for me -- I've stayed there twice. I'm a writer and being in a neighborhood near a park was particularly pleasing to me for the calming effect of the water and the people watching. When I visited a second time with my significant other, we spent most mornings walking around the lake, which was the perfect way to start the day. First thing you need to know is that the house is huge, I don't know how many square feet, but the three bedrooms and spacious living room were more than we needed, but we appreciated the space. The house is a 1928 Los Angeles Craftsman that's been warmly tended to by the owners. There's steps to climb, so that may deter some guests, but from the top floor you get views of Echo Park, one of the older neighborhoods in Los Angeles, but a neighborhood in the midst of a Renaissance. Its fun to walk and explore the new shops, restaurants, art galleries. There's a real culture to be found in Echo Park and Los Angeles' diversity couldn't be more on display than in this neighborhood. Parking was easy and I always felt safe. This location was extremely convenient to the 101 Hollywood Freeway and Sunset Boulevard and from those thoroughfares you can get anywhere you want in Los Angeles. When I stayed there the owners were still putting some finishing touches on the house, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I guess it sleeps 8-10 people, I wouldn't know. But for me it was really comfortable -- and it felt like I was really visiting Los Angeles. I highly recommend a visit here.
This house is in an awesome location while staying in LA. Easy access to downtown, either by car or mass transit. Echo Park is a great place for a morning walk. We even walked to a Dodgers Game!
The hosts are there if you need them but give you your privacy if you don't! Our extended family stayed for a graduation and we had plenty of room. The kitchen is well equipped, the beds are comfy and there are LOTS of towels! We had a wonderful time and highly recommend staying here. It so much nicer to get up in the morning and sit on the front porch with a cup of coffee than being stuck in a hotel room.
(There are some stairs to climb but the grandparents of the grad school graduate did not have any problems!)
