About Jan or Bettina

We moved to Los Cedros in 1992 onto our 100 hectar farm, working in farming, reforestation and construction. We also have a woodworkshop, a mango plantation, teak, pochote and cashew reforestation. We moved our artist workshop to San Jose lately and treat this as a gentleman farm.

Jan or Bettina purchased this farmhouse in 1992

Why Jan or Bettina chose Montezuma

This is life on the edge of the jungle with nature intact. The river is a source of wildlife, a monkey highway with little tourism. Just 70 meters from the beach but totally fenced in, with lovely local caretakers Marvin and Cynthia. Our next neighbors are 500 yards away. Still it is just 2 miles from Montezuma

What makes this farmhouse unique

secure, authentic, with lots of local flair, low key, private and personal. You can learn a lot about life in the tropics and nature is very close!

Great house

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and another couple spent a week here in March and loved it. Private property, fenced in right across the street from the beach. We liked the location, not being right in the town of Montezuma and had rented a car for our stay in CR. The roads to the house are decent gravel roads. Not much traffic. The house itself is well equipped for cooking. 3 nice bedrooms with the sound of the surf to put you to sleep. Nature abounds, monkeys, lizards and remarkably few mosquitos. Not a far drive to get to cabo blanco reserve or the road across to Santa Teresa. A wonderful spot to vacation. I wish we had of been there when the mangos are ripe!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review. The sound of waves, yes, and the animals and being enough out of town to miss the party noise but still right next to a wonderful beach. We are glad you enjoyed the place just like we do.

Well maintained mini farm near the crashing surf.

  • 5 of 5

Clearly, this not your typical rental property. It is a comfortable open air home that has been lovingly constructed and maintained over the years. Unique features throughout the house provide clues to the creativity of Jan, the builder and architect of the structure. It was our privilege to meet both Jan and Bettina briefly during our visit. They have been more than responsive to all of our questions and requests. A portion of our stay was spent without a car so they graciously provided two bicycles for our use. Caretakers Cinthya and Marvin bent over backwards to make our stay comfortable. Most incredible of all however has been our proximity to ocean, Los Cedros River, and the surrounding forest. We knew that Costa Rica was famous for its wildlife, but honestly we were unprepared for the incredible sights and sounds of Finca de Los Cedros. Both my wife and I are former biology teachers. This place is heaven. Plus, the availability of milk, eggs, cheese, and mango juice produced here on the farm is truly wonderful.

Owner's Response: Thank you, David, for the wonderful review. For nature lovers our place was build and for maximal ventilation. Our climate changes strongly throuout the year and we tried to adapt the design of the house to it. You have been great guests and we hope to have you again.

Wonderful home by the ocean

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful home for us and our family. We have 4 kids and they loved the lagoon just across the road for fresh water swimming and rope swinging. The house is beautiful and you can hear and see the ocean from the lovely, open concept living space. Jan was so attentive to us, and any questions we had were answered right away. We saw so much wonderful nature while we were here and our kids were fascinated. My mother came for visit for 10 days, and she rented out the flat on the ground floor - it was perfect for her, and for all of us.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Pamela! I am glad that it worked out with your mom. That downstairs appartment has worked wonders with larger groups and gives a chance to escape and be on your own and still close by with the rest of the group. Hope to have you back.

fantastic property and location

  • 5 of 5

There was very little we didn't love about the place. The location is pretty much ideal. It's about half-way between Montezuma and Cabuya, both of which have great restaurants and other stuff to do, but far enough away to feel secluded. There are at least two nice beaches right by the property, as well as a fantastic river with swimming holes and waterfalls. The area is full of wildlife, with monkeys, coatis, anteaters, armadillos and much more visiting regularly.

The property itself is huge and includes cows, pigs, chicken, giant tropical trees, a wood shop and more. We spend a good day just exploring inside the fence. The two caretakers were always friendly and helpful, but discreet. We didn't feel "observed", on the contrary, they made our stay more pleasant. We were able to get fresh eggs, cheese and milk from them, as well as some bikes to make getting around easier. I also got a few lessons on picking and chopping the coconuts that grow on the property. There is also a fellow Canadian running the wood shop. It was far enough away from the main house that it never bothered us, and he is a great resource for local info.

The house was clean and well stocked. We cooked our own meals and lacked nothing. The layout is fantastic, three adjacent rooms with a shared common area in the middle that includes the kitchen. We also spend a lot of time just sitting around the yard/porch area at night. There is some air condition available, but we didn't use it. The first few nights were hot, but with the fan and the slotted windows, we adjusted quickly and it didn't bother us after a few days.

We never met Jan, but we communicated by phone and e-mail. He was always very helpful and prompt to reply. It felt good knowing that he was on the ball and we didn't have to worry about anything.

The two dogs deserve special mention. The older one looks and acts more like a lion than a dog, but is very sweet. The young one is a bit of a crazy puppy, but once he warms up to you, he's a adorable. They might look a bit scary, but they're really very nice and love going for walks. Just be sure you have a good grip on the leash.

We stayed for about 5 weeks, and loved every minute of it. The place quickly felt like home and I wish I was there right now. If possibly, we'll definitely be back.

A True "Local" Gem for Guests to Enjoy!

  • 5 of 5

First, let me start by explaining the people that you will deal with: the owner, Jan, was great to work with from the time of booking all the way through our stay. He was not there physically, but was easily accessible by phone, any time (we called him early once!). It is obvious that he is an active manager of the property, always looking for ways to improve and ensure a great stay for his guests.

His caretakers, husband and wife, are fantastic as well. They do not speak English, but Jan is always available to interpret. With the little Spanish I know, I was able to communicate back and forth with them just fine. Super friendly and helpful folks. The dogs that live on the property are great as well (keep them away from the chickens!!!)

The property itself is perfect for low-key, nature-loving groups, couples and families. If you are looking for a 24-hour party, I would stay right in Montezuma. If you are looking for a place close enough to walk to town, yet really secluded, this place is great. My favorite part of the property is the Rio Cedros which flows down, along the property, into a large, deep freshwater lagoon. This lagoon stretches all the way to the ocean. We had a lot of fun in this area. The beach is okay for swimming (watch the rocky areas), great for shore fishing, and the lagoon is one of the most refreshing places I have ever experienced. I highly suggest exploring a ways up the river (you won't regret it!), one highlight was having a troop of 7 or 8 Capuchin monkeys climb down from the canopy and hang out by the water with us! We were very close to them, far away from the nearest tourist. A very special experience.

The house itself is open air, in part. You will share it with some critters. It was fine. My wife, son and I were not put off in the least. In fact, it was great! The bedrooms are more private and very comfortable. I think it would get very hot in the house during the day, but we were always doing activities. There is a room with A.C. but we had no need for it.

In the area I would recommend spending a day at Cabo Blanco Reserve by Cabuya. The falls and beach at Montezuma are great. If you can make it over to Santa Teresa you should. But, by all means, spend a lot of time right at the lagoon, away from the tourists and closer to the authentic Costa Rica. Pura Vida!

Great ease, comfort, relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Too bad we couldn't stay longer. We arrived with two older kids who absolutely loved the farm, the cows, pigs, chickens, and dogs. A cow gave birth during our stay. Beach access was easy, and we chose to walk to Montezuma each day to experience the town and its beaches. The house is well equipped, and comfortable. Owners and caretakers were available and helpful. We hope to return again. Thanks for a lovely time!

Located between Montezuma for dining, excursions, tourist information, night life, car, bike and fourwheel rental and Cabuya/Cabo Blanco for low key country life, bird watching, dining, fishing, diving, surfing etc. , all to be reached by public bus, our place is away from it all but still close. Endless beaches and a river running all year right next to the house invite to explore. It forms an ever changing fresh water lagoon right in front of the house where locals and visitors mingle. It's better than any artifical pool and changes it's appearance with every season. There are also waterfalls to explore. Famous surf at Cedros beach is right in front of the house (good for learning) and Mal Pais and Santa Teresa surf beaches are 20 minutes away by car. There are tide pool, pelicans and lots of fish to be caught right from the shore.
