About Jan or Bettina

We moved to Los Cedros in 1992 onto our 100 hectar farm, working in farming, reforestation and construction. We also have a woodworkshop, a mango plantation, teak, pochote and cashew reforestation. We moved our artist workshop to San Jose lately and treat this as a gentleman farm.

Jan or Bettina purchased this farmhouse in 1992

Why Jan or Bettina chose Montezuma

This is life on the edge of the jungle with nature intact. The river is a source of wildlife, a monkey highway with little tourism. Just 70 meters from the beach but totally fenced in, with lovely local caretakers Marvin and Cynthia. Our next neighbors are 500 yards away. Still it is just 2 miles from Montezuma

What makes this farmhouse unique

secure, authentic, with lots of local flair, low key, private and personal. You can learn a lot about life in the tropics and nature is very close!

A True "Local" Gem for Guests to Enjoy!

A True "Local" Gem for Guests to Enjoy!

First, let me start by explaining the people that you will deal with: the owner, Jan, was great to work with from the time of booking all the way through our stay. He was not there physically, but was easily accessible by phone, any time (we called him early once!). It is obvious that he is an active manager of the property, always looking for ways to improve and ensure a great stay for his guests.

His caretakers, husband and wife, are fantastic as well. They do not speak English, but Jan is always available to interpret. With the little Spanish I know, I was able to communicate back and forth with them just fine. Super friendly and helpful folks. The dogs that live on the property are great as well (keep them away from the chickens!!!)

The property itself is perfect for low-key, nature-loving groups, couples and families. If you are looking for a 24-hour party, I would stay right in Montezuma. If you are looking for a place close enough to walk to town, yet really secluded, this place is great. My favorite part of the property is the Rio Cedros which flows down, along the property, into a large, deep freshwater lagoon. This lagoon stretches all the way to the ocean. We had a lot of fun in this area. The beach is okay for swimming (watch the rocky areas), great for shore fishing, and the lagoon is one of the most refreshing places I have ever experienced. I highly suggest exploring a ways up the river (you won't regret it!), one highlight was having a troop of 7 or 8 Capuchin monkeys climb down from the canopy and hang out by the water with us! We were very close to them, far away from the nearest tourist. A very special experience.

The house itself is open air, in part. You will share it with some critters. It was fine. My wife, son and I were not put off in the least. In fact, it was great! The bedrooms are more private and very comfortable. I think it would get very hot in the house during the day, but we were always doing activities. There is a room with A.C. but we had no need for it.

In the area I would recommend spending a day at Cabo Blanco Reserve by Cabuya. The falls and beach at Montezuma are great. If you can make it over to Santa Teresa you should. But, by all means, spend a lot of time right at the lagoon, away from the tourists and closer to the authentic Costa Rica. Pura Vida!

Great ease, comfort, relaxation

  • 5 of 5
Too bad we couldn't stay longer. We arrived with two older kids who absolutely loved the farm, the cows, pigs, chickens, and dogs. A cow gave birth during our stay. Beach access was easy, and we chose to walk to Montezuma each day to experience the town and its beaches. The house is well equipped, and comfortable. Owners and caretakers were available and helpful. We hope to return again. Thanks for a lovely time!

Wonderful!

This was our first trip to the tropics and it went really well. Every day we saw the howler monkeys passing by in the gigantic trees next to the house. Lizards, herons, pelicans, iguanas, hawks, vultures, nose bears, bats, squirrels and even an anteater were visiting the farm. We put up hammocks under the gigantic strangler fig on the property. The caretakers helped us to rent horses in Cabuya for a spectacular excursion to Mal Pais. After checking out the beach at low tide we found the perfect spot to body surf during high tide. There was a boogie board and a surfboard to rent. It felt good that the property is completely fenced in and that there is a friendly guard dog around. And it feels very good to be in the second story away from most the critters. Surprisingly there were no mosquitoes while we were there so we did not need the netting at all. If you love nature this is the place.

Owner's Response: We called the river next to the house a monkey highway. It is part of the biological corridor connecting Cabo Blanco with the Reserva Nicolas Wessberg. Thanks for the nice review.

Will be back!

The place is not in the village but close enough to walk into town. The local bus went by three or four times a day. It goes from Montezuma to Cabo Blanco National Park. So after shopping we caught it to come back with the groceries. You do not need a car at all. There also are plenty of taxis. The beach in front of the house is often deserted and has great spots to swim. It seemed very safe to us since there are rock formations to both sides of it. At two hundred meters there is a great surf spot popular with locals and foreigners. It is an easy left wave but only during high tide. For serious surfing we organized a ride to Mal Pais but the crowds over there were not our thing. We preferred the laid back feeling of Cabuya. There are two sea kayaks for rent at farm. We took them for a paddle from the house to the cemetery island where we saw plenty of fish while snorkeling and of course some strange graves. We also took a great day tour to Isla Tortuga from Montezuma where the snorkeling is even better. Coming back in the evening to cook and relax and listen to the waves made our stay unforgettable.

Perfect Vacation!

  • 5 of 5
We had such a good time at the house on Playa Cedros. Almost every day we did a different excursion: into the jungle along the river, to the cemetery island of Cabuya, over the hill to Santa Teresa to surf, relaxing in the whirlpools of Rio Lajas, even yoga classes in Montezuma. We got organic salads and veggies at the Saturday market and loved cooking in the open kitchen. We bought fresh milk, eggs and cheese from the farm almost every day. And we saw more animals than in the national parks we had visited. This is a great house even in the rain. Thanks to Cynthia and Marvin for taking good care of us and even getting us fresh fish. Hope to be back for longer.

Wonderful Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5
We had a terrific visit to this beautiful house by Montezuma. We loved it so much that we kept extending our stay for longer. As well as being open, full of light (without hot, direct sunlight) breezy, and beautiful, it was also comfortable, spacious, clean, and safe. The beds were comfy, the kitchen had everything we needed, and the internet connection was flawless. We all loved the long, wide, deep bathtub! The property is really lovely. We saw capuchin monkeys in the trees, beautiful huge iguanas, a friendly large toad, lizards, lots of amazing birds (hummingbirds included), and the sweet cows. My six year old went every morning to watch the cows being milked. She also loved the friendly dogs that live on the property. The house is located away from the noise and bustle of Montezuma, but an easy, short drive to shopping. There are great beaches in walking distance and many more within a short drive. Sometimes we would go out in the ocean and then swim back up the river at the back door to get home. A few minutes toward Cabuya there is yet another great river for kids to play (Rio Lajas). If you are looking for peace, beauty, beaches, rivers, and comfort, stay here. We'll be back to this gem of a house!

Located between Montezuma for dining, excursions, tourist information, night life, car, bike and fourwheel rental and Cabuya/Cabo Blanco for low key country life, bird watching, dining, fishing, diving, surfing etc. , all to be reached by public bus, our place is away from it all but still close. Endless beaches and a river running all year right next to the house invite to explore. It forms an ever changing fresh water lagoon right in front of the house where locals and visitors mingle. It's better than any artifical pool and changes it's appearance with every season. There are also waterfalls to explore. Famous surf at Cedros beach is right in front of the house (good for learning) and Mal Pais and Santa Teresa surf beaches are 20 minutes away by car. There are tide pool, pelicans and lots of fish to be caught right from the shore.
