If the idea of watching the waves crash on the rocks just outside your door from a tower in a fantasy house that melds elements of a castle with quaint Victorian charm, then this 3-story retreat in Pacific Grove has your name on it.
There is really no categorizing this historic home built in 1883 that sits just steps from Monterey Bay and a gorgeous walking/bicycling trail that meanders for 7 miles along the coastline. You're less than a 10 minute walk along this trail to Cannery Row and the aquarium.
The exterior of this whimsical 4-bedroom, 2-bath board-and-batten dwelling, called “Captain's Castle,” comes complete with gargoyles, gables and stained glass windows. The predominant feature is a square tower that offers a bird's-eye view of all the comings and goings on the bay.
As you open the front door to the entry, with its coved ceiling and built-in cabinetry with insets of royal blue, topaz and wine that match the stained-glass panels framing virtually every window in the house, you will feel you are in your own seaside inn. The entry leads to a cozy Victorian-style living room with a high paneled ceiling, brass-faced gas fireplace and an antique chandelier. The elegant furnishings include an ivory brocade sofa, 2 azure velvet chairs, glass and metal coffee and end tables and patterned area rug. Both rooms look out to the bay. The 1st story and most of the 2nd have hardwood floors.
You will be greeted by complimentary hors d’oeuvres and wine or sparkling cider, passes to the Spa on the Plaza in Monterey and tickets for a Scheid Winery tasting in Carmel. An assigned concierge vacation house manager is available to assist you during your stay. We have also provided spa amenities in the bathrooms, plush bathrobes and luxury towels.
Enjoy movies or conversation in a spacious family room with hardwood wainscoting, a cocoa-colored sectional, ottoman and a 50” flat-screen TV. An open counter pass-through with stools connects the family room to the updated kitchen with its beautiful wood cabinets and slate gray Corian countertops. Everything you could desire for preparing and serving fabulous gourmet meals is available, including a Viking stainless steel gas range, Sub Zero side-by-side refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and beautiful dishes and tabletop accoutrements.
Enjoy coffee or casual meals at a round table for 4 in a sun room facing the fenced-in back patio or take your food outdoors to the wrought-iron pergola equipped with 2 comfortable chairs, a metal table and chairs and umbrella. Pets are welcome.
More formal meals can be served in a dining room with paneling with blue insets, a vaulted ceiling and a bay window. A wooden Queen Anne table and upholstered chairs can seat up to 8.
A full bathroom on this floor has a claw-foot bathtub/shower with a surround curtain. A separate laundry room has a stacking washer/dryer.
The 2nd floor has 4 bedrooms. The first – with a king bed with luxury linens and a white coverlet and tucked comforter -- has windows that look to a park and the bay. A 2nd bedroom, overlooking the backyard, has a king with luxury linens, white-on-white coverlet and comforter, an antique bedside table and a rocking chair. A 3rd smaller bedroom, with ocean vistas, has a queen with a white coverlet and yellow comforter.
Bask in ocean views from the king bed -- fitted with a white coverlet and ivory comforter and blue and yellow accents -- in the master bedroom.
A large white-tiled bathroom with plum accents features a deep claw-foot tub and a step-in basin shower with water pipes exposed as in days of yore (directions for operation provided).
The piece de resistance, however, is the 3rd-floor tower with its panoramic views of the bay during the day and the twinkling lights of adjacent cities at night. Two day-bed couches (which can be made into a queen with Memory Foam topper) and a round coffee table provide the perfect setting for morning coffee or happy hour.
Garage and driveway can park 4 cars.

Guestbook comments from the manager
We have stayed in several houses in Pacific Grove and the Captain's Castle is by far the best yet! We all appreciated the view and location that the Castle provided in the tower. It was truly a special experience and we can not wait to return. Thank you for sharing this exceptional place with us.
