A great time in Gasquet!

  • 5 of 5

We spent at week mid-August in Gasquet. Had a wonderful time -- perfect weather every day for hiking and swimming in the river. The house suited our needs (family of 4, 2 girls ages 11 and 15) perfectly. We loved relaxing on the deck and watching the water go by. The kitchen was well equipped and easy to work in. We enjoyed the fact that much of the house is "vintage". It reminded us of family vacation homes from the past that remain dear to us. And the updates are tasteful and high quality -- really nice windows/sliding doors out to the river deck. One of the most relaxing family vacations we have had -- it was hard to come back to the bustle/crowds of the SF bay area, not to mention school ;(.

Some down time

  • 4 of 5

The house backs right up to the river and the view is amazing. We stayed for a week in September so the rivers were low in water and not much fishing to be had but we did enjoy being so remote and found plenty of nice hiking in the area. Do not go here for good restaurants as there are none within 40 miles but the house itself is well-equipped and we tended to cook either in the kitchen or on the outside, wood bar-b-que most nights. There is no phone reception at the house which is what we wanted/ needed and we got reacquainted with games like Monopoly and poker which were thoughtfully supplied by the owners. This is definitely a place to relax and get back to old-fashioned conversation and healthy living. Just what the doctor ordered!

Owner's Response: The reviewer is correct that some cell phone carriers can be spotty in the area but Verizon cell service is excellent in the area and at the house. There is high speed WIFI at the house as well.

Relaxing & Very Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful time in this beautiful house. It was spacious and very quiet. Our favorite part was sitting on the deck- eating, reading or napping- while watching the crystal clear blue river. The outdoor fireplace was fantastic, and the kitchen was ideal for making meals at home. I recommend hiking or driving through the Jedediah Smith state park and tubing down the river (if you're feeling adventurous!) The owner was very helpful and gave lots of suggestions for things to see and do in the area. I have no complaints, I would definitely recommend it if you're looking to get away from it all.

Beautiful! Very cool house, great location.

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the River House recently and must report that this was one of the most relaxing weeks of my adult life. First, the area is one of the most beautiful parts of the California and the Smith River is perhaps the prettiest and cleanest in the country. Who would guess that California offers such a place?

We spent our mornings and afternoons on the deck over the river. At night we BBQ'd on the 1940's stone fireplace BBQ. My girlfriend is an avid cook so we also found the kitchen well stocked and nice to work in.

We chose the bedroom on the river and at night we could hear the water from bed. In the morning we awoke to the amazing beauty and sound of the river. We saw a group of River Otters on our last day there.

Although the house is an older home, it is maintained very well and has a great feeling about it. The owners have great style and it is reflected in almost every detail. The outdoor areas are beautiful and spacious. There are decks and beautiful native plants everywhere.

We spent many days at the river swimming and hanging out. We also hiked up to Stoney Creek and tubed back down to the house. The water is crystal clear.

I highly recommend the River House for couples looking for total escape. The only downside was the WiFi actually works a little too fast for the surroundings. I would have preferred no WiFi.

We plan to come back next year.

Relaxing and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful home decorated in the 50's/ 60's style. the deck overlooking the river was a wonderful place to unwind after a day of hiking in the redwoods. The house is a bit musty but after the windows have been open for awhile it clears out. My only recommendation for the home would be a shower in the front bath.

The Smith River is one of the crown jewels of the National Wild and Scenic River System, which recognizes and protects rivers across the country. More than three hundred miles of the Smith River System are designated wild and scenic, more than any other river in the country. The emerald-green Smith River flows freely and naturally, without a single dam, for its entire length—the only major system in California to do so.

Hiking in this area is fabulous. If you enjoy communing with nature this area and retreat is the perfect match for your rejuvenation and inspiration.
