Vicki and I live in Austin Texas and personally renovated a great deal of the interior and rear decking. I'm a Boston native and she's a Texan-so we have an interesting time figuring out each other's accents! I work in the leadership development field and Vicki teaches private voice. Visiting the cabin 3-4 times a year to stay and vacation/work is one of our favorite things to do. Vicki is a highly creative and hard-working renovation 'hobbyist', and this cabin has been her favorite project. Me-I'm the janitor and handyman. We don't have any kids, but we do have three dogs who travel everywhere with us, and one of the reasons we chose this cabin is the fenced yard and deck which allows dogs to have some roaming area.
When I first moved out west from Boston I ended up in New Mexico, and used to ride my motorcycle up into Cloudcroft. I promised myself I would one day buy a cabin in the Sacramento Mountains, and finally did it! New Mexico is a special place for us-my Mom, brother and niece live in Las Cruces. Cloudcroft is a perfect getaway for us because it's so small and relatively undeveloped (compared to nearby Ruidoso). Getting up to the mountains is something we plan for and anticipate all year.
The deck did it for us-looks out at the mountains and a wonderful view of the meadows. It's surrounded and protected by huge pine trees that provide great shade for reading. We just installed a high-efficiency woodstove that just about heats the whole place in the winter. And it's great for dogs, especially the smaller breeds. The deck is up high and the railings are fenced so dogs can't slip through. are close enough to This is a unique cabin-we get lots of repeat vacationers who say they love the place. The kitchen is fully stocked and great for preparing meals-the breakfast nook is a great place to drink coffee and look at the forest. Plus, there's a finished play room below the deck with an electric fireplace, daybed, small pool table, TV and PlayStation-great place to stash the kids or getaway to do some quiet reading. What we love about this place is it's out of town by just 4 miles, hidden on a hillside with a dirt packed road, so it's a super quiet area. Feels like we have it all to ourselves, and there is lots of walking.
At almost 9,000 feet of elevation, Cloudcroft boasts picturesque views and mild temperatures. Only 850 people occupy this small town, where one trip to the Western Bar will make any visitor feel at home. Start your visit on Burro Street, the town’s main street and commonplace, then make your way to Highway 82 to eat at a local dig.
A local landmark, The Lodge Resort provides a wide array of recreation options, including golf, biking, snowmobiling, hiking, snow tubing and cross country skiing. There’s also a spa, swimming pool and shopping on site. Visitors can additionally horseback ride, camp, ski, fish or hunt locally.
Kids will enjoy Zenith Park and the nearby Toy Train Depot, with model trains and a museum, while the whole family can take advantage of ice-skating at The Village, tennis at Frazer Courts, several hiking trails, and skiing at Ski Cloudcroft. Cloudcroft Light Opera Company offers entertainment beyond the karaoke at the Western.
Last, don’t miss the Sacramento Mountains Museum & Pioneer Village, where the story of the first settlers here and Cloudcroft’s development since are portrayed. View the village, exhibits, chapel and general store for a feel of the area’s past in the present.
