Overview

Prince Edward County Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

Farmhouse, 5 Bedrooms, 4.5+ Baths,private extensive grounds.

Harmonious Fox House

Harmonious Fox House is a beautifully restored century old farmhouse, situated on 18 scenic acres with direct and private access to the Bay of Quinte.

Built by Mr Harmonious Fox in the late 1800's,the house was constructed with an independent space for his mother (the west wing).

It is an ideal spot for touring the many vineyards, restaurants and beaches of The County. Additionally you can enjoy fishing (with some of the best pickerel in Ontario in the bay), cycling, canoeing, photography and bird watching.

Large, airy characterful rooms are a key part of the charm of this very attractive country retreat. The bright and spacious eat-in kitchen is a pleasure to both prepare food in and to eat, socialize and catch up on all of the day’s activities. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything a family could need including coffee maker and a cappuccino machine , new stainless steel fridge freezer with iced water, crushed ice and cube dispenser . Enjoy the high end Hi Fi system and access to broadband internet .The hand made cherry wood table has seating for up to 12 people.

Walk through the sliding doors onto a large deck complete with 2 tables, 12 chairs, sun lounger and bbq. This deck has wonderful direct views of the meadows and water.

On the main floor there is also a large and comfortable living room, complete with board games, puzzles and books together with High Definition satellite tv.

From the living room you can walk through sliding double doors into the West Wing .

This part of the house was built by Mr Fox for his mother who lived with the family but had some independence, and can also be entered through a separate door from the garden . This is a lovely bright room with plenty of space to relax in a peaceful spot away from the rest of the house . Read a book by the pot bellied stove and enjoy the views to the lake across the meadow. Up a separate staircase leading from this room is the West Wing bedroom with 2 Queen size beds . There is a full bathroom with jacuzzi bath on the main floor . The West wing has a sunroom with full size table tennis table.

Off the living room is the main floor bedroom complete with a bay window overlooking a meadow that fronts the water .This room has a queen size bed and an en-suite three piece bathroom with shower.

Back to the main house ,on the main floor there is a two piece powder room and laundry room with washer & dryer and a sun-room with foosball table.

On the second floor there are three bedrooms. The first is a large bright bedroom with a queen size bed and an en-suite three piece bathroom with shower.

The remaining two upstairs bedrooms are also good sized. One bedroom has a queen bed and satellite tv. The other bedroom has both a queen and twin bed. These two connecting rooms share a four piece bathroom and a walk out to the top balcony with stunning views of the bay.

The property is completely private and has several trails that enable to you wander through the woods or meadows at your own pace. Perfect for gentle exercising and relaxing and enjoying the sights & sounds of nature

The vegetable garden has 4 raised beds with seasonal tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, beans, lettuce, herbs to be enjoyed by our guests

The shoreline is a 5 minute walk from the steps at the foot of the deck. There you can access the lake and launch the kayaks. Its a sandy bottomed lake with a very gradual slope – perfect for children. The water is also very warm Please bring water shoes as the sand sometimes contains hidden rocks.

A public boat launch is at Northport only 1 km. away and County Shores RV park (3 minutes drive) has boats for hire by the half day. Picton is a 20 minute drive. Local wineries are mostly within a 30 minute drive, Sandbanks Provincial Park is about 30 minutes.

Guests at this property are welcome to enjoy amenities such as two single and one tandem kayak, complete with paddles and PFD’s, horseshoes, volleyball , foosball, and table tennis.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Harmonious Fox House is the perfect place for a family getaway, we had a fabulous and relaxing vacation The house is huge with all the amenities you have at home and some you wish you had. The yard is large and very private, the place comes with lots of games for the kids to play indoors and outdoors. Most importantly the owners are wonderful to deal with and will be helpful before and after your stay.

Great family getaway and my children didn't want to leave!

Great family getaway and my children didn't want to leave!
  • 4 of 5
This house is wonderful! It is absolutely huge, spacious and a very well manicured property. I see the review below concerned about it not being good for small children but mine had a blast.(5 and 4 years old)

We stayed with two families, two children each and there was room for another! The house is very well equipped for dining, entertainment, and enjoying the outdoors. The property is well taken care for, nature trails leading to a small pond as well as swimming in the bay. The bed of the bay is a little soft but you don't sink, if the feeling of it bothers you aqua shoes from Canadian Tire will make it pleasant for you. The water is no more than 3' deep, warm and very calm so swimming kayaking and SUPing(i brought my own SUP) was delightful. The yard is huge for soccer, volleyball, boccie ball and general play can all be done at once with space to spare.

The area is beautiful, very scenic. Wed did have vehicles and we went into town for a little shopping and ice cream. Wonderful community. The Sandbanks is also very close and a wonderful beach area. Tip, park by the store, easiest walk to the beach and less busy.

Close to the house is a great park for the kids and areas to fish(we try to stay away from swimming areas and we caught countless Perch, Bluegills, Rock Bass, and Pumpkinseed.

In the evenings the deck is very private and there are two living rooms to unwind in. Noise didn't carry upstairs to the bedrooms although I don't think it mattered. There is so much to do in the area I think the fresh air and activity was enough for the kids to fall asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillows.

And don't worry about rainy days, the house is equipped with board games, Foosball, Ping Pong and satellite TV. now that I think of it hide and seek would have been a blast too! Luckily we had great weather but if you like to wake up slowly with a coffee foosball and ping pong was enough to keep the kids busy as long as you need.

All in all we got all the R&R we needed that week. The only sad part is it's over too soon.

Lovely & Spacious!

Lovely & Spacious!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this home. It is lovely and spacious with many updated features. Tastefully decorated, clean and we enjoyed the breeze coming in the open windows throughout the house. Fresh brewed coffee in the early morning...so peaceful on the deck while watching the birds travel from tree to tree. Picton and Sandbanks, wineries are just a few options enjoyed. Preparing dinner in the spacious kitchen and an opportunity to enjoy sunsets were relaxing. Reading, games and movies made for great family evenings without our laptops...what a concept! Thoroughly enjoyed our vacation!

A great few days.

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Foxhouse with our two children. We loved everything. The kids really enjoyed the various activities including the table tennis, table football, volleyball and kayaking.
We swam in the bay from the property every day. The water is warm and clear. The access is from a grassy bank. The first 6 feet or so was quite muddy but then it becomes sandy.
We all spent time at the pond which is teeming with wildlife including fish, frogs and some amazing dragonflies.
We picked fresh veggies from the vegetable gardens. The beans and tomatoes were delicious!
The house itself is “stunning” as are the gardens and the views. The owners were accessible and quick to respond to any questions we had.
I would recommend this property to anyone who really loves the countryside. This is not your typical cottage on a lake. It is a very large old farmhouse with loads of land to explore. It does not have a sandy beach. It isn’t described as having one. We got our fix of sandy beaches at nearby Sandbanks. The house is very comfortable and well equipped with all mod cons. We can’t wait to go back! An all-round great family vacation.

A wonderful second visit!

  • 5 of 5
We love to travel and have rented many properties throughout cottage country, Prince Edward County, Italy, France, Amsterdam and Hudson Valley! We look for modern amenities mixed with charm and local fare.

The first time my husband and I came to this more beautiful, quaint and inspiring home, we fell in love! From the well-stocked kitchen, the beautiful views, the comfy bedrooms and all the local and on-property things to do this is a perfect location to stay in Prince Edward County.

This second time I brought my team for a brainstorming and educational session. We used the living room for our keynote speaker, the large kitchen table for team meals and the beautiful outdoor area for a brainstorming! With five bathrooms and many beds, each team member, all women, were very comfortable.

One afternoon we toured the area wineries, kayaked right off the property, meandered through the beautiful, movie worthy path to the water and swam in the sandy water!

We look forward to returning soon!

Not a good location for young children!

  • 3 of 5
Beautiful, relaxing home as advertised BUT no beach (due to high water we were told) and bottom is mucky and weedy - not sandy. Very disappointing for our granddaughter!

The home is on a very busy road with all manner of vehicles travelling at significant speeds.

Many window screens missing! Beautiful breezes come off the bay but we were unable to open a number of windows leading to a few hot, stuffy rooms. You can only open one window in the main floor bedroom so it was unbearable some nights.

Seeing the pictures of the frog pond and meadow when searching for a family vacation site, I expected our grandchildren would enjoy the property. Unfortunately, the property is so marshy the mosquitoes are thriving. One visit to the pond area convinced everyone in our party to stay far away from there.

When on holidays, I like to relax with the newspaper online in the mornings before anyone else is awake. After warning emails from the property owners before our arrival about a previous occupant getting a very large internet bill, we were nervous to do anything online beyond checking for emails. Quite surprising to have such a limitation.

Owner's Response: We were sorry to hear that you did not think the property is suitable for small children as we have had many small children stay and have a wonderful time.

The bottom of the Bay is Sandy but because of unusually high water levels this year, due to the wet weather, the entrance to the bay is a little muddy…which is why we laid stepping stones for guests to take one step over the mud and onto the sandy bottom. It is not “weedy”.
The house is adjacent to County Rd 15. A small regional road that is never busy, although the local populace does have to go and from work and there is an occasional local farmer passing by in his tractor!

The house is a 19th century farmhouse that is very high quality in terms of furnishings and amenities. There are opening windows with screens throughout the house. One or two of the original ones don’t open but we do have quiet and very efficient fans in the two rooms where you can open some but not all the windows.

The frog pond is delightful and a real inspirational and educational bonus for kids as the frogs are huge and colourful…but we are in the middle of the countryside near the lake and after rain there will be mosquitoes. We often sit by the frog pond with a coffee and newspaper mid- morning when the sun is up with no sign of mosquitoes.

Finally the internet as we discussed, is fine to use for reading emails and browsing any text based sites including Facebook and newspapers. The problem occurs when people stream or download music and movies, as we have limited bandwidth. The ‘large internet bill’ guests let their kids download as many movies as they wanted to view. We are not in the city with unlimited data plans. We have a rural facility that needs to be enjoyed
as such.
As far as being recommended only for over 55's and girls groups ….our 4 sons aged 15 to 23 and their friends who love all the many activities available both inside and out, including the table tennis, the kayaking, the volleyball and the beautiful Bay of Quinte, would disagree!

Peaceful Place

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed at the Fox house, this is our 3rd visit. We love this place. Such openness and clean air which made us very relaxed. This was definitely what we were looking for as a nice getaway from city life. Just the two of us so we used the main floor. I love how they opened up the west wing. Looks like there is so much more room. It's great if you take your whole clan for any events! For us October is a great time to be there because we get to use the pot belly :) It makes for cozy evenings with the fire going after any kind of activity you had during the day. Yes, we will definitely come again and recommend to our friends and family! I'd like to say to the owner, thank-you so much giving us this opportunity. You have done such a wonderful job with your property!

Owner's Response: It has really made a huge difference to the house opening up the west Wing . The views from the windows are stunning and the rooms are so bright and spacious. I really love the original features like the wainscotting . The Jacuzzi bath has been a big hit with our sons !
