We come from opposite ends of the world, I from Manila, Philippines and my husband from New York City. For 29 years we owned and operated a restaurant in downtown Boise, Now we have embarked on a new life, I am writing the restaurant cookbook and my husband has a new career in finance. We arrived in Nicaragua in 1999 on the recommendation of our Nicaraguan Coffee Roaster. Over the years prior, we had talked about Nicaragua, but never gone. Early in 99, Carlos said now was the time to come and coincidentally International Living was offering their first land/home tour of Nicaragua. We are not 'tour' folks generally, however the tour gave us the opportunity to see a lot of the country. When the tour was complete, we drove north to Jinotega to coffee country. We loved the country and left as owners of property in San Juan del Sur. From the moment I set food on Nicaragua soil, I felt at home - interestingly it shares the same latitude as Manila, my birth home. Our plan was to build a home in San Juan and retire part of the year there. With house plans in hand we arrived in 2007, plannng to start construction, however we realized we wanted someplace quieter. So, we drove down to our favourite place, Playa Coco, entered into the Parque, asked to see lots for sale- still thinking building- then were shown our home - the rest is history. Casa Piancito is our perfect retreat from the snows of Idaho where we live. We love breakfasting on the large terrace with local birds joining us and having the surf as our music.
Stephanie purchased this house in 2008
Why Stephanie chose San Juan del Sur
Playa Coco has been our destination every trip that we have made to Nicaragua. When we initially came to Nicaragua, we were looking to find a location we could reach in a day's journey from our home in Idaho. Indeed we can do this!
What makes this house unique
Located just minutes from the beach, our home is nestled in a canopy of trees which provides needed shelter from the sun and heat. We love the openness of the design, the hardwood floors and walls, the unique venting system of the roof. We have used the air-conditioning once in the five years we have owned the home. The house is placed so that all you see is the large garden of trees and hear the sound of the surf. The beach is such a quick walk and we value the privacy our home gives us, located off the beach. Our home was built and lived in by a French couple and is furnished with French style wrought iron furniture. This home captures the Southeast Asian style of beach home that I grew up loving. The dining room glass table reflects the tree branches that surround the home - a lovely piece of natural art! As restaurant owners, we love the kitchen and some day soon will use the Beehive oven in our garden. Having such cordial staff as work at the Parque is a treat. Laundry and cleaning are done as we need it. When something needs to be fixed the gentlemen who work in the metal and wood shop arrive and the work gets done. This last trip I made new curtains for the bedrooms and we are building a new walkway from the small access street. We love the diversity of homes in the Parque, not one is the same as another. We were looking for a quiet 'paradise' and we found it!
