This luxury home overlooks Lake Damariscotta with long views up the lake. At the far end is two miles of conservation land. It sits on ten acres with more than 500 feet of frontage, next to an 85 acre private preserve. We swim from June into early October with the eagles overhead and the loons next to us.
We built this home in 2005 and just this winter added a very large, but cozy Master Bedroom with full bath and sleeping porch. Sit in bed or next to the gas fireplace and look out a 12' X 12' window at the setting sun.
This is our year round home and we love it for it's privacy and yet we are 12 minutes from the bustling town of Damariscotta with restaurants, movie theater, book stores and lots of shopping (not to mention a river which leads to the Atlantic Ocean) Lots of light thanks to cathedral living room and skylights throughout. 3 1/2 baths including two showers and two bathtubs.
First floor: walk in foyer with a half bath opens into a cathedral living room. Skylights provide lots of light. 180 degree views of the lake. Walk out to the ledge and sit next to the herb garden look out over the water and listen to the loons. Back inside, there's a wood burning fireplace. Dinning room is off the living room. A large French country table seats 12. A screen porch is off the dining room. Bright kitchen with lots of space for cooking and great views of a stand of birch trees. Granite counter tops. All the amenities for cooking including a Breville oven.
Media room includes an 84 inch Sharp high def TV and a view of the lake. A large book case with books and first run movies on DVD. You'll be distracted from watching TV when the sun sets out this window. Gorgeous light all day long in this room
Office is next to the media room and leads through french doors into the new master bedroom.
No words will describe this room. 600 square feet added in early 2013. A bookcase surrounds a cherry mantle and a black cast iron gas fireplace. An arched 12' X 12' window looks out at the lake and the setting sun. 16' ceiling with fan. Full master bath with glass shower, claw foot bathtub and stained glass window.
If that's not enough, there's a dressing room, walk in closet and a sleeping porch next to the private preserve and overlooking the lake.
Second floor: 3 bedrooms. One with a king size bed and view of the lake, two dressers and a dressing table, Large closet. A second bedroom has a queen size bed, two dressers, large closet and bookcase. A third bedroom has twin beds with a view of the lake, and a dresser
A balcony overlooks the main living room. There are two couches and a bookcase filled with kids books and stuffed animals. A full bath includes shower and tub combination.
Skylights bring in additional daylight.
Bottom floor. Go down the stairs to a private enclave, away from the rest of your family. We call this the studio. A double four poster bed with a baby grand piano and full bath. It over looks the lake. Slide the door and you can step right out and go down to the water for a swim.
The property. As described above this property is spectacular for its view and its privacy. It is reached by driving down a well maintained (year round) road coming off of Route One, 7 miles north of Damariscotta. The last half mile is our house and only one other. The road dead ends at the private preserve and our house. We swim 4 months out of the year. In the summer the sun sets directly in front or the house. We sit on the dock for hours. We swim around the point into Deep Cove, a large, quiet place with only one house set back from the water's edge Great fishing if you like. But it's the eagles during the day and the loons at night which we love.
Note: the exterior picture of our home was taken before the Master Bedroom was completed in January of 2013. We will add a new image once the warm weather arrives.
Charlie and Sarah Stuart. Sarah is a writer of novels and non fiction books. Her work has also appeared in The New Yorker. Charlie is a documentary filmmaker. We have three grown children.
We bought these ten acres, designed and built the house in 2005 adding a master bedroom in the fall of 2012 finishing it up in early 2013. We swim a lot, and lake swimming in Maine is lovely four months out of the year (unlike cold ocean water, this lake reaches comfortable temperatures). This lake is pristine and unspoiled with lots and lots of conservation land. While we love out privacy, we also appreciate being near the busy and lovely New England town of Damariscotta, and only a short drive to Rockland and Camden.
The Property: Privacy, unspoiled views and the sunset
The house: a picture is worth a thousand words. Take a look.
Just about anything anyone would need. Fresh water, salt water, many activities indoor and out. Too numerous to list here
