Photos and Description of the Aeolian Islands vacation villa rental
Villa, 4 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Imagine yourself vacationing in this beautifully restored large, bright airy grand villa (over 375 sq. m /4,000 sq. ft.) with thick walls, high ceilings and large floor-to-ceiling windows that swing open. On two levels, this villa has four spacious bedrooms, three beautifully done baths, front and rear terraces, a roof terrace, beautiful ocean views, and a large flowering garden with plum and lemon trees.

Antique ceramic and terracotta tiles throughout, an authentic palmento (wine press) on the lower level, a modern kitchen done in traditional Aeolian style, individual air conditioning units in each room, and top quality furnishings, linens and dinnerware combine to make this a memorable vacation destination.

Located on a quiet (pedestrian only), narrow street in the centuries old commune of Santa Marina, it is only a few minutes’ walk to the bakers, butchers, fish market, produce stands, restaurants, shops and boutiques of Santa Marina. And only a five minutes’ walk to the beach, the marina which is filled with large, beautiful yachts throughout the summer, and the port where the hydrofoil ferries take you to the other islands.

The 2nd level master bedroom has an antique reproduction queen size bed, an 8.5 m/28 ft. cathedral ceiling with skylight, and an attached bath with basin, bidet, toilet and tub. The largest 2nd level bedroom has a 8.5 m/28 ft. curved ceiling, an antique frame queen size bed, a twin bed, room for one or two of the available three rolling beds, entrance onto front terrace and garden view. The third 2nd level bedroom has 4.5 m/15 ft. antique painted ceiling, an antique reproduction king size bed, room for one rolling bed, and entrance onto the front terrace. The other 2nd level bathroom has a basin, toilet and shower, and garden and ocean views.

Also on the 2nd level are the large living room with antique painted ceiling, TV (local reception), all region DVD player; the large (seats 16) dining room which opens onto the rear terrace with steps leading to roof terrace; and the kitchen (double basin, gas cooktop, electric oven, microwave, complete set of kitchen ware).

The fourth bedroom is on the 1st level, opens onto the garden, has a high wooden beamed ceiling, a queen sized bed, a twin bed, and room for two rolling beds. The lower level bath has a basin, toilet and shower. Also on the first level are a very large open room with a second refrigerator and the palmento wine press on one side; and a front room with a divan/twin bed.

Enjoy swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing and sailing in the crystal clear blue waters of Salina, the most beautiful of the seven Aeolian Islands. Named by the Greeks for Aeolus, the god of the winds, the islands have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their unspoiled beauty and unique volcanic geology.

Rent a small motorboat to explore the dramatic coastline, hidden coves and secluded beaches of the island. Visit the ruins of a Bronze Age settlement; take a wine tasting tour of the island’s vineyards known worldwide for their malvasia wine. For the adventurous, hike to the 965 m/3,165 ft. summit of extinct volcano behind Santa Marina for breathtaking views of the other islands and Sicily. Visit the five other small communes on Salina by rented motor scooter, car or enjoy the scenery while taking the efficient buses that run hourly.

A 20 minute hydrofoil ride will take you to Lipari, the largest of the islands, for more shopping, restaurants; tour the historic cathedral fortress that towers about the town, visit the world class archaeological museum there with exhibits dating from 3,000 B.C. Or take the hydrofoils to the island of Stromboli and its active volcano; there are guided evening tours of slopes of the volcano, or a take dinner cruise around the island and see the sputtering glow of the volcano.

Enjoy the sun, the natural beauty, the relaxed ambience and the exquisite cuisine of these islands. Salina’s many restaurants range from family friendly to fine dining, or you can prepare your own feast from the island’s fresh and bountiful produce, fish, meats and baked goods – buon appetito!

Very nice stay in Grand Villa Salina

5 of 5
Submitted: August 30, 2012 Stayed: August 2012
We had a very nice time within Grand Villa Salina. This is a large very charming and comfortable house with huge nice bedrooms and lounge and several terraces plus a nice garden with a plum tree giving every day delicious plums.
The villa is in the right area, at a walking distance from nice stores, cafes and a beach and it was perfectly clean and already provided with some products like water, olive oil (we are in Italy!), etc which is quite rare but very nice when you arrive somewhere.
The cousin of the owner, Marusca, kindly took care of us and she is a very sweet person, as well as the owner Mary Ann. It took me the opportunity to use my Italian, which is unfortunately very poor, but we managed to understand eachother.
I will highly recommend this property to my friends if they wish to go to Eaolian Islands.

The Grand Villa is an amazing property right in a great location on Salina. Santa Maria is a great town and the Villa is right off the main street(pedestrian only) and you can walk to everything in town and to thegreat snorkeling and swimming, the ferry, etc. We loved eating outside on the balcony at nite looking out on the ocean and other islands. We really enjoyed going to the little nearby markets to shop and then cook at the Villa. There are also a lot of great restaurants you can walk to. Mary Ann, the owner, is amazing and was incredibly helpful. Her cousin met us at the ferry and took us to the Villa.
Salina is a magical island that we totally fell in love with. You can walk a few blocks from the Villa and catch ferries that go to 6 other nearby islands and Salina has a lot to see and do also. Stromboli Island has an active Volcano and we took a boat tour there and watch lava coming out of the volcano at night. We spent 8 nites in Salina and would of liked to stay a lot more. We like Salina so much that we decided to get married there next summer instead of in California.

Fantastic stay in Salina, Sicily, Aeolian Islands

A group of 7 Californians (5 adults and 2 older teenagers) stayed at the Grand Villa for 6 nights in late June 2012. We can only give high praise for the stay in a truly “grand villa” as it was everything we had hoped for and more. It was obvious they have done some recent renovations and put a lot of effort in and comfort to the villa. The space was HUGE and more than enough space to sleep over 12 without being too close to others. The owners kept the feel from the old villas but modernized it in all the right ways (e.g., AC in most rooms) for visitors to the island. We have rented quite a few places in Europe through VRBO and found this villa among the best overall. It was loaded with everyday items like a more-than-fully equipped kitchen but furniture and amenities that made it feel more like home than a rental. Also, the villa had a number of terraces with panoramic views of the island, sea, and even distant volcanic islands (Panarea, Stromboli). Each morning we could go down and have a delicious coffee/cappuccino or granites (you have to try them) as it was a very short distance to the center piazza. There is nothing quite like swimming in that cerulean water. The biggest plus was simply that it was comfortable accommodations, which helped make the stay more authentic and relaxing. There is so much to see around the islands that this was a great central point to see it all. We rented a boat on 2 separate occasions and really saw the Mediterranean up close with all its life and beauty. There aren’t many English speaking people that seem to come to Salina (especially at that time of year) but it was a grand experience to explore the island like Aeolians as we believe this group of islands should be better known as a vacation destination. Plus, there is a local representative (a charming Marusca) that can help with anything that comes up. We all agreed that we would come back and rent the Grand Villa again since it was such a positive experience and we got out of the trip exactly what we wanted – to swim in the Mediterranean, have plenty of good food (the seafood is varied and amazing), local delicious wines, and plenty of rest ‘n relaxation.

Wonderful July 2011 stay

5 of 5
Submitted: August 20, 2011 Stayed: July 2011
We stayed in the Grand Villa Salina for two weeks in July, 2011 and would strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to experience an Italian island largely unaffected by the rest of the world. The Villa is a classic, finely restored, Aeolian urban house. We lived mainly on the second floor where there are three quiet air-conditioned bedrooms. A living room, a completely equipped kitchen and dining room and a terrace over the garden completed the floor. Perhaps best of all was a terrace on top of all this with views of the sea and neighboring islands --- a remarkable place for moonlit dinners. (The ground floor was also excellent, complete with a large stone wine vat, but our family of four had little occasion to use its sitting rooms and auxiliary bed.)
We hesitated about committing to so much time in a small town. In fact, though the villa was excellent, we found that two weeks left us wanting more time for the other Aeolian islands (so much fun to explore), the island of Salina itself, and the web of extraordinarily warm and generous Italians and expatriates we met from introductions by the owner.
Salina exceeded our expectations. We loved the distinctive character of the five villages and the ease of taking the hourly bus on the road between them. After two weeks in Santa Marina (the villa’s location) we were still finding different places to swim, to eat, and to explore. Fish from the Pescheria down the street, combined with lemon from the villa’s trees, charcoaled on the villa’s grill and served on the terrace, would alone have been sufficient attraction. But on thinking back, we pine for pastas from two of our favorite Santa Marina restaurants.
The people hugely added to our trip. Though Italian varied for the four of us from near zero to near fluent, all of us were adopted by a range of English and English and Italian speakers, told the best restaurants and swimming places, helped in renting a boat with captain for a day’s circumnavigation of Salina, and for having drinks and even an occasional meal talking about island life.
For some people, this will not be the right place: steps in the villa may be too steep for anyone infirm; summer heat is strong; Americans are scarce; the beaches are volcanic and therefore rocky (bring river walker or other such shoes!); be prepared to be only intermittently understood if you speak only English. But for the rest of us, sign up!
