Sharing Gates by the Sea -
Walk about 60 yards, around the corner, to the warmest beaches in Santa Cruz, including Sunny Cove and Santa Maria beaches. Play in the sand, boogie board, wander a long stretch of beach, explore the tide pools, and enjoy the sunset. Walk to nearby restaurants. The cottage is located halfway between the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and Capitola Village (two scenic miles each way).
The little beach house...Sharing Gates by the Sea...was once a part of the Victorian resort, the Hotel Villa del Mar, now a retreat center on 19th Avenue. Built in the 1890s, the 580 square foot cottage has personality and charm. The peaked redwood-paneled ceiling makes the living room feel spacious. The cottage sleeps five. There is a queen bed in the bedroom, and a full-size sofa bed in the living room. The private, sun porch room has a twin bed, and could be used as a small, second bedroom. The cozy garden surrounding the house is fully fenced.
We fished, we surfed, we had cigars in the sand, we walked to dinner. We sat on the patio and watched all the good looking humans go by to the tune of the sea. The small kitchen allowed me to prepare a thanksgiving feast and when mom stopped by from Sacramento she loved her little sun porch room and was very cozy. The Tv had all the games on a good channel selection. The hot water rocks. Eight nights and we didn't want to leave!
My wife and I stayed here for a week to wind down and relax. What a wonderful spot. Very close beach access. Quiet location. It was perfect for us. Keep in mind that it's very small, so I would be hesitant to try to house more than 3 or four adults in this cottage.
A beautiful setting and lovely cottage. Relaxing, romantic, quiet ... close to the beach. Really nice place for a get-a-way. Thank you!!
My family is originally from Santa Cruz and over the years I've stayed in many rentals. This cottage is on my list for a return visit. One of the good things include the location. There is a sturdy bench at the end of the street (17th) where one could sit for a long time! (Bring a hat). The other street (20th?) has stairs to another great beach. So many loving dog parents to visit with. A short drive in either direction and you are anywhere you need to be! Walk up to the corner and the Aloha grill has fast food, beer and wine.
The cottage feels roomy enough with windows on all sides. Furniture is comfy though the fold -out bed is not very comfortable . The twin bed and the queen bed are just right. The bathroom is regular sized, not too small.
The weekend we were there was a record breaking 99 degrees so we spent the first afternoon driving around looking to buy a couple fans. I look forward to revisiting when the wood stove could be used. I'm sure it will be very nice.
All in all this is a wonderful place to spend some time very close to the beach in a cozy little historical cottage.
Thank you Jeanne for easy communication. The rental transaction was a breeze!

The cute little beach house was everything we expected... and more! We had stopped by before when others were staying there but didn't understand how cozy and comfortable it was until we stayed there ourselves. The cabin is small, but nothing seemed "tight" and everything is very efficiently laid out. The wonderful high wooden ceiling is probably a big part of why it feels so airy and cozy. We used and loved the fireplace (even though it is mid summer) and enjoyed the cable radio. The house appears to be well maintained and is nicely furnished and decorated. Access was easy and there were no problems.
The beach access is wonderful! On Saturday we walked down to the beach near the Del Mar a couple blocks to the east and found a wonderful uncrowded beach for sunning. On Sunday we walked just a short block to the west and found a smaller, but more stunning, sandy beach with some cliffs and rocks. We enjoyed watching the waves break and splash way up in the air and walking around (carefully) on the rocks to see how they are being warn away by the wave actions. I would like to spend more time here - maybe next time.
We had dinner at the Crow's Nest nearby at the harbor and it was fantastic. The view and ambiance was spectacular, the service perfect and the food delectable.
We definitely recommend this cute beach house to anyone, especially someone who enjoys a place with lots of history and charm. We found a book in the library showing pictures of how the beach has changed by showing pictures from 1800s and early 1900s with a picture taken from nearly the same spot today. You can see the arches that have come and gone plus there were some great pictures of fabulous earlier versions of the boardwalk. We hope to stay at Sharing Gates by the Sea again someday.
Adorable and pristine cottage! Spotless! We really enjoyed how close to the water the cottage is located. We took our coffee and sat on the bench overlooking the ocean. Thank you Jeanne, we will return!

Santa Cruz is known for surfing and its historic Beach-Boardwalk, and there is so much more to do here! Within a half hour drive, visit the redwoods, ride the Roaring Camp train through the mountains, go wine tasting, shop in Capitola or at Santa Cruz's unique downtown area, visit the old Spanish mission, eat at unique restaurants, or take a whale watching trip from the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. Plan a day trip to Carmel and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, 'The City' -- San Francisco -- is two hours north along the coast or through Silicon Valley and the SF bay area. Enjoy exploring!
