'Carroll's Cottage' provides the best of both city and 'Up North' living, creating fond memories for generations of families and friends. Located just 8 miles from Traverse City, you can take advantage of all that Traverse City has to offer: fine or casual dining, an abundance of sporting activities and sightseeing, theater, shopping and events every week of the year. Or, you can stay at the lake, and enjoy the pristine waters of beautiful Long Lake, a large inland lake that warms up for swimming by mid June, and stays warm into the gorgeous fall months, where the leaves offer a kaleidoscope of color. The lake has three large islands for exploring. You can pull your boat onto the shore and bask in the sun or set out on foot to get yet another vista of the spectacular crystal clear waters of Long Lake. Directly across from the cottage, you will find the 'Armour Estate', an historical landmark once owned by the Armour Meat family. Touring the lake, you will see many remnants of the past, including boathouses and beautiful cottages. If you feel adventurous, try your hand at turtle catching...that activity can provide hours of fun and excitement for little ones. Fishing is always a great pastime at the lake. There are bass, walleye, perch and the elusive 50 lb. muskie commonly known as 'Old Scarface' along with many other fish great for fish fries or just catch and release.
When the day winds down, you can sit around the fire pit on the beach, roasting marshmallows, singing camp songs or star gazing. You would be amazed at how clear the night sky is on a soft Northern Michigan night!
Interlochen Center for the Arts is an international music camp located just 5 miles away. They boast a spectacular line up of entertainment most weeks throughout the summer.
The cottage is just 30 miles to the Lakeshore of Lake Michigan where you can enjoy miles and miles of hiking, beaching, boating and swimming. Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes are part of the National Parks System; you can rent canoes and travel down the Platte or Crystal Rivers and end up on Lake Michigan. We are happy to help you plan your vacation as we know the area well!

We are a large family who jointly own the cottage. Purchased in 1948 by Rose and Bob Carroll who owned 3 bakeries in Traverse City, they used the cottage to get away from the city. The family moved out to the cottage every summer for the entire summer and moved back to Traverse City when school started. So you see, many generations of Carroll's and friends have enjoyed the cottage and lake over the years and consider it one of the most important gathering spots for the entire family.
Janet Jannoun purchased this cottage in 1948
Long Lake offers proximity to Traverse City and the surrounding area while also giving you the experience of a true Northern Michigan summer on the lake. We think it is the best of both worlds!
The cottage allows you to kick back and enjoy all the beauty of nature; a retreat in which you slow down and remember what it feels like to truly relax and enjoy life away from our hectic routines. Friend us on Facebook @ Carroll's Cottage
We have been coming to the cottage for 35 years and staying for two weeks each time. There isn't a better, more relaxing place to be in Northern Michigan. We enjoy the cottage and area no matter what the weather is....sunny days are spent at the beach and in the water; rainy or cloudy days, we enjoy the surrounding area...we are never at a loss for something to do. Our children and now our granchildren can't wait for their two weeks at Carroll's Cottage!
My family and I had a great time. Grand kids had great time on beach with paddle boat and row boat. Our family was very comfortable in the cabin. We hope to be considered next year for rental.
The cottage was very comfortable, clean, and cozy. We loved the beach, and the hot-tub in the morning and evening was so relaxing. My son brought up our older dog later in the week and he loved just laying in the front yard and splashing in the water. My elderly mother loved sitting around the camp-fire at night, and the view from the living room while enjoying the ability to watch her favorite shows. We took our jet-ski and enjoyed the lake all day, which didn't seem to have too much traffic on it. From young to old, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The owner Janet, is so friendly and understanding about pets, which made it possible to enjoy our vacation right with our furry, even though we shaved him before we left, loved one. We have rented cottages in the Traverse city area for some time now and I feel that the hospitality I received from Janet was the best. Thanks so much for your accommodations and a great vacation!
We have rented in the Traverse City and Glen Arbor area for years. This was one of the best houses yet! The location is great. Its on a quiet part of the lake but not too far from Interlochen or TC. We kayaked, tubed and fished right outside our door. The house was clean, open and perfect for our larger group of 8. The owner was amazing in answering any questions and accommodating our requests. We will definitely be back!
I stayed with my husband, my two year old and mother for my 30th birthday. The house is in a beautiful scenic area, but close to downtown. The house was very open, inviting and just beautiful with the view of the lake. We fished off the deck and caught something every day! I had an amazing, relaxing and fun time! The owners were available any time I had a question as well, which was so nice. They had a welcome bag with tourist information as well. I plan in making this a yearly vacation now!
We had the best time while staying at the cottage. Everything we needed was right there, which was very nice. Lots of space for our family. Loved the fire pit. We would definitely like to come again.
