Our first--and maybe last--villa rental
We wound up paying for, but not staying, at this villa.
First, the positives.
The kitchen is well stocked with dishes and utensils, and the villa is literally right on the Caribbean. There is room to spread out, and there is a great view from the balcony off the master bedroom. There is room to park, and a remote-controlled gate to let you in and out. Finally, it is close to a gas station, mini-mart and a larger supermarket, although you wouldn’t want to walk there.
Now, the negatives.
There is a steep, narrow spiral staircase to the second floor bedrooms that is dangerous to climb even if you aren't drinking. Carrying luggage upstairs was an issue for us.
There is no air conditioning in the house except for in the bedrooms, and there are no ceiling fans. One of the air conditioning units wasn’t working.
All the beds are singles and on wooden floors, so keeping them together was a problem. Even the master bedroom has two singles pushed together.
The villa is in a run down, busy neighborhood, and there are dogs barking all day and all night.
At night, we were overrun by cockroaches when we walked on the deck next to the pool. And we had to share the upstairs bathroom with at least 3 small lizards.
The "barbeque" in the listing is actually a beat up, broken Hibachi set on the coral beach.
The house pictured is actually two houses, and the garage was converted into a bedroom (that smells musty). Each house has three bedrooms, so our 4th bedroom was in the converted garage away from the main house.
This site doesn’t allow me to post personal info, otherwise I would offer you pictures to support my issues.
Anyway, after pointing out these deficiencies to the real estate agent who represented the owner, all we got was a series of shrugs. Even after we asked him to let us speak with the owner regarding a partial refund, he shrugged his shoulders again and said the owner refused to speak with us. The owner had our money, and their attitudes were literally, “Oh, well.”
Bottom line: If you can see yourself dealing with all these conditions, go for it, I suppose. It is a reasonable price for a seaside villa. For us, it wasn’t worth the danger and unhappiness to stay. So we walked away.
Owner's Response: Our guest arrived at 9 PM it was already dark. We showed them the Villa and they liked it very much. After to show around the guest ( 7 persons, 2 older and 5 young persons above 20 years old.) the older lady told me But we will not take the Villa. I told them that they rented the Villa. She said she doesn't like the staircase. I told them let the young ones take the bedroom on the second floor. She said no, because when they are drinking they can fell down. I was speechless and could not talk anymore. She said we are going to take a hotel. I told her she can take the apartment but she called it a garage. There are two apartements complete with beds and bathrooms. The have never been a garage they are not long enough for a car. She asked me to give her money back, but how can we do that after 2 month contact with them every thing was OK. We put single beds in the villa because some people like to sleep apart and some like to sleep together. This guest slept one night in our Villa and they went to a Hotel. They used the Villa at daytime and slept in a Hotel.
EXTRA; The older lady was in charge of everybody all the others did not speak. Before they accept the Villa they have seen all the pictures also one with the beginning of the staircase. Further they knew that the Villa had two stories.
