Please see Sturgis Rally 2015 weekly rates detailed under the 'Rates' section. We have a 4-adult max during the Rally. We still have July 27 thru Aug. 2 available--great time to enjoy the Rally as well as the Black Hills!

You will love staying at Little Elk Cabin in Scenic Vanocker Canyon. We are about 30 minutes from Rapid City and Deadwood, 5 minutes from Nemo and about 20 minutes south of Sturgis in one of the most beautiful areas in the Black Hills. This spectacular canyon road was FULLY paved from Nemo to Sturgis a few years ago. Our log cabin has one bedroom on the main floor, sofa bed in living room, and two twins in the one-half story loft (please see photos of loft on this page). You can see more detailed information for both of our vacation rentals by searching 'Little Elk Cabin & Cottage' under any search engine. If you hike and love the outdoors, we also have a photo book on our website of the many trails Wolfgang has constructed in the Black Hills.

Our log cabin was originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and has been completely renovated and restored to provide the perfect lodging choice for a family vacation, honeymoon or weekend getaway.

Nearby Dalton Lake is stocked with trout every spring and Little Elk Canyon is perfect for a short hike. Wonderland Cave is within minutes and is an interesting stop for all ages. The picturesque town of Nemo offers horseback riding and the historic Brandin' Iron Cafe. The Friday Night fishfry has become a local favorite. The Nemo area is a gorgeous part of the Black Hills as well as scenic Vanocker Canyon.

No cleaning fees, bookings fees, insurance fees or security deposits required. You pay the nightly rate ONLY plus tax.

Amenities include the following:

We also have a cottage on the east end of our property (on another five acres) that you can find under VRBO listing #167320. Our cabin and cottage are both completely fenced and have metal entrance gates. You can view each one on our website link below where you will find more detailed information as well as more inside photos. We answer every request we receive. About Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt

We have lived in the Black Hills for over 30 years where we have built our own home, our log cabin and new cottage. Wolfgang has built many hiking trails, as well as 16 bridges in the Black Hills, several on the Mickelson Trail as well as Spearfish Canyon.

Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt purchased this cabin in 1987

Why Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt chose Nemo

We fell in love with the Vanocker Canyon area when we moved here from California in the late Seventies. We especially enjoy the small town of Nemo 3 miles to the south of us. We built these two vacation rentals so visitors may share this pretty and historical area with the people who live here.

What makes this cabin unique

Our property is very private and you will enjoy all the wildlife that make this area their home. You will hear the bull elk in the fall and see the turkeys nesting in the tall pines nearby.

You may view our website if you scroll down about 5 lines to 'Links to More Information'. There is a link to our 2nd VRBO listing as well.

Our Wild West getaway=)

  • 5 of 5

Our family rented this absolutely adorable cabin for almost a week. Our daughter (14) slept in the loft and truly loved it. Very clean and sooooo cute, I didn't want to leave. You could not ask for anything better. Wolfgang and Kathleen have thought of everything, (linens, towels, paper towels, garbage bags, coffee filters etc.) and little notes to help you along=). We really wished we had planned to stay longer, maybe next time. We were excited to see turkeys and their babies roaming through. The location of the cabin was centered to everywhere we wanted to go. We did check out the Wonderland Caves, they were awesome. Without a doubt we would stay here again in a heartbeat. Hope to return someday. South Dakota is one of the most beautiful places we've been. Enjoy!!

The place to stay!!

  • 5 of 5

We spent just over a week vacationing in South Dakota. 6 of those nights were spent at Kathleen and Wolfgang's Little Elk Cabin. WOW. This cabin is amazing. It felt like home. It was comfortable, quaint, affordable, private, and had absolutely every comfort we needed from cooking utensils to a washer and dryer. Myself, my husband, and our three children stayed during this visit (ages 10. 7. and 3). The cabin is spacious and accommodated us very easily. Upon arrival Kathleen and Wolfgang walked over to introduce themselves and gave us some wonderful ideas and recommendations of places to visit. They are fantastic. Little Elk Cabin is the place to stay!

so glad we picked this one!

  • 5 of 5

So glad we rented this cabin! It was perfect for my husband and me. It is so charming and peaceful. The owners were very nice to meet and then they left and gave us our total privacy. They thought of everything in this cabin! The property was so beautiful, and smelled so wonderful! (clean air and fresh pine) The location was great, we weren't far from anything we wanted to do, north or south!

We would definitely rent this cabin again.

lovely cabin

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were very pleased to stay at this beautiful cabin in the hills. The cabin is very clean and I wished that I could live in this lovely place. The price was very fair and the owners were nice people. We only briefly met them but I wished that I had asked them to stay for dinner. Wolfgang (owner) has forged many walking trails in the Black Hills, we took trail 76 and were thrilled with the view. The Nemo area is very beautiful, don't hesitate to rent this very comfortable and clean cabin.

Pressure relief

  • 4 of 5

Our four days at the Little Elk cabin was like controlled decompression. Kathleen and Wolfgang were a pleasure to meet (Wolfgang's accent is the perfect match for that great name) and they made us feel welcome and comfortable. Quiet close encounters with wild turkeys were frequent, and the Elk bugle at 8:15am was so close that we wonder that we never caught sight of him. A very pleasant vacation thanks to Kathy and Wolfgang Schmit.
