Gentle Winds is a private community located on the North Shore Road on St. Croix with it's own beach, pool, Beach Shack and tennis courts. Our newly renovated condo has three bedrooms each with a king sized bed, three full baths and built out closets in each bedroom.
We live just outside Washington, DC in Bethesda and have three grown daughters who were raised here. My husband and I met in Vermont and after moving for school and work settled here where we have lived on the same street for 27 years. You could say we love our neighborhood!
Marcia Wagner purchased this condo in 2010
After renting at Gentle Winds for many years we purchased I-8 and did a complete renovation which took a while but it was well worth it. We love to play golf which is what attracted us to the island in the first place and we also enjoy the beach, sailing and hiking.
The setting at Gentle Winds is unique. When you arrive you just exhale because it is so relaxing and beautiful to look at. We chose to be in the I Building because it is closest to the water and has the best views. The beach and the pool are just a stones throw away and the soothing rhythm of the ocean finds you whether you are inside or out.
We've stayed on St Croix many times over the years, but this condo is far and away the most beautiful unit we've been in. Airy, spacious, beautifully appointed and equipped with everything we needed for a wonderful week. Although the power was out island wide for the first day and a half of our stay, we were very comfortable thanks to the owner's contractor who was only a phone call away. The beach shack was delightful, the pool was gorgeous, and what a beach! Thanks, Marcia and Ira, for sharing!
Loved it! Great location, easy access to dive sites and beaches. I will definitely go back!
We just got back from a week's stay at this Gentle Winds property. We are a family of 4 with two active boys ages 9 and 14. We have stayed all over the Caribbean, but this was our first time to St. Croix. Gentle Winds is a condo complex on a large swath of land built back in the 1970's. The views all over the property are wonderful. This unit is beautifully updated with beautiful touches throughout the unit. We are not party people, and I would not recommend this location to anyone who is looking for an active nightlife. The views from the condo on both floors is wonderful. The complex has tennis courts and a basketball court. A reef off the beach offers snorkeling off the beach which we did each day. During our week, we did a 6 mile hike to the Annaly tide pools at the Carambola property, Paddle Boarded at Chenay Beach Hotel, did the Bioluminescant Kayak which is located a block away from Gentle Winds. We would rent this unit again and plan on doing so in the future.
This condo is beautiful! The photos are accurate. The property was clean upon our arrival and very well maintained. The A/C was not functioning when we arrived, but was fixed while we were still there, though we didn't need it with the breeze blowing through. The temps were perfect! I would highly recommend this condo to anyone!! We enjoyed the beach and the beach shack on property. Sheila, who runs the beach shack is smiley and brings a breath of fresh air to the complex. (and makes great food and drink!!) Bobby, the onsite manager of the condo answered all our questions and was so very helpful throughout our stay! We did the seathroughkayak.com bioluminescent tour, full day Tan Tan Tour, sailed with Cpt. Heinz to Buck Island for snorkeling and enjoying this national park preserve, and highly recommend them all!! We were a group of 8 Bunco girls so there was LOTS of laughing, eating, drinking and enjoying the sun and sand of St. Croix. The pleasant accommodations at Gentle Winds made our time on the island perfect!!! THANK YOU to the owners!!!
This home is absolutely perfect. I'm writing this review from the upstairs master bedroom with the most spectacular view of the mountains, the ocean, the sun and the pool. If you are traveling with family or friends, race up the stairs and claim this bedroom!
One item of note, the beds are pillows are top notch and super comfortable. every comfort of home has been thought of - lots of towels, beach bags provided, tons of closet space and a fully equipped kitchen. It's so QUIET here..the beach is secluded and right outside the door. The pictures do not do this home justice. It's immaculate.
If you are renting a car, bring your GPS (a real one) not on your cell phone. The streets and roads aren't marked the same way as in the U.S. Even with a GPS, it can be tricky, especially with driving on the left side of the road. I didn't expect it to get dark at 5pm but hey, it is winter. Drive around during the day to get the lay of the land. There is hardly any night life here but I came with my 3 sisters and our goal was strictly sun and relaxation.
I have a friend who lived here for a few years and she advised that you MUST greet people properly that live here. Say - good morning, good evening, or good night instead of hello or excuse me. Let me tell you, this is critical. People will not be friendly and perceive you as rude. It was strange for us, but it goes a long way. The local people here seem a little quiet and conservative, but with the proper greeting and a smile, they warm up.
I recommend bringing an extra suitcase with snacks and drinks and checking it. Groceries here are very, very expensive. A pack of Oscar Meyer Center Cut Bacon was $12.99. I do think the restaurant prices were inline with other vacation type areas.
This property was a great choice (patting myself on the back). The layout allows for privacy even when traveling with a group. I felt very welcome in this home and plan to return!
Thought we would have beach to play on. Still the sand is clean, the pool area is nice, and the beach is private.
The condo is very well maintained, beautifully decorated, and quiet. The island manager, Bobby, was very accommodating and helpful.
During our stay on St Croix we did a Buck Island tour and had a blast. We went paddle surfing with Freedom City Surf shop where they were attentive and thorough with instructions, plus their equipment was in exceptional condition. One night we did the bio luminescent kayaking in see through kayaks. It was an amazing sight. We weren't overly found of the tour guide as he felt the need to ramble and tell weird jokes but the experience was something to not be missed. We did spend part of a day on the beach at The Buccaneer resort. Clean sand, clear water, and a delicious food stand.
Eat at Cane Bay, seriously up the road from the condo (don't follow GPS directions) is a must eat at location. Excellent food and location.
The condo is in a good central location on the island as it took us about 15-20 minutes to get to most places. The balconies were used as we started our mornings and ended our evenings on them. So relaxing being able to watch the waves and hear the ocean. We were sad to leave this piece of paradise.
(And in no way at all do the pictures do this condo justice. We loved the decorations, the colors, and tile throughout. The most commented on was the texture of the sheets. Bamboo sheets: soft doesn't begin to describe them)
