|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Would you like to roll out of bed and have your toes massaged by the beautiful white sands of Playa de Chelem; or snorkel over a magnificent coral reef just 30 yards off the beach? This exquisite beachfront home is directly on the Emerald Coast.
Our private Mexican resort home has an in-ground pool with a swim-up palapa bar and cascading waterfall, a huge hot tub, custom made gas and charcoal barbeques and a poolside bath house.
The home has two bedrooms and two baths on the first floor and two bedrooms and one large bath with 5 ton hand made limestone tub on the second floor. The house sleeps 12 comfortably. There is a full kitchen with eat at bar, a dining area and a large living room with a full entertainment unit. There is also a huge amount of outdoor living space throughout the compound which is completely walled in for privacy.
Breakfast, lunch or dinner can be found at most of the quaint little restaurants in Chelem or you may want to buy your own fresh local produce and meat at one of the nearby markets and prepare on your own.
Relax on the oceanside deck with your morning coffee and watch the dolphins play and the pelicans dive for their breakfast; swim in the ocean, sun by the pool or walk the beach in search of giant conk shells.
Chelem is the perfect tropical getaway. Not too close to the bustling crowds and cruise ship activity of Progresso, but not very far when you want to go and enjoy on your own terms.
Some of the famous Mayan ruins, such as Chichen Itza and Uxmal are under a 90 minute drive and many lessor known but just as impressive ruins are within 20 minutes of our home. A private tour guide can be provided at an additional cost.
Merida, the capital of Yucatan, is only a 30 minute drive and the city boasts some of the best shopping, museums and restaurants in Mexico as well as wonderful Spanish colonial architecture. It is also the SAFEST state in all of Mexico.
A vacation in the Yucatan gives you a chance to experience the cultures of Mexico and the Mayan world in a truly unique way!

My wife and I currently reside in coastal Massachusetts, and have been the owners and operators of our own HomeCare business since 2001. We spend time at our Chelem home every winter and have many friends and good neighbors in Mexico.
Robert Mullaney purchased this villa in 2008
My wife and I wanted to really experience the local culture. This small fishing village is filled with the happiest, friendliest people on Earth and we fell in love with them!
This is the perfect location. Away from the crowds when you want to be, but close enough to dive into all the local activities when it suits you. Walk off the porch and dive into the warm waters of the Emerald Coast. Relax to your hearts content and then tour the cities of Merida and Progresso, see Mayan ruins and cenotes, take a fishing trip or tour the mangroves to see wildlife and the Flamingo breeding grounds. The possibilities are endless!

Our family, from teens to grandma, came away saying, "Our Purple Pelican Palace & the area was the very best trip we have ever taken." The house was a perfect set-up inside and out. We make much of the gulf/beach on one side and the pool/patio on the other, which gave us quality time together. Chelem provided us contact with hard working, gracious people----baseball games, fresh fish, fruits and vegetables. New Years Eve was a blast-off of specially made figures in front of everyone's homes then open-air mass for the populace. The diving pelicans were fun and we visited the flamingos in the salt flats more than once. Take advantage of the cenotes (sink holes) with swimsuits/water shoes all over the area as well as the sites of Mayan civilization. We visited Uxmal upon the recommendation of our home owner. We ditto his rec. Merida is worth a visit on it's own. We, only, had time for the Sunday Mercado, some shops & food. The Yucatan's food has it's own twists from what you think of as Mexican food. It is very good. Yes, we would visit the area/home again.
The owner and the property manager were so hospitable and welcoming. To take advantage of all the area offers you should have transportation (we didn't try the local). Do take advantage of the guides at the various sites or you won't know what you are seeing. Some of your group having command of Spanish helps too, especially around Chelem.
My family of 8 including 3 children absolutely loved our stay in Chelem. The home was amazing and the sunsets were fantastic. Hopefully we can come back again some day. Shelley helped us immensely with any need. All the good things about the property include the pool, hot tub and bar.
Best advice: take advantage of the contacts for daily transportation for at least half day tours, use the pick up and drop off service for the airport, plan on being off the beautiful grounds, air conditioned, immaculate, amendity rich, spacious home everyday, and pay for the housekeeping cooking service designed around your preferences.
Then relax like you never have before. See sunrises and sunsets that sooth and inspire. Watch in awe as the fisherman pole their way to their nets twice a day, and the pelicans drive for food all day long.
Sit in the hammock on the front deck and see nothing but ocean and birds, walk the beach for miles, do nothing.
Myan history abounds, and Chelem is a preserved fishing village that warrants sighseeing in its own right, but again I would do this with a guide. How else do you really know what the heck you are looking at?
Giant Pelicans in the mangroves across the salt flats that were mined as a commodity long before they were used to salt fish used in the Crusades....
Much greater value than cost. The owners have created a very classy, very exclusive retreat and sanctuary for healing and growth.
We arrived on a Sunday evening, got our car, and took a quick 30 minute ride straight to the house. We were told to make sure to wear our seat belts as the police were really enforcing the law. Wow, they weren't kidding. There was enough police presence that even the biggest worry wort (My Mother) would have felt safe.
Anyhow, enough about the police presence. We pulled off the main road in Chelem onto beautiful white sand road leading to the house. When the gate opened it was like driving into your own private resort. Coconut trees (yes, they are real and coconuts do sometimes fall), a banana tree, hot tub that I'm sure could have seated 15 people, gorgeous pool with a beautiful waterfall, and oh yes... the bar.
We headed straight through the house to the beach even though it was 11:30 at night (we had a late flight) to lapping waves and a prefect moon. After a couple of quick "boat drinks" we headed to bed.
The next morning I woke up early and checked the fridge to see what, if anything, had been left by the last guests. Score!!! Bacon and eggs. I made a quick breakfast for everyone and we headed out for the Mercado in Progreso. As a Chef this was a MUST do for me! I wasn't disappointed at all! Tons of fresh vegetables, meats, poultry, and of course seafood. I'd recommend to the novice that you stay away from the beef simply because it may not be beef. I'm just saying. I picked up a kilo of some of the freshest fish and headed to find some produce. With so many options it was hard not to buy a little of everything, but I stuck to my plan and picked only what we needed for that nights dinner. OK, so I lied... I couldn't resist buying a kilo of cheese.
I just noticed I only have 750 characters left so I'll speed this up.
On Mondays and Wednesdays the tour boats dock in Progresso which makes for a great opportunity to pick up a t-shirt for your nephew back home or whoever you suckered into watching your dog. Great people watching and don't miss stopping at Los Compadres for lunch (everything on the menu is 2 portions).
For the next few days we stayed close to the house and met a wonderful cast of characters (Zoltan the handyman, Alicia (AKA the translator and tour guide, Jorge the grounds keeper and Carmen the wonderful woman that agreed to teach me a few local dishes.
Running out of space... It's not just a beautiful place to relax there were tons of things to do and see in the area. I'm definitely planning to go back ASAP
A quick word to let you know that all of us have really enjoyed our stay in Chelem. My wife and I have rented many properties around the world , and your house is one of the most beautiful property in which we stayed. We have particularly enjoyed the quiet and laid back atmosphere of this part of Yucatan, the kindness of the people as well as the amenities, comfort and beach location of the house. It was a PERFECT setting to celebrate Christmas and New Year with family.
On behalf of all of us, I would also like to commend Zoltan for his availability and responsiveness. His advices and help have certainly been a great factor in the quality of our stay. He is a wonderful and dedicated housekeeper.
This was a truly relaxing and wonderful vacation for all of us, and I will highly recommend this property to my relatives and friends. The home far exceeded our expectations.
Thank you again for allowing us to use your property and for making our stay in Yucatan memorable and pleasurable. We will certainly be back.
I have been to Mexico at least two dozen times & this is BY FAR the most beautiful property I have ever stayed at. The ocean is peaceful enough for anyone. Photos don't do it justice. The pool temperature is just warm enough for comfort & cool enough to refresh. Gardens are gorgeous too. Everything you need is here & in perfect shape. Fit for royalty. Our bed was the most comfy I've ever found in Mexico. I can't think of anything anyone could complain about. I can't even believe we are lucky enough to have found this Purple Pelican House. I am forever spoiled!!!!! Thank you to these owners for making it so pleasurable.
many mayan ruins, museums and cenotes (underground swimming holes) close by within a short drive
