Sunflower Farm is our home. Wendy & Ken love good food and wine, beautiful architecture and gardens, history, theatre, music, interesting people and worldwide travel. We're delighted to be your hosts in Maine and share the insider's secrets we have learned about the area we've called home for 4 decades. Also, Wendy is a Notary Public and thereby authorized to perform marriages by the State of Maine.

Wendy & Ken Schweikert purchased this apartment in 1993

Sunflower Farm is a gorgeous property with a fresh water stream flowing into the Salt Pond, a 4-mile long inlet from the ocean. Sited on a shallow tidal cove bordered by Carleton Island, home to a nesting pair of bald eagles, osprey, blue herons, ducks and seals, it is a Maine paradise. Local Abenaki tribes once used this land as their summer camping grounds.

You'll appreciate use of this exclusive, private estate and the quiet beauty of natural surroundings. Sunflower Farm has 4 acres to explore, filled with gardens, squirrels, birdsong, and several separate outdoor seating areas in sun or shade for enjoying a good book or breathing in the beautiful water views.

A Jewel of a Location

  • 5 of 5
We just loved it- everything! Salt Pond is beautiful - bring binoculars and look for the eagles and warblers and blue heron! The apartment was immaculate with so many special touches - comfortable and colorful. It was thoughtfully decorated. The Blue Hill area is lovely with many places to explore and full of talented artists and artisans. Spectacular Acadia is a short drive away, but it was oh-so-nice to get back to our serene getaway in Blue Hill! Many thanks to Wendy and Ken for sharing offering this opportunity to get to know this area of the coast. They were so responsive to our questions, etc. from the beginning and made our first experience with Home Away a real 5 star plus experience!

Amazing, private getaway!

  • 5 of 5
Everything a couple needs for a relaxing several days or longer in an extremely well-appointed carriage house apartment. We stayed 4 nights between our daughter's wedding in Camden and a another reunion of old friends. The property appears nearly new. The view overlooking the salt pond is sublime. One afternoon, we experienced a several hour rainstorm. But that made our experience even better. The rain beat against the large glass into the evening as we cozied up in our fleeces (we are from S. FL) and enjoyed the relaxing sound of the rain. The carriages is also well located for trips into Blue Hill (visit Rackliffe Pottery!), Deer Isle, the Wooden Boat School and Stonington.

Owner's Response: We're so pleased you mentioned Rackliffe Pottery as its one of our favorites too. There are many fine potters and galleries on the Blue Hill peninsula and Deer Isle. Thanks for choosing the Carriage House, Sonny & Barbara, and giving us a great review.

A Perfect, Peaceful Retreat for Two

  • 5 of 5
We ventured to Maine to visit Acadia National Park and although we knew Blue Hill was about a 45 minute to 1 hour drive away we opted to stay there after reading the reviews and looking at the photos. We were thrilled with our decision. The carriage house is immaculate and bright with a beautiful view. The furnishings were very nice, in perfect condition and all very comfortable. Each morning we went to the Co-op down the road for a great breakfast. The ride to Acadia was beautiful and not a bother at all. Dinner at Aborvine in Blue Hill was sensational. Really just a wonderful experience all around. Our only complaint was that we didn't have several more days to enjoy the property and the area. Ken and Wendy are lovely and exactly what you would hope for in VRBO owners. They are there with any information if you need them, but also happy to give you space and privacy.

Owner's Response: Thanks for choosing The Carriage House, Jenny, and for giving us 5 stars. I'm delighted you mentioned a couple of the excellent restaurants in Blue Hill as there are many to choose from. We enjoyed meeting you both and hope to host you again one day.

Wow, where do we start?!

  • 5 of 5
Anyone looking for a place to stay put or wander around for a week or more in this beautiful area of Maine will enjoy the carriage house! A great space for a couple, or solo traveler. Site photos are good, and how WE decided to come here on our first trip to Maine, but really can't quite capture the beauty from the front porch, windows or deck, inside and outside, overlooking the tidal pond. The view changes by the minute with the full spectrum of sky, landscape and water views front and center! Salt Pond views fill most of the front wall of the upstairs cottage!
This is not a rustic cabin, but a fully stocked comfortable living carriage house, above a separate double garage on the property. Everything except your meals are already there, including most condiments! Microwave, gas stove and oven, dishwasher, blender, coffee maker, blow dryer with attachments - it is all there! Did I mention the wifi and directv with dvr? That is if you can stand to look away from the beauty outside! Be sure to check out the star show after dark!
Ken and Wendy know the area so well and have stocked guides for dining, sightseeing, activities for near and wide - with their personalized notes included,
We were there in mid-May before the weather and season really started, but found lots to see and do. This location is ideal, just off the busy bustle of downtown Blue Hill but close by Castine, Stonington, Brooklin and the Deer Isles--small towns with history, character and lots of artistic talents to explore. There were outstanding views of the essence of Maine at every turn! The blueberry hills were next door to the sunflower farm!
Ken and Wendy are there if you need, interesting hearing about them and their travels, very welcoming, with a basket of Maine goodies upon our arrival! They tend their own grounds, gorgeous grass fields all around and down to the water, a lot of outdoor seating to enjoy the view, all immaculate! Sorry we didn't get a chance to kayak this time, will just have to go back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your rave review, Kelly. It was a pleasure to have you and Jim as guests. Even with less than perfect weather you visited all the scenic, historic towns near and far -- discovering the back roads and hidden gems. We really appreciate your spirit of adventure. Thanks also for your spotless housekeeping. Hope to see you again.

In a word, SUPERB !

  • 5 of 5
The Carriage House at Sunflower Farm is the ideal retreat for two. It is sited perfectly to take advantage of the view of Salt Water Pond which is actually an inlet from the ocean. The cathedral ceiling in the open living area provides a wonderful feeling of spaciousness. The view of the water though the almost all glass end of the apartment is spectacular. All of the furnishings are quality items and in tip top shape and everything was spotless when we arrived. It is apparent that a considerable amount of thought was put into the design and selection of furnishings. The porches off the end of the carriage house are a fantastic touch, and provide a great view of the water as well as the manicured grounds that surround it. There was nothing that we needed or wanted that was not available. Wendy and Ken are the perfect hosts and gave us all the privacy we wanted but were always available to answer any questions we had or provide any information we needed in a genuinely friendly way. They are the perfect couple to rent from. We almost missed the opportunity to rent the carriage house since it was an instant hit their first year renting and filled up fast. We are so pleased that we were able to find a week in early October to rent it. I could go on and on about the carriage house but hopefully this review along with the others provides all the information that is needed about this SUPERB Carriage House! We hope to be able to return to Blue Hill next year and of course to The Carriage House at Sunflower Farm.
