Del Mar is one of the most beautiful, romantic resort beach towns in the world. Here you'll find world class restaurants, activities, including the exciting Del Mar Racetrack and San Diego County Fair, as well as beach and ocean water sports, and nearby San Diego, La Jolla and North County attractions (see listed activities).
Disneyland is just under two hours away, Sea World, the Zoo and Legoland all are within a 30-minute drive without traffic. And Torrey Pines' famous state park for scenic hiking is a ten-minute drive, too.
Del Mar has a colorful history filled with excitement, pleasure and even has a song recorded by Bing Crosby. Bing, Pat O'Brien and their friends, such as Jimmy Durante, turned the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club into one of the most beautiful and prestigious organizations in the entire racing world.
Del Mar is two square miles along the Northern San Diego County coast, best known for its beaches, fairgrounds and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club 'Where the turf meets the surf.'
With beautiful sandstone canyons interspersed with hillsides of custom homes, and astonishing sunsets, the romantic village of Del Mar is a global destination point for visitors, vacationers and residents alike.

We are the McDermott kids.
Our earliest memories are at Del Mar beach running along the shore, and dodging the incoming waves like the sandpipers in the early 60s.
We would drag our inflatable canvas surf mats with rubberized ends into the waves to ride them. This was before surfboards made their appearance in the numbers we see now, yet it was how we learned to read the waves, know where to take off and get the best rides.
The lifeguards seem to have always been there – the red trucks slowly cruising the shore, the towers at 17th & 25th streets, providing a sense of security and safety to us young waterdogs.
This is also where we first tried surfing at 15th St.. It is a passion a few of us have to this day. We've surfed, bodysurfed, fished, skin & scuba dived, sailed, and Zodiaked through the surf. My brother and I even waterskied on surfboards behind our Zodiak in the slough west of the highway by the racetrack. We basically grew up in the waters of Del Mar.
Our parents, Bill and Phyllis, started coming to Del Mar in the '50s from a Los Angeles suburb because their own landlords owned a couple of duplexes - one on 28th and the other on 24th streets. They'd visit for a week each summer. They were hooked! (And so were we!)
Their first purchase was a small house on 23rd St. in 1964 and then another a few years later, then this duplex on 25th St. in 1972. My brother and I added on 2 bedrooms, a bath and 900 square feet while students in 1976 (all through Del Mar's Design Review Board, permit-hell, etc.)
After our Mom passed in 2010, we again updated everything: roof, windows, flooring, carpeting, kitchen, furnishings and paint to make it the home away from home that it is.
The beach, a few minutes from the property, is a romantic place for couples to stroll at sunset or in the morning with their coffee from Starbuck’s or the Poseidon. It is also ideal for vigorous jogging or running, and for many beach sports like volleyball, Frisbee, paddleball, surf-fishing, skim boarding, swimming, body surfing, Boogie boarding, and boardsurfing.
Many of these activities are limited to certain hours or locations based on the season and crowds, but you can almost always find something fun or relaxing to do here.
Finally, it is an excellent place to drag a chair, bring a good book, plug in your iPod (iPhone/iPad, etc!) and enjoy the calming effects of the Pacific waves against the white sands of the beach.
