Del Mar is one of the most beautiful, romantic resort beach towns in the world. About Bruce McDermott

We are the McDermott kids.

Our earliest memories are at Del Mar beach running along the shore, and dodging the incoming waves like the sandpipers in the early 60s.

We would drag our inflatable canvas surf mats with rubberized ends into the waves to ride them. This was before surfboards made their appearance in the numbers we see now, yet it was how we learned to read the waves, know where to take off and get the best rides.

The lifeguards seem to have always been there – the red trucks slowly cruising the shore, the towers at 17th & 25th streets, providing a sense of security and safety to us young waterdogs.

This is also where we first tried surfing at 15th St.. It is a passion a few of us have to this day. We've surfed, bodysurfed, fished, skin & scuba dived, sailed, and Zodiaked through the surf. My brother and I even waterskied on surfboards behind our Zodiak in the slough west of the highway by the racetrack. We basically grew up in the waters of Del Mar.

Bruce McDermott purchased this house in 1972

Why Bruce McDermott chose Del Mar

Our parents, Bill and Phyllis, started coming to Del Mar in the '50s from a Los Angeles suburb because their own landlords owned a couple of duplexes - one on 28th and the other on 24th streets. They'd visit for a week each summer. They were hooked! (And so were we!)

Their first purchase was a small house on 23rd St. in 1964 and then another a few years later, then this duplex on 25th St. in 1972. My brother and I added on 2 bedrooms, a bath and 900 square feet while students in 1976 (all through Del Mar's Design Review Board, permit-hell, etc.)

After our Mom passed in 2010, we again updated everything: roof, windows, flooring, carpeting, kitchen, furnishings and paint to make it the home away from home that it is.

What makes this house unique

The beach, a few minutes from the property, is a romantic place for couples to stroll at sunset or in the morning with their coffee from Starbuck’s or the Poseidon. It is also ideal for vigorous jogging or running, and for many beach sports like volleyball, Frisbee, paddleball, surf-fishing, skim boarding, swimming, body surfing, Boogie boarding, and boardsurfing.

Many of these activities are limited to certain hours or locations based on the season and crowds, but you can almost always find something fun or relaxing to do here.

Finally, it is an excellent place to drag a chair, bring a good book, plug in your iPod (iPhone/iPad, etc!) and enjoy the calming effects of the Pacific waves against the white sands of the beach.

Our Home Away from Home!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 3rd year returning to the 25th Street Beach House or "Our Beach House" as our kids call it! We just love this home and the family who manage it. We are two families with sleep deprived physician parents & 5 kids ranging this year from 4.5 y to 10 years old (we started coming to the Beach House when they were 2.5-7 years old). There is always lots of energy, cooking, kids running amuck wherever we go and the Beach House is always a very comfortable, quiet & accommodating place which tailors to everyone's needs!

1) The House: Incredibly well kept and stocked. Kitchen with all starter spices, gadgets, small appliances, serving plates etc for over 10 people. No detail left unaddressed. Open floor plan is very spacious and welcoming for gatherings. Gas grill outside & lots of outdoor seating for hanging out, making smore's in the firepit, enjoying the warm weather. We make pizza on the grill this year for 15 people and it was really great! I'm a "foodie" and love to cook/entertain. This house/kitchen is great. Never felt crowded. Bedrooms & bathrooms very comfortable & tastefully updated. W/D in garage.

2) Location, location, location!!!! Just one block from the beach w/ life guard tower, potties and an outdoor rinsing shower for sandy feet. The house is stocked with ample beach towels, boogie boards, sand toys, beach chairs and a cart to carry it all. Fabulous! Kids went to the beach everyday! We've stayed at another location on the other side of the highway & found that it was difficult to get to the beach because of traffic (it's a popular place on weekends), parking, & hauling EVERYTHING. The house is also walking distance from the Del Mar Village where we would stroll for coffee & breakfast, shop, moms got to go for a spa morning at the acclaimed L'Auberge Hotel & parents even got to go out for date night with dinner at Jakes! 15 min from LEGOLAND, 20-30 min from SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, Old Town, Embarcadero, the airport. Trader Joes and Costco about 10-15 min away. Went to the lovely San Diego Botanical Garden which has an amazing children's garden/tree house, the Exotic Bird Sanctuary (just behind the race track! A hidden gem for kids!), Meditation Garden in Encinatas (spectacular view of the ocean for sunsets & kids thoroughly enjoyed the huge koi pond), surfing lessons @ Rusty's in Del Mar, road the Coaster to the downtown Children's Museum, Old Town for amazing Mexican food, USS Midway...can't wait to go back next year!

Well Appointed, Clean and Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Beach House on 25th with a reunion of eight good friends and had a lovely comfortable, visit. The house is spotless and spacious. The linens and towels are all high quality and the furniture invites you to take a nap or curl up with a good book.

I am a professional chef and was looking forward to cooking for my friends with the amazing produce and seafood offered in San Diego. I was pleasantly surprised to find every appliance and kitchen utensil I needed in the newly renovated kitchen.

I will be back to the Beach House on my next visit to Del Mar!

Stress-free Rental

  • 5 of 5

Over the years, we have rented several homes in Del Mar and by far, this is the best rental. The location in the Beach Colony cannot be beat...just a short walk to the beach. The house has a lot of room and was a perfect set up for me, my husband, and 5 teenagers. The house is equipped with everything you need for the beach (about 10 chairs, 3 umbrellas, beach towels, a cart to carry the stuff to the beach, coolers, boogie boards, a surf board and even a stand up paddle board!). The indoor and outdoor dining areas are very roomy, there are TVs all over, and the kitchen is stocked with a lot of "necessities". The property manager lives right next door and is extremely helpful. The house location is also conducive to walking into town. All-in-all, a wonderful place to stay and we will return!

Our July 2014 stay

We have never felt more at home away from home anywhere else. 2 minute walk to beach. Could not have been better location. The legacy of family and love in this house was felt and respected. Thank you McDermott family.

The Perfect Place!

  • 5 of 5

This is the vacation rental property you've always dreamed about! Beautifully decorated (believe it or not, even better than in photos!), with a fantastic layout: 2 BR upstairs and 2 BR downstairs, with very spacious and open common areas. Everything was impeccable, and you couldn't want for more. The property states "sleeps 10", but you could fit a few more in sleeping bags; there's plenty of floor space.

We've rented over a dozen vacation properties in different parts of the world, and this has been our favorite. It's so nice to go to a place that feels like home: it was fully loaded with kitchen appliances, spices and the crucial "basics" (unlike in many rental properties, there is NO need to run out to the grocery store for salt or napkins or toilet paper; the owners have thought of EVERYTHING), as well as the technological amenities (big HDTV, wifi, televisions in every room, if you want them) that make a trip so comfortable. To top it off, there was a washer and dryer, and everything you could need for a day at the beach (towels, boards, lunge chairs, buckets and toys) as well as a super cool cart to transport it all hassle free.

The house is situated on a quiet street, with plenty of parking, double paned windows (you almost don't hear the trains go by, despite their proximity), and it's a stone's throw from the ocean. The Del Mar Plaza, as well as quite a variety of restaurants and cafés, are walking distance from the house. And if you're up for a day at the spa, a haircut or manicure, you could also get there on foot.

If you've never been to Del Mar, it's a must! Paradise on the ocean because it's quiet enough to be 100% tranquil (NOTHING at all like those crowded beach towns that have no parking, traffic at all hours, fastfood joints, etc.), with plenty to do within walking distance, and almost everything imaginable to do within an hour's drive (Sea World, the Zoo, Old Town, Legoland, Balboa Park, Premium Outlet, the list goes on and on....)

The family that owns the place, . . . you could not ask for people to be warmer or more hospitable; they's kind, professional, cordial. And the neighbor Tracy, who lives in the adjoining unit, is always there to answer questions, lend you some sugar, and she does it with patience and a smile.

To sum it up, I would have moved in if they'd let me! My guess: when you go, you'll be like me and you'll NEVER want to leave.

Enjoyed it even better the second year in a row!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year staying at the 25th street beach house. It really is a GREAT house!

The owners have done a wonderful job making sure their guests are completely comfortable and the experience is hassle free from start to finish.

The house is beautifully remodeled and really feels like stepping into a home. The beds are very comfortable, it is very quiet despite a working railroad being just a few houses down, the kitchen is very well stocked with starter spices, cooking utensils, pans, storage containers....really everything! It has an open floor plan, so many people can spread out and not feel compressed....we made pizza on the grill this time and served 15 people (7 adults/8 children) and it didn't feel crowded at all. This year our children were a little older (3.5 y & 5 y) and so we broke out the boogie boards, which the house supplies, and spent more time on the beach which is just a block away (and has a life guard stand with potties). Del Mar Village is just a 10-15 min walk away and was great for morning bagels & coffee. We had a great dinners in the Village there as well. The Powerhouse Park is great for kids too with a playground, nice beach & community center.

The house is a duplex shared by their on-site manager who is just lovely. She meets you at the door with a smile, walks you through the house and shows you where everything is and how everything works, and is always available, if not just by going next door, then by cell. Washer & dryer are on site which you share with on-site manager, but for as many loads as we did having our kids, we never seemed to overlap usage times. There is ample parking in their driveway....for probably 3 guest cars? The street is quaint with several families with children.

LEGOLAND, SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park are all about 30 min away. We took the Coaster (the local train) from the Solana Beach Station (just 1 mile away) this time into Downtown and toured the USS Midway and walked over then to the new Children's Museum. You can also take it into the Gas lamp District or Old Town as well. Next year we will take the Amtrak up to Disneyland for the day I think. Really! This house is the BEST for location, comfort and relaxation.

We really enjoyed our stay! We'll definitely be back next year again.
