This turn of the century mansion is located on the square in historic Chickamauga, Georgia. Chickamauga is a charming and historic small town that has this property at its root. We are located just a 20 minute drive from scenic Chattanooga. From our front door you have the convenience of walking down the tree-lined drive into our wonderful small town, full of antique and gift shops and restaurants. Also, in five minutes you can become immersed in the beauty of Chickamauga Battlefield. A short drive into Chattanooga affords you all that this renaissance city has to offer including the Tennessee Aquarium and the riverfront areas.
Our Greek Revival home, built in 1912, is surrounded by four and a half acres of manicured grounds featuring flowering cherry, tulip, magnolia and dogwood trees with beautiful centuries-old oaks and hardwoods. You can rest on the front porch or walk around the grounds, relaxing in the sitting areas mingled amongst the grounds. Six additional wooded acres in the back of the property offer privacy and seclusion.
Coming up to the front of the house, you'll step up to the rocking chair porch and step back into time through the elegant foyer with nine foot tall pocket doors. Eleven foot ceilings and three-part Palladian windows stretch throughout the house. Antique mantles, Venetian chandeliers and beautiful decor and furnishings are all part of the timeless charm of this property.
The D.A. Jewell House is a wonderful place for a weekend getaway, vacation or family reunion. This property can serve many needs and provide space to make wonderful memories. There is a sunroom upstairs and downstairs, a library and four separate TV viewing areas (one is in the pool house). There are two media rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs, offering HD television and blu-ray disc.
The pool and pool house are great sources of fun in the summertime. The pool house has a fully equipped kitchen, furnishings, TV and a bar with marble countertop. This is a family owned property - well loved and well maintained. It has had only two owners and our mom passed it down to us. The house is full of places for gathering together and having time alone. The grounds are like your own spacious park. And the pool and pool house provide wonderful space for having memorable fun, entertainment and rest. Close to all the wonderful amenities of Chattanooga we have the best of both worlds. The town is welcoming and a great place for families. The natural spring across the street is a wonderful place for relaxing and feeding the ducks and geese. Bicycling and walking are daily activities on our well maintained streets and sidewalks.
The D.A. Jewell House was built in 1912. You can sit on the huge rocking chair front porch, relax in the library, have meals in the beautiful dining room or by the pool. The house falls naturally into four suites and the 6 bedrooms and baths provide ample room for families to gather, friends to get away together, or for retreats. There aren't many places where 16 people can stay together and comfortably enjoy individual and group space.
My Dad grew up in Chickamauga and my two aunts worked at the local dentist office across the street from the D.A. Jewell House. As a little girl, I often wondered what the inside of the beautiful mansion looked liked.
Our daughter was married recently at a church in Chickamauga (the churches are beautiful as well!) and we were so thankful to be able to have the reception at the mansion as well as have our out of town guest and some of the wedding party stay there. It is even more beautiful than the pictures show. It has so much charm from years gone by but has all the convenience of modern day. Our guest all commented on how comfortable the beds were and how much they enjoyed their stay. The suites were perfect for our guest as they are arranged in separate areas with privacy and entertainment rooms, yet everyone was in the same house. We rented a tent for the reception and set it up on the side yard near the beautiful English garden. Artie and Susan, the owners were so helpful answering our questions. It was a pleasure working with them! The town of Chickamauga is so fun with the antique stores and various shops and it is so convenient to all the Chattanooga-Chickamauga attractions in the area. Chickamauga is a very special place to us and the house was the perfect setting for an important day in our lives. Our daughter commented on how the weekend was all she had ever dreamed of for her wedding. The Jewell House played a huge part in making the weekend so special. And I was finally able to see the inside of that gorgeous house!
We rented stayed at this beautiful property for my mother's 80th birthday. My mother was totally blown away by the lovely accommodations. There were 14 of us attending the event. There were plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate everyone. The house and grounds are beautiful. As another reviewer pointed out, the pool and pool house make a wonderful day time gathering place for everyone. There was plenty of parking and more than enough places for the kids to explore. Downtown is just across the street several quaint stores to wander through when a little break from the pool was needed. One last item, the owners were fantastic to work with. Very accommodating. Definitely will keep this on our list to stay again!!
We stayed at the D. A. Jewell Home in June 2013 to celebrate my 60th Birthday. My husband, our 3 children and their spouses and our 6 grandchildren (ages 10 months to 7 years old last year) enjoyed the property so much we begged my husband to return for my 61st birthday, which we did in June. The home is perfect for a multi-family vacation as each family has separate areas to relax, sleep or just get away from each other for a bit. The inside is truly a "jewel" - we love the architecture and furnishing throughout. The listing description and pictures and great but to see it in person is amazing. We started each morning on the front porch with our coffee and ended each day back on the porch with coffee, refreshments...watching the grandkids run around the yard catching fire flies...they had a ball! Our family loves to relax and swim on vacation so most of our daytime hours are spent at the pool. The pool house, which is very large, was our gathering place for lunch and dinner as well. Both the main house kitchen and pool house kitchen are well equipped so anything you might need for food preparation is supplied. There are also two kitchens on the second floor, which our son-in-law took advantage of...he loves to have a late-night snack! The guys loved the "man-cave", which they dubbed it, on the second floor at night after all the kids were in bed; watched the giant flat-screen, had refreshments and snacks and relaxed.
Last year we visited the Chickamauga Battlegrounds, the Chattanooga Aquarium and Zoo. This year we made return trips to the Aquarium and the Zoo (with little children this is a must!). But mostly we enjoyed the pool, the beautiful grounds and the town (super friendly throughout). We never ate out (I love to cook) so I can't recommend restaurants but some of our family visited the new cupcake bakery/ice cream parlor in town, which is only a block away, and enjoyed it very much . Our family would love to make this an annual vacation trip...already working on strong-arming my husband into making a reservation for June 2015!
Repeat visitors to this wonderful home. We love all of it from the rockers on the porch to the many bedrooms and kitchens and bathrooms. Lovely little town is right there. Everything was in great shape, plenty of plates, silverware, linens are great, and plenty of chairs, a nice large dining room table that we could all squeeze around. We could not ask for a better house! Hiking, shopping, Chattanooga, so much nearby.
My coworkers and I like to explore the local areas when we have our annual sales meetings and thought checking out the area close by Chattanooga would be a good plan for this year! The house was amazing, we were all so excited and felt very comfortable; awesome all around. Great sleep - mattresses were comfy, clean, clean clean! Each of us had a separate bathroom/bedroom. Great little town, close enough to shop and explore Chattanooga but also quaint little shops right on the corner from the home! We loved it and could see this being a great place for any get together or special occasion or to just hang out with some friends! Loved the character and history of the home; I just cannot say enough about it!
