Great view, but....
We were really hopeful about this property, but left a little disappointed. I think most of that disappointment came from what was portrayed versus reality. This property is not your own rental home, but rather a pleasant basement property with detached garage made into a room. This property contains a small room (bedroom) next to the car port with a detached "rec/kitchenette/bedroom" The recroom is a garaged turned room. The bedroom itself is cosy & comfortable, decorated simply, clean & quiet, the bathroom is spacious. (feels like a small hotel room) The only downside is because it is next to the carport every morning before 8am you will hear the owner leaving in her car. The rec room has good kitchen equipment- toaster, coffee pot, ect. The sink to the kitchenette is in another room off of both rooms. We really enjoyed the pool when we were able to swim in it though it was dirty w/tree debris 2 days of our stay (have photos). The beach is a lovely 5 min walk, but the driveway is very very steep. The view was our favorite part, and it was lovely waking up to the mokes and view. We have to give this property a fair rating because of the owner. Before we came, we asked the owner permission over the phone if we could have two friends stay with us as well. She said that would be fine, but later in another phone call she said she didn't remember the conversation. She sent us an email, saying that she doesn't usually allow two extra people, but would make the exception and there would be an extra fee. (which we have documented in an email) Once we arrived she gave us an invoice saying that it would actually be more per night then she agreed to. We felt that was unreasonable since she had agreed to an amount prior to our arrival, so we had to take time out of our vacation to go over this with her. We negotiated with her and still paid extra per a night for our friends (more then agreed upon). One of our friends was sleeping on floor cushions in the rec room. We also were only there but to sleep and spent the entire day exploring hawaii. We were really disappointed by this, and tried to not allow it to take away from our vacation in Hawaii, but felt it took away from our experience. My suggestions if you were to stay here is to make sure you do everything by email, so you have a documentation, but even then be wary to what you agree on with the owner. We appreciate the owner allowing us to stay in her home
Owner's Response: I knew something was up when this renter refused to email and always insisted on calling me on the phone weekly before his stay with various new requests.
He requested to pay by cash upon arrival instead of paying in advance by credit card. I prefer to have everything settled beforehand to avoid misunderstandings, but I accommodated him against my better judgment.
He mentioned on the phone that his friends might stop by to visit and then called again a week before arrival saying his friends were expecting to sleep in the garage/rec room. I reminded him only 3 adults are allowed and I would never have agreed to another couple and explained that the extra bed is a single, but he said they didn’t mind sleeping on the floor. I bent my rules to accommodate him again.
When he signed the agreement he listed himself and his wife. When I mentioned I hadn’t received the second page of the agreement, which was the rules and liability waiver, he claimed he didn’t see it and requested to sign it when he arrived because he didn’t have a printer handy. It specifically states no more than the people on the contract are allowed to stay….and various other things that he pretended not to know about such as the price of an extra person per night, quiet hours, and steep driveway.
To be clear, the bedroom is on the bottom floor of my house and is not a basement. My website has clear pictures of everything.
During the monthly yard maintenance, some grass invariably gets in the pool, and in a day the pool skimmer naturally clears it off. Instead of telling me it bothered them or removing it with the catch basket nearby, my renter took pictures.
This attitude is very disturbing to me. This is my home, not a hotel, and I do everything in my power to make my guests comfortable here. If there ever is a complaint I attend to it immediately, and my motto is to pay it forward. If someone has the attitude of this guest, they should stay in a hotel.
