Sweet country retreat

Laughing Brook cottage is a bright, airy, cozy, colorful, clean and comfortable retreat on a beautiful property in rural North Carolina. I wanted to live there!
I was a little worried when we booked “Laughing Brook Cottage at West Wind” because the name was so poetic I figured no place could live up to that sort of billing and there seemed to be a lot of rules, such as absolutely no children, maintaining a temperature of 68-degrees while there and turning off the heat (or air-conditioning) entirely while not, plus walking and hiking only on the cottage side of the property. But these rules just formed the basis for what turned out to be a very positive experience. Owners Lynn and Greg communicated what they wanted clearly and were in turn very hospitable and accommodating. For instance, we arrived on an unseasonably cold April day when it was raining and hailing and I emailed ahead asking if Greg could turn on the heat an hour before we got there, which he did. We stayed there while we visited a relative in an assisted living facility in Greensboro and the cottage is convenient to Greensboro. It took us only 20 minutes to get there and we could use back roads and didn’t have to get on the interstate.
There were two small, pretty bedrooms, each with comfortable double beds and two large, modern bathrooms. Each bedroom was adjacent to or near a little porch with bird feeders to watch. The bathrooms were large and modern. There were lots of windows, bright wooden floors, a wonderful round wooden dining table, lovely dishes and a Jenaire stove. I love the memory of watching my husband stand at the french doors, sipping tea looking out at the woods. It was so much better than a hotel room could ever be,
We ate dinner out at one of the recommended restaurants in Kernesville and it was just as good as the owners said it would be, with a terrific wine list. Kernesville is a very small town and the cottage is a (scenic) drive from there with a lot of turns so you have to be careful not to get lost. But if you want to be out in the country, you will be very happy with this sweet retreat.
