Overview

Pahoa House Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom,1 Bathroom, 2 Sleeps. Huge Lanai With Ocean View

Charming oceanview farmhouse, off the grid getaway.

Located at the end of a private road, our Pohoiki farmhouse (pronounced locally as Po-iki) is a tastefully appointed, off the grid home with a lovely ocean view. The home sits on five cleared acres and is planted with a variety of tropical flowers, exotic fruit trees, and even a testbed for growing tea. This is an off the grid retreat for visitors looking for serenity and a soothing, entirely different sort of Hawai'i vacation.

The house features a full kitchen; separate bedroom; large bathroom with walk-in shower and hand-crafted acacia wood counter; cozy living room with TV/DVD player; a dining room that comfortably seats four to six; and a large lanai featuring ocean views during the day and sublime stargazing at night.

This is our home, and although work keeps us away from Hawai'i right now we’d like it to be your home as well. Sit on the lanai in the morning sipping coffee and eating papaya from one of the local markets while listening to the slow distant rumble of the ocean. Easily visit the many nearby wonders of Puna: Ahalanui Park warm pond, Pohoiki boat ramp, the Vacationland tide pools, the Kalapana lava flow, Pahoa Town, mystical Red Road...Wander the yard at sunset with a glass of wine while the sun paints the skies over Puna pink. Fall asleep to the nighttime rains…

Because the house is positioned on a hill 400 feet above sea level, the trade winds blow regularly and keep it almost exclusively mosquito-free, which is a bit of a marvel for east Hawai'i.

We are less than 10 minutes by car from old Pahoa Town (restaurants, gas, groceries, wonderful olympic-sized swimming pool) and a mere few miles from the Pohoiki boat ramp and the geothermally heated warm pond. Kalapana is 20 minutes south; the Hilo airport about 35 to 40 minutes north; Kilauea crater about 45 minutes. The location is ideal for exploring the eastern side of the island.

Sometimes it’s difficult to remember that our farmhouse is off the grid, but it is. We have plenty of county water, which is easily and quickly heated by an on-demand propane water heater. The stove and oven are propane as well, and the electrical is solar. The living is convenient and comfortable, however the experience is decidedly more detached – much less energy consumptive, much less plugged-in. Life on Pohoiki Road is in synch with the rhythms of the day. Life is simpler here.

Why Jeffrey Hannan chose Pahoa

We tell everyone that Lower Puna, the coastal region of easternmost Hawaii, is not the Hawaii of your dreams, it's the Hawaii of the dreams you never knew you had. Pohoiki Road is one of the most scenic and laid back roads on the Big Island. Our place at the end of a private lane off of Pohoiki Road is a serene getaway where the rhythms of the day are guided by the elements -- sun, rain, wind, sky... It's our respite from all the things that drive us crazy on the mainland. It's Hawaii the way Hawaii is meant to be (in our view).

Very happy with the property.

  • 5 of 5
The property was exactly as described with everything in good condition. The bed is comfortable, the furnishings solid, comfortable, and lovely. The solid teak furniture on the lanai made for comfortable outdoor naps. Mornings were perfect with the 2 wicker chairs on the deck (lanai) just outside the bedroom for the perfect place to greet the day as you watch the sun rise. I was worried that the bugs might be a problem and that the lack of "regular" power might be an issue. Neither proved to be the case. For whatever reason, we had a few bug bites the first night but that was it, even when we spent our evenings lying out on the lanai gazing at the galaxies - definitely one of the highlights of this location. Because there is a back up power generator, there is no lack of power, though I don't think it even came on very much.
Upon arrival there were beautiful floral arrangements in both the kitchen and the bathroom. Everything was wonderfully clean except the french press coffee maker which had not been emptied. This was clearly an over site but was not representative of how we found everything else. There were plenty of towels, a handy clothes horse as well as a clothes line. There are games and candles and the owners even thoughtfully provide flashlights and an umbrella.

The location is perfect for exploring the Hilo side of the island, it is about 10 minutes from Pahoa for groceries (expensive) and gas (cheap). The farmers market in Hilo is fantastic with all manner of fruits and vegetables, many organic and more importantly, at the best prices we encountered on the island. The warm pool, located a couple of miles away on Red Road (HWY 137) is the perfect way to start the day - it opens at 7:00 am. Walking, running or driving the Red Road to where it dead ends in Kalapano is an absolutely gorgeous path. The snorkeling ponds are also close by and Volcano National Park and Hilo are both less than 45 minutes from the house. The Waimea Valley is about an hour and a half from the house and definitely worth the drive.
The quiet and privacy, while still being easily accessible are what sets this property apart, as is the charm of the house itself.
The owners, Jeff and Arvin provided helpful information and promptly returned our damage deposit.
About the only suggestions I would make would be to add a dresser to the bedroom and provide a Melita coffee filter for those who want pour- over coffee. Thanks for a great stay! Janiese & David

Owner's Response: Aloha Janiese and David - We're delighted you enjoyed the property and were able to enjoy the sublime and lovely qualities of lower Puna. Thanks so much for the suggestions: last time we were on island we scoured east Hawaii for a simple drip coffee maker (non-electric) to no avail. (They're so much easier to clean than a french press, so I'm with you on that. We did find one on the mainland and will bring it over.) We'll definitely consider a dresser for the bedroom as well. We don't wear much when we're there, and everything tends to fit easily in the closet, but for travelers a little drawer space would be helpful. Thanks again. Aloha nui loa! -- jeff + arvin

Wonderful, quiet place to stay

  • 5 of 5
I enjoyed my stay - great view out over the island to the ocean, very comfortable, and peaceful. Beautiful grounds. I appreciated the opportunity to recycle and contribute to the compost pile. My only need was a bit more light to read at night which required rearranging the lamps a bit. I liked the proximity to Pahoa and its great organic food store, to Lava Tree State Park, and access to the beaches to the south and to Volcano National Park.

Owner's Response: Aloha, and thank you so much for the feedback. Usually by the time the sun goes down we're ready to collapse into bed. Bless you for reading, though (jeff is a writer), so we'll 'test drive' the nighttime lighting and see if we can amp it up a bit in all the right places. Mahalo!

Just perfect

Wow!!

This place is a paradise! Quiet, peaceful and surrounded by amazing vegetation. There is also a wonderful road for biking (or running) along the ocean (2 miles from the house). So, beautiful! We did it almost everyday!

The location is not too touristic. People we met were mostly locals so we really "felt" what it is to live in Big Island.

We really enjoy our stay!
