In Rouen, guests of Normandy holiday rentals can explore the well-preserved medieval and Renaissance sections of town and visit the Place du Vieux-Marche, the town square where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. Rouen is home to a number of fabulous churches, including the Cathedrale Notre-Dame, the 14th century St-Ouen, and St-Godard. Top museums include the Musee de Antiquties and the Musee des Beaux-Arts.
Calvados is an agricultural region known for its cheese, cider and the apple brandy known as Calvados. The chic coastal resorts of Trouville and Deauville lie off the Cote Fleurie, while Cote de Nacre Luc-sur-Mer and Courseulles-sur-Mer are less expensive alternatives for Normandy holiday rentals. The port city of Caen was mostly destroyed during World War II, but the Abbaye aux Dames and Abbaye aux Hommes, founded by William the Conqueror and his wife Mathilda, were spared.
Normandy is perhaps best known as the site of the 1944 D-Day invasion, and guests of Normandy holiday rentals can visit a number of sights commemorating D-Day. Off the beach of Arromanches-les-Bains are the remains of the enormous prefabricated port that was tugged across the English Channel to facilitate the troop landing. The Manche region, surrounded on three sides by the English Channel, is home to one of France's most visited sights, the magnificent island abbey of Mont-St-Michel, which is still inhabited by Benedictine monks. Other highlights of the region for guests of Normandy holiday rentals include the historic town of Coutances, and Granville, which features a museum about Christian Dior, the famous fashion designer who was raised here.
