VILLA HOLIDAY APARTMENT ORVIETO UMBRIA CLOSE TO ROME. VIEWS OF LAKE BOLSENA

Orvieto Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Holiday heaven In the heart of Italy. Easy reach from Rome

This is a dream location in the heart of Italy, on the borders of Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio, near Orvieto, and in easy reach of Rome, Florence, Siena , Assisi.

The villa has been renovated to a high standard using traditional material and is furnished with antiques and hand made pieces, however the apartment is very functional and has everything you may need to enjoy a luxurious and comfortable holiday, including WiFi internet. The first floor apartment is totally independent and set in large grounds where you can relax and unwind. The apartment has stunning views from every window, with Lake Bolsena to the front. It is very spacious (130 mts - 2 bathrooms) and offers the ideal situation for a romantic week away from it all, but is large enough for two couples sharing a holiday or for a family wanting to introduce their children to nature, history, culture, good food and fantastic hours spent on the shores of Lake Bolsena.

Notes on the Villa: The villa is set well away from other dwellings, but is only two to three miles from Bagnoregio, which has traditional shops and a small supermarket that will see to all your self catering needs. A thriving market is also held on Mondays.

The villa is set in an acre and a quarter of land on a ridge overlooking lake Bolsena and is surrounded by peaceful and tranquil Umbrian farmland that is often grazed by flocks of sheep. There is a graveled drive to the

villa and extensive graveled and grassed areas where old oak trees provide welcoming shade for sitting and relaxing.

The original farmhouse has been extended and renovated using local, traditional and sympathetic materials such as basalt stone, terracotta tiles, chestnut beams and doors. The ground floor can also be rented on its own or together with the top floor if you want the sole use of the villa.

Notes on the Apartment: Access is made by way of an external stone stairway and through a porch (small loggia).

This spacious (130 square meters) accommodation comprises of:

- Two double bedrooms with wardrobes and lake views.

- Two large bathrooms with a WC, bidet, basin and shower in each and a washing machine in the largest one.

- Lounge with open fireplace, television, video and DVD. The sofa can be transformed into a double bed.

- Farmhouse kitchen / dining room with the use of a large fridge freezer, gas cooker (five rings and two ovens), microwave oven, electric kettle, dishwasher and a full complement of kitchen utensils, ideal for holiday rental and self-catering.

- Large corridors and hallways which add a sense of space to the whole apartment and offer a quiet space to sit and enjoy the wonderful views.

- Covered terrace (large loggia), spacious enough to eat 'al fresco'. The loggia offers stunning views of the lake and of unforgettable sunsets.

- Full central heating

Local places to visit: CIvita Di Bagnoregio: 3 miles. This ancient hilltop village dates back to the Etruscans and is connected to Bagnoregio by a footbridge. Bagnoregio looks down on the magnificent Val Dei Calanchi with its dramatic eroded tufo peaks.

Bolsena: 5 miles. Ancient town, the Etruscan Volsinii, that still retains its medieval narrow streets leading up to the castle. The town has magnificent lake front gardens and several restaurants where it is possible to eat 'al fresco' on the lake shore. The local cuisine is unforgettable and the wines are probably amongst the best in Italy. Eating out is very reasonable.

Orvieto: 10 miles. Hilltop town dug into the tufo rock. Magnificent cathedral, covered in golden mosaics and carvings that make it shine from the distance in the sunset.

Montefiascone: 5 miles. Medieval hilltop town, that was for centuries the summer residence of the Popes because of its favorable climate. Cobbled medieval streets lead to the Rocca Dei Papi and its fantastic views.

We have bought the villa about ten years ago when it was in a total state of disrepair. At times it has been a struggle to get it completed and a battle against the Italian red tape, but we have done it and the journey has made us grow and find many new friends on the way. We hope to be able to retire there one day and in the interim we love to share this little bit of paradise with our guests.

At times our holiday will coincide with the Guests' holiday and we'll be available to provide information and support when requested. Other times we will be in the UK and the Guests will have the site for themselves.

Giulia Stevens purchased this apartment in 2000

It's a wondrous place of intense beauty, peace and tranquillity. Please contact us and I will send you lots of photos.

Our 3rd visit to this beautiful house

  • 5 of 5
We visited La Porcilaia twice before in 2006 and 2010. We loved it so much we had to come again! You have the whole of the top floor of the house which is reached by the stairway shown on the picture. It has been fitted out to a very high standard and furnished tastefully to produce the rustic Italian feel but with all the mod cons you need. Our favourite part of the house is the Loggia where we enjoyed having breakfast and watching the sun set over Lake Bolsena in the evening. It is ideally situated for visiting the nearby lake which is good for swimming and also many interesting towns around. Giulia and Malcolm have lots of useful tips of places to visit nearby and restaurants. Our favourite town is Orvieto which is the nearest big town. We would also recommend a trip to Villa Lante and Parc de Mostri.

Absolutely Fantastic

What a perfect beginning to our four week trip to Europe. We were thrilled by our one week stay in this beautiful villa in Umbria. We wish all of our other accommodations had been this nice. Special thanks to the owners who we enjoyed getting to know before, during and after our stay.

Best stay in Umbria Ideal to explore central Italy

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I spent two weeks at the villa in early September. It
couldn't have been better! Malcolm and Giulia are warm, friendly
and helpful and made our stay very special. This is a very large
apartment, but welcoming and comfortable. It is beautifully renovated charming, clean and well-equipped. The location, very close to Orvieto is perfect as a home base for visiting the many beautiful hilltop villages, although we found our favourite days were ones spent relaxing and enjoying the grounds and the shade under the oak trees. We loved the al fresco dining on the balcony overlooking the rolling Umbrian hills and the magical sunsets on the lake. We helped Giulia harvest the figs and the berries, and enjoyed tomatoes fresh from their garden. I made a wonderful ricotta and blackberries cake and we shared it with Malcolm and Giulia under their porch with a lovely glass of chilled Orvieto. We look forward to visiting again this year, but this time we’ll bring our friends to enjoy this beautiful place!

Life in the country

  • 5 of 5
The house was very well equipped, in great condition and had good facilities (for example, DVD player, WiFi). The hosts Malcolm and Giulia Stevens were most welcoming and friendly and gave lots of advice ranging from cooking, decent restaurants to the best Etruscan sites, etc.

Many interesting places to see nearby: Bolsena (great pizza! + swimming), Civita di Bagnoregio (a town falling into a ravine), Orvieto (humongous cathedral). Further afield: Assisi (very strongly recommended - good store selling olive wood products) and Tarquinia (v. strongly recommended, great for Etruscan culture). There is a train (7.21AM) to Florence from Orvieto (change at Chuisi - platform 5 - and arrive 15/20 minutes earlier).

Nearest local shops are in Montefiascone (about 10Km away, best is the CO-OP, but at 8-9 in the morning: bread fresh, lots of activity), also near the train station in Orvieto - big supermarket).

The house is not in walking distance to shops so a car is necessary. Also, be prepared for a complex drive - Italian street signs in the area are minimal (and usually very well hidden). Google Street view is helpful, especially for the critical turn off past SP54 intersection. Navigating round Orvieto is a truly enlightening experience.

The crucial question is: would we come back?
The answer is: Yes we will.

Facility and hosts 5 star

  • 5 of 5
After a long drive from Switzerland we arrived at this beautiful home - met by our very gracious hosts Malcolm and Guilia. They were so helpful and provided us with an unexpected welcome package which included a lovely bottle of wine. The house is in a quiet farming area and has a beautiful view of Lake Bolsena. It is situated right in the middle of numerous little villages that depict true life in Italy. We went to many including Orvieto, Todi, Assisi and many others. The lake that you see from your two verandas also has a charming and very italian village of Bolsena. We cannot say enought about the area. The house is something out of House and Home magazine. Anyone staying there is in for a real treat and in every room you can see the pride and joy taken by our hosts. The facility is even nicer than the pictures. If you are reading this review and thinking of going to Italy - stop right now - it does not get much better. The home and hosts are five star and you will never regret coming here. There was so much to see and do that we eliminated Rome from our things to see and do.

Thank you Malcolm and Guilia - it was great.

This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful parts of Italy; just how you would image traditional Italy to be and more! The villa is near the small town of Bagnoregio, situated on the border of Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio, within the D.O.C. region of the Orvieto and Est!Est!Est! wines. The hill top hamlet of Civita di Bagnoregio is part of our village and has been chosen as the location for so many films because it is so unique. Orvieto, Bolsena Tarquinia, Pitigliano, Todi are full of history and all within half an hour traveling and the main railway line and motorway network is fifteen minutes away, putting you in easy reach of Rome, Siena, Assisi, Gubbio and Florence. Lake Bolsena's beaches are only minutes away and offer water sports and fishing within an unforgettable setting.

There are daily markets at a different village every day of the week and the local cuisine based on fresh fish and local products must be experienced. Viterbo has fashionable shops and boutiques.

The Umbria region of Italy has been called 'The Green Heart of Italy', due to its central location and equal distance from Rome and Florence. The area is less discovered than its eastern neighbour, Tuscany, but just as magnificent. Umbria is a beautiful, unspoiled, countryside area of rolling, forested hills, vast grassy meadows covered with flowers, large olive grove plantations, and several lakes and valleys. The landscape is dotted with many picturesque medieval villages, and the people of the area are known for their distinctive cuisine, friendliness and hospitality.Like so much of Italy, food, wine, and entertainment are the core of Umbria's charm

The countryside which surrounds Orvieto is a spectacular mix of river plains, Apennine foothills, volcanic formations and wooded hills, providing an ideal and unspoilt habitat for many of Umbria’s native creatures. Walking and cycling holidays throughout the Orvieto region thrive, as the quality of life and nature is so high. The national parks of the area further protect the natural inhabitants of the Orvieto region, and also create fantastically picturesque leisure areas for locals and visitors. Lake of Bolsena is a wonderful place to walk and hike, as well as fish. Canoeing along the calm water surface with a fishing rod is an unbeatably relaxing experience, The many vineyards which adorn the lower slopes of the Apennine foothills provide the grapes from the famous Orvieto wines which you will undoubtedly try during your stay at the villa. Orvieto wine is a favourite on the global market, and is still made with traditional methods. Wine tours of Orvieto villas and wineries are available from many vineyards.

Touring the medieval villages which surround our villa is a great way to spend an afternoon, from the impressive hill top of Bagnoregio to the ruins of Montegiove. Almost every village or town you stumble across will hide an ancient monument with some degree of importance to the historical development of Umbria, Tuscany or Lazio.

There is a festival or event in this area during almost every month of the year, meaning that there are never two holidays in the Orvieto region the same.
