Owl's Nest will give you that 'home-away-from-home' feeling as soon as you enter the door. The house is painted in vibrant colors and offers ample space for all. You will love the Maine granite counter tops in the large kitchen, the light dining area and the beautiful views. With four bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs there is enough space for everybody. The spacious master bedroom with adjoining bathroom on the first floor will give mom and dad their own space, or great for the grandparents.
The location is perfect: close by all that Mount Desert Island has to offer, yet far away enough to enjoy the peace and quiet. The spacious back yard has a picnic table, lawn, natural swing set, fire pit (permit required) and lots of woods to explore! The front lawn is great for ball games and BBQ's. The house is child-friendly and ample outside and inside toys will be provided for you to use. (including books, cars, blocks, art supplies, puzzles and games, side walk chalk, kiddie pool, balls etc.)
Rain or shine, you won't be bored in Owls Nest. We made Netflix Instant watch available for all our guests as well as Wi-Fi throughout the house. There is a piano and lots of books and magazines as well as games and puzzles. Among the books are books about Maine, and Mount Desert Island, including some hiking and biking guides.
Edith and Ron moved to Bar Harbor from the Netherlands. Ron is working at the Jackson Laboratory and Edith spends most of her time between multiple volunteer positions, writing and taking care of their three children. This summer the family is managing the summer student program and will be the 'dorm- parents' for 34 summer students!
Edith Schriever Korstanje purchased this house in 2010
After renting for many years, Edith and Ron finally managed to buy a piece of land and built their dream home in 2010. The location is perfect: a neighborhood for the kids to play in, mountain views for three out of the four seasons, and a wooded area to explore. This has it all. The back yard is still a work in progress and each year Edith and Ron add to the landscaping.
The house is energy efficient and last August the owners installed solar panels. It's important to Edith and Ron to 'go green' as much as possible.
Owl's Nest is enjoyed year-round, with each season's own highlights.
In the winter, the children enjoy sledding down the hill in the back yard, while the spring is the season to re-discover the woods. Summer is a time of relaxation in the back yard, listing to the owls hooting at dusk or having water balloon fights around the house. Fall is an explosion of color, with the different leaves of the maples, the birches and the oaks .
The location is perfect: close by all that Mount Desert Island has to offer, yet far away enough to enjoy the peace and quiet. The children can go out and explore without having to be too worried about their where-abouts. The road with the cul-de-sac is great for biking up and down and we often go out for an evening walk with a stop at the ice cream place across Pirate's Cove.
The owls nest was the perfect house and the perfect location for our 8 person trip to Acadia. It is located just a couple miles outside of Acadia so it could not be a better location. The house had full amenities, was clean, was well stocked etc... My parents couldn't believe that I had found such an amazing place to stay. Edith was very responsive and excellent to work with. Diver Ed's Dive in Theater is a must if you have kids. Mainely Meat is a restaurant about a mile up the road and it had excellent lobster dinners and BBQ for those not wanting lobster - can you imagine?? Awesome vacation spot!! Thank you Edith and family!
My family had such a great time staying at Owl's Nest in Bar Harbor. The house was very spacious with a huge (beautiful) kitchen where we prepared and ate all our breakfasts and many dinners. The large deck was very nice as well.
We have 3 children ages 1, 4 and 7 who loved playing in the yard and driveway. Lets face it - kids need space to run around! The location is a quiet cul du sac with no traffic and lots of privacy, yet a 5 minute drive to downtown Bar Harbor and Acadia. The house had everything we could need and more. Owners are very attentive and accommodating. This was our favorite family vacation ever! I highly recommend this vacation rental!
I can't say enough good things about this house and its location. It was spacious, clean, comfortable, beautifully decorated, and well-appointed. We had 8 people from 9 to 86 years of age, and we all agreed we would come back again! It is in a quiet neighborhood on the northern side of MDI, just five minutes from the town of Bar Harbor. It was also an easy drive to the western side of the island, down into the national park area, and back to the mainland. The owners were very friendly and helpful with arrangements and information about the area.
We had a wonderful time and were pleased to see the house exceeded our expectations based on the photos. The house was very clean and well-maintained and we had everything in the kitchen we needed to eat most of our meals at the house. We spend the majority of our time out back, with the children playing on the swing, chasing the stream, and exploring the woods. We saw deer, fox, and listened to the hooting owls in the evening.
We used the Island shuttle every day and the convenience of being on the shuttle route was great. We were able to easily ride bikes to the shuttle stop and catch the continuous shuttles to town and Acadia National Park.
We had an extremely enjoyable week on MDI staying in this house. The house was very clean and organized; we had everything we needed to make and enjoy meals in the house. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable, and ample closet space was provided. The kids enjoyed the toys, books, and games. The new deck was a very nice feature and has a table large enough for a group to eat outside. The owners left behind detailed notes on how things worked, which we really appreciated.
The setting is very quiet and wooded, which was a plus. We found the location convenient - easy to get to the park, get to Ellsworth, or to drive downtown.
We took advantage of the ice cream shop that is practically across the street from the neighborhood entrance many times!
We would stay here again or recommend it to other.
This house was spacious, completely equipped with all the extras (spices, plastic baggies, reading material, DVD collection) and very clean. Beds were comfortable and showers worked great. The huge outdoor deck looks out on the woods with no other houses in site. We liked the location outside of town for it's peacefulness (exploring the woods) and convenience (early arrival/ departure times, decreased driving to mainland sites) and loved the local lobster pound. Although we only had one car, there was plenty of driveway space if it is necessary. The owners couldn't have been kinder or more accommodating.
Owl's Nest is located only 2.7 miles from the Hulls Cove visitor center and Acadia Park entrance. Less than a mile from Owl's Nest you'll find Hamilton Pond, a great spot for fishing (permit required). Salisbury Cove is around the corner, with ocean access and Pirate's Cove adventure golfing is less than a mile from the house. Two family oriented restaurants are located around Pirate's Cove and Lake Wood is only 3.3 miles from the house, with its crystal clear water and mountain view swimming. From Owl's Nest it's only a short drive to Eagle Lake and this is a great starting point for hiking and biking. Bar Harbor is less than 6 miles away and offers ample shopping and dining opportunities. Bar Harbor has also multiple kayak- and bicycle renting places to expand your fun. Multiple boats leave daily for whale watching, Nature tours and deep sea fishing!
If you feel like staying home, Owl's Nest offers you a quiet neighborhood with lots of different birds to watch. At dusk you might hear or see the owls! Deer and turkeys are among the frequent visitors in the back yard.
Don't feel like driving and dealing with parking issues? Walk to the end of Stony Brook and hop on the free Island explorer! The free bus service will bring you to all top locations on the entire island.
Children will have a blast playing in the woods surrounding the house and the natural swing set and climbing wall. A kiddy pool is available for water fun right at home. The new and expanded deck with views of the woods and Cadillac mountain in the distance invite you for many nights among the stars or to soak up the sun. Enjoy the peace and quiet while having all modern comforts and a safe place for children to play, bike and run!
