In Costa Rica pura vida is a colloquial expression which literally means 'pure life' but that's not all. To fully appreciate this national slogan, experiencing it is a must . . . and there is no better place to do so than at Casa De Carroll. Located on the Pacific side of the Pan-American Highway this luxurious 3,400 sf home features three master suites, an infinity pool, proximity to world-class surf and secluded beaches. In addition to panoramic ocean views, luscious jungle, the guiding light of fire flires by night, and numerous entertaining monkeys which surround the property, there is an activities director who can assist in finding you the perfect adventure or restaurant. Experience Costa Rica to find out what pura vida really means at Casa De Carroll.

We recommend 4W in Costa Rica. You never know what adventure you might want to go on!!

About The Owner

Patti and I live in Santa Cruz California.

I am a custom home builder and Patti is a baker/landscaper/interior decorator

We had a dream....to build a house in Costa Rica. The home just completed in 2011!!!! After many years of construction......you are staying in our dream/reality house Enjoy!!!

The Owner purchased this house in 2005

Why The Owner chose Dominical

Jim , I and one of our sons, Dane took a road trip down the coast... looking for the perfect spot the buy our home.Starting @ Puntarenas... stopping at all the well know surf towns .....We just weren't feeling it!!!.....when we got to Dominical.... we fell in love with the lush tropical feel, not yet developed town... beautiful beaches and of course we had to have great surf close by!!! We made our final decision when we found this great piece of property that was out of town yet close to surf, great beaches and resaurants. The property is on the ocean side of the highway ,a great road with year round access was a must. We had struck gold!!! 6 years later ,our home is complete!!!

What makes this house unique

One of our favorite things, is when the howler monkeys come to visit...It can be while you are in the pool on a raft (in the tree just above the pool, to eat the pods) or they may come while you still sleeping in the very early morning .You will know this, because you will hear them!! The white- face monkey are very quite...you will only know they are in the area, when you notice the branches moving and see there little faces.

The sights and sounds of the jungle are amazing...we hear and see new things with the differnet times of year that we are at the house. Keep your eyes open for the big blue butterflies. One flys through almost every morning, they are beautiful!

Fabulous Private Home In the Costa Rican jungle but still close to Town & Beach

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 4 with two daughters (age 15 and 10) and this was our first trip to Costa Rica. Casa de Carroll is AMAZING and was the perfect choice for our family vacation. This was the first time I ever used VRBO. Dealing with Patti (the owner) was very easy and their concierge, Silvia, set up numerous activities for us that went off without a hitch. The house is beautiful and very private. Each bedroom has its own bathroom and the house was very clean and "like new". The kitchen is nice with granite countertops and most of the ammenities you will need (bring paper towels with you as the management company doesn't provide any). The pool is amazing. We were in the pool every morning before heading out to white water raft, zip line, surf or hike. I highly recommend Dominical Surf Adventures for surf lessons and a white water raft tour. I reccommend the zipline at Titi Canopy Tours where we saw tons of monkeys. The house looks much better than the pictures in the listing and is truly first rate all the way. The house is about 7 miles south of the downtown area of Dominical so you need a vehicle and 4 wheel drive is what I would recommend even though the driveway into the house is not that bad, you will need 4 wheel drive to explore the other areas around Dominical. We saw a ton of wildlife in our time in Costa Rica. We saw a Scarlet McCaw, Toucans, Monkeys, Iguanas, Turtles, crazy looking bugs, Egrets, etc.. The beaches are incredible and virtually empty. We hiked down to a few beaches (one right in front of the house) and we were literally the only people on the beach. The trail down to the beach is steep but not that bad since we are used ot steep mountains in Park City, UT. The ocean water is really warm and the jungle goes right down to the beach with coconut, banana, and mango trees all around. The Costa Rican people are so nice and accomodating and the town of Dominical, with its unpaved streets, is very cool and fun and has some good restaurants - we liked Maracatu and Tortilla Flats the best.

Patti and Jim - Thank you so much for sharing your Costa Rican paradise with us. It was truly the best vacation we have ever had and now my 15 year old daughter wants to move to Costa Rica!! It was a vacation that our kids will remember forever. Being in a house like yours made it so much more relaxing and special than staying in a hotel. I don't think I can ever go back to a hotel now!! Thanks again!

Costa Rica - Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Casa de Carroll was great. We stayed for one week and would definitely go back. The home is exactly as shown in the pictures and was a great base for our adventures. Our party included 2 adults and 4 kids (18, 18, 16, 12). The owner and local manager were always responsive to our questions before and during our stay.

We saw monkeys, birds and a horse (in the pasture below the house) on a daily basis. The location was perfect and made excursions to Ojochal, Uvita, Dominical and other areas within easy driving distance. The home is very private....you don't see another house or person while on property. Most evenings were spent in the pool after a long day at the beach or exploring. The house was well equipped and had almost everything we needed (cooking utensils, pool towels, hammocks, hair dryer, etc.). A couple of maintenance issues were addressed quickly by the local manager.

I highly recommend Tito at Uvita360 if you want to rent surf boards. We rented the boards and took them to Playa Hermosa, our favorite beach. Whitewater rafting with Karlos and his son, Ernesto, from Autentico Adventures was a fun day. Osa Canopy Tour was exhilarating. The ATV tour with Diamante Tours was cool. We saw waterfalls and panoramic views that we probably would have missed otherwise. The waterfall at El Pavon is not to be missed (not part of the ATV tour).

Be advised that eating out in Costa Rica is not cheap. I highly recommend eating at the local sodas and buying fruit at the roadside stands ...it will save you A LOT OF MONEY. The local grocery stores were well stocked, too.

Exchange your currency for Costa Rican Colones. For the best exchange rate go to a bank, not the airport currency exchange. Bank = 528 Colones per $1USD v Airport Currency Exchange = 460 Colones per $1USD (13% difference!!). Most local businesses give you 500 Colones....not bad, but exchanging cash currency for Colones at a bank is easy (btw...there is a bank on the top concourse at the SJO airport, don't use the current exchange near baggage claim).

My last piece of advice is be sure to have very detailed driving directions from SJO to Casa de Carroll (GPS even better). We got lost in San Jose and on the way to Jaco. You will need about 1,000 Colones for tolls on Route 27. However, once at Casa de Carroll, you will relax and enjoy. Thank you Jim and Patti for sharing your piece of paradise with us.

Loved our stay in this tranquil house surrounded by wildlife!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa de Carroll for a week, and could not think of a better place to be. It is secluded and surrounded by tons to see. We saw so much wildlife just from the house - troops of howler and capuchin monkeys (and once where they even crossed paths in the trees heading in opposite directions), olingo, coati, toucans, hummingbirds, chachalacas, vultures, frigatebirds, pelicans, lots of butterflies including the Blue Morphos...and much more. It was fantastic to just sit outside or lounge in the pool and spot so many beautiful things.

The bedrooms all have an AC unit (which was important while we were there). It was very warm during the day, but we spent most of our time on excursions or at beaches and could also hop in the pool for a quick cool down. We also hit the pool every night to close out the day. The pool was our favorite feature of the house. The bathrooms were great, and there was plenty of room to spread out.

The location of the house makes it easy to explore north and south. We visited beaches in both directions and found something beautiful and appealing about each one - Playa Uvita (Marino Ballena), Playa Ventanas (fun caves to explore at low tide or when the tide is coming in and great body surfing), Playa Hermosa (great sunset beach), Playa Dominical (great place to surf or watch surfers) and Playa Matapalo (beautiful secluded beach that stretches on forever). We were also able to do a few tours, including a guided day in Manuel Antonio, night mangrove tour north of Quepos, and a horseback ride to Nauyaca Falls. One afternoon we also went to the butterfly sanctuary between Quepos and Manuel Antonio. If you want to see the Blue Morphos up close I highly recommend this place.

We had a couple meals catered in, and then either cooked on our own or ate out. The kitchen is well equipped. The restaurants that we liked the most were Mama y Papa in Ojochal, Langosta Feliz in Matapalo (order the Mariscos for two) and La Palapa Restaurant at Cuna del Angel Hotel (at the turnout for the dirt road to the house).

All communication with the owners, including booking the rental, was very easy. The property manager (Kelley) was also helpful while we were in the house with recommendations for restaurants and activities, and assistance when we needed it. It is fantastic home and we are so grateful we got to spend a week in it!

Pura Vida!!

Christmas with the Howlers!

  • 5 of 5

Loved, loved, loved this Villa and Dominical! Beautifully maintained and scenery to take your every breath away. Woke every morning to incredible mountain views with ever changing colors. The howlers came to the pool at dusk...inquisitive and adorable. The Toucans graced us with their presence everyday. My family of 4 appreciated and enjoyed having their own room and bathroom. Ideal for 3 couples or family of 4.

Best Christmas ever!!!

Escape

  • 5 of 5

This home is amazing! I have traveled all over the world to exotic places and this home combines both comfort and being in the beauty that is Costa Rica. You can stay put in the home and enjoy the hammocks, full kitchen, infinity pool or roam around some of the most beautiful and majestic beaches on the Pacific Coast. The beaches are perfect for swimmers, surfers, and those who want to sit back and escape. Very few vendors to disturb your comfort but also very safe with enough amenities - a few great restaurants, grocery stores, ceviche stands and bars to have enough to do... We could have stayed an extra week or two and just escaped. The house is perfectly situated on a hill, with a short walk to its own beach, and amazing sunsets and sunrises that really captivate a person's senses. The weather is breezy and the stars are plentiful and your only neighbors are the occasional monkeys, tucans and other tropical wild life. It is a beautiful escape and I hope you get to enjoy this property soon.

Super Rad!!⭐️

  • 5 of 5

I still can't believe the week I spent in Costa Rica! This property is amazing. The views alone made it worth while but the kitchen was icing on the cake! We used this kitchen from the get go! The kitchen enhanced the experience. We made breakfast/coffee every morning and dinner several nights. We ate outside and enjoyed every minute of it. There are many hammocks that will rock you to sleep. The infinity pool is gorgeous and a great way to cool off while watching monkeys play in the trees. Toucans frequently stopped by for a bit, just enough time to take pics...

This home is a small walk from a secluded beach, minutes from incredible coffee and fantastic sushi! The beaches in the area are all incredible. You cannot look around without seeing something breathtakingly beautiful. Each room has its own bathroom which is a huge plus and there is also a guest bathroom. The fans make the inside the house lovely but why would you stay inside when you can go outside...and sit under more fans:)

Thank you for the relaxing experience,

Melanie
