Makere Cottage is nestled on Soldier Hill with gentle breezes and breathtaking views over Cane Garden Bay, surrounding islands and the Caribbean Sea. Situated at the end of a short gated drive with a private 20-foot swimming pool and large sun terrace, Makere Cottage represents the ideal retreat in which to relax and unwind.
The cottage is very spacious and ideal for a couple or family. The master bedroom has a king-size bed, day bed and plenty of closet space. The living room can be converted to a second bedroom with pull out sofa bed for a couple or two single beds for children. Both the bedroom and living room adjoin a 10-foot covered deck. The kitchen has all modern requirements and there is a large private bathroom. There is a second large overflow fridge freezer in the utility room if required along with a cooler for the beach.
The swimming pool is on the same level as the cottage offering a welcome escape from the Caribbean heat. A sun terrace providing a spacious area for both sunbathing and al fresco dining surrounds the pool. This new cottage has been built very much in the ‘Caribbean Style’ with wooden decks, blue shutter windows, white walls and terracotta-tiled floors creating a clean and simple environment.
You will need to hire a 4-wheel drive vehicle on arrival in Tortola. We can advise you on your travel arrangements, help you find the right car rental company and arrange for you to be met, either at the ferry terminal or airport, and escorted to the property. When you arrive at Makere you will be met by the property manager, who is also a neighbor, and provided with keys and a quick orientation before being left in peace to enjoy your vacation.
Makere Cottage is one of two villas on the property. If you book Makere Cottage, the upper villa will not be occupied, ensuring your complete privacy. However, if would like to vacation with friends and family and require additional accommodation then you can book both Makere Cottage and House together. For further information on booking Makere House and Cottage together please visit our separate VRBO listing 391477.

We – Adam (44), Tina (45), William (14) and Alexandra (11) have recently returned to live in Hampshire, England. Adam was born on Soldier Hill in 1970 while his parents were living and working on Tortola. In 1999 he married Tina and together they decided to build a home on the same spot with the dream that family and friends could visit the island and enjoy holidays together. The result is Makere and we hope you have as much fun there as we do!
Tina Richards purchased this villa in 2009
With its central location Makere Cottage is an ideal setting from which to explore the island. Tortola is best known for its secluded beaches with their gentle surf, golden sands and tall overhanging palm trees. The beaches of Cane Garden Bay and Brewers Bay are both a short 5-minute drive away down opposite sides of Solider Hill. They contrast each other perfectly. Cane Garden Bay offers lively bars and restaurants whilst Brewers Bay is peaceful and quiet with superb swimming and snorkeling. If you want to visit the capital Road Town to shop or take ferries to the many other islands, it too is only a 15-minute drive away.
Dear Tina and Adam - thank you for allowing us the privilege of staying at your cottage. We were thrilled the moment we stepped onto the property. The view is stunning and the evening breezes are lovely. Thanks again and we will be back. Ronda and Ray
We just finished a two-week vacation at Makere Cottage, celebrating 20 years of marriage. Wow, the entire two weeks was absolute perfection.
The majority of our time was spent being mesmerized by the breathtaking view. Every day, I was reminded of this quote (by good ol’ Anonymous): “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” Amen. We basically wore out a path between the deck, the couch (with the French doors open to the view), and the pool area…celebrating life’s moments – meals, meditation, happy hour, deep conversations, and just “being”.
We loved everything about Makere – the beautiful deck, the air-conditioned bedroom, the cleanliness, the quiet and peacefulness, the proximity to Cane Garden Bay, the privacy, the stunning and majestic views, the landscaping and lush greenery and trees, the beautiful pool area, and the friendliness and hospitality of the owner and nearby property manager. We felt very loved, welcomed, and cared for and are beyond appreciative of every little detail that made up this unforgettable vacation.
I am returning to life at home with a renewed sense of peace and enlightenment and cannot wait to share it with others. If you choose to stay at Makere, know that you will be richly blessed!
Thank you, Tina & Adam. Thank you, Mobbsie. You will not be forgotten!
We spent a week at Makere Cottage in July 2014. We're seasoned travelers, but had never been to the Caribbean. I asked Tina many questions about the property and Tortola. She was really helpful and quick to respond. She was also very honest about the fact that the cottage is open to the elements, meaning that there will be insects around. We were fine with that, but it was good to know in advance. We loved the warm and pleasing décor of the cottage, very relaxing. We spent a lot of time on the back balcony enjoying the spectacular views! We also really appreciated the air conditioning in the bedroom, because it did get hot and humid. Mobbsie was great, answered our questions, helped orient us, and was fun to talk to. I loved the pool, wonderful to jump in and cool off. As others have said, you must have a 4-wheel drive to get around the island. We found the roads scary at first, but you do get used to it. Watch how the locals manage the hills and curves. There is a technique. Many thanks to Tina and family for providing such a pleasing place to vacation!
We immediately felt welcomed by the beautiful (and very clean) accommodations and by Mobbsie! The views from the cottage are breathtaking and the environment is so relaxing and comfortable. Our favorite parts of the day were the mornings and evenings (sunsets) on the veranda. And the on-site pool is such a bonus! It was hard to leave and explore some days! It is truly a very special place; I would be more recommending if I could be!
Thanks to Tina, her family, and her amazing caretaker Mobbsie for an amazing week. It could not have been a more wonderful experience. Tina was responsive, encouraging and helpful in emailing and advising us on best ways to travel (just after a hurricane!) and make necessary arrangements. The property itself is incredible: simply yet beautifully appointed, all details taken care of, the view is beyond breathtaking. We ate many meals at Myetts and other local spots, but cooked and ate on the deck quite often. We have stayed in many different places on Tortola over the past ten years, and Makere Cottage is by far our favorite. A few tips: you will absolutely need an SUV to get around the island safely (screw up your courage for these drives), provisions can be obtained in Roadtown or West End (and these food prices are MUCH higher than where we are from), Brewers Bay and Cane Garden Bay are amazing in every way, don't forget about Smuggler's Cove (it's worth the bumpy ride to get there). We took a ferry ride to the Baths on Virgin Gorda, and were so glad we did. It was an amazing week in an amazing place. Highly recommended.
Our week in Makere Cottage couldn't have been any better! Starting off w/the responsiveness of Tina (the owner) answering emails...to the cottage itself...to THE VIEW (Cane Garden Bay was our favorite of all the bays!!) We truly felt as though we were in paradise! We can't compliment everyone/everything enough...a remarkable, memorable week!
This is a fantastic property! As mentioned in other reviews, the view is breathtaking as well as indescribable – photos capture the view, but they just don’t do it proper justice. The home is immaculate, well-appointed, romantic, and secluded – just perfect for my husband and me. The kitchen had everything we needed to enjoy meals there. In fact, we opted for days and nights in to eat there so we could enjoy the pool, drinks on the beautiful veranda and pool deck, and, of course, the view. We did enjoy exploring the island and beautiful beaches, but we always looked forward to returning to the cottage. To have such a lovely view above Cane Garden Bay, you must venture up the steep roads full of switchbacks. Granted, the roads do take a bit of getting used to, but they are easily traversed after a few attempts; in fact, we were flying down them like locals after a bit (we used Jerry’s Car Rental – they were waiting for us at the West End Ferry Dock and supplied us with a great 4-wheel drive vehicle – I recommend them). Cane Garden Bay is a quick drive away, as is Brewer’s Bay (a beautiful and near-deserted beach in the mornings). Mobbsie (the property manager who lives nearby – a lovely Australian fellow), met us in Cane Garden Bay, and we followed him up to the cottage where he showed us around and answered any questions we had. The grounds of the property are amazing, there is a washer and dryer, coolers to use, and we were left without wanting for anything – except, a return visit! I highly recommend Makere Cottage. I had high expectations for this stay – and Makere Cottage exceeded them.
