Our home is a craftsman bungalow located in Uptown on Apple Street, two blocks from the St. Charles Trolley. Right at the intersection of Apple, Fontainebleau and Carrollton Streets, our block has had many of the same residents for years. Upper Carrollton is a part of Uptown that has long retained elements of its historical identity. The Carrollton neighborhood was developed when the St. Charles trolley was opened in the 1830's.
The large, private back yard is very New Orleans. We have a pond and bridge a waterfall and a gazebo. While you are in the middle of the city, the pond and waterfall create a peaceful environment.
The pond, which is about 5,000 gallons, contains anywhere from twelve to thirty-six koi. The pond attracts herons and kingfishers which, to our chagrin, like to dine at our place.
There is extensive ground lighting. In a tribute to old New Orleans, there are eighteen flickering Bourbon Street gas lanterns lining the seven-foot high walls.
The entire house and yard are wired for sound, so bring your iphone. There are four televisions and a CD player.
In the yard there is a large gas grill, a refrigerator, a wooden table and eight chairs. The table and chairs are made of eucalyptus, which is not only extremely dense but a sustainable resource. The area is pet friendly with custom-built cedar fences enclosing the underside of the home. There is also a 48” double door, wire kennel for your dog.
The kitchen floor is made from bricks recaptured from old buildings and sliced into beautiful floor tiles. The cherry cabinetry and granite countertops are striking.
Our home is stay-ready. The stocked kitchen has a large gas range, a convection oven and a microwave convection oven. With a breakfast bar and a kitchen table, the kitchen seats eight.
The property has hardwood floors throughout the rest of the home; in both living rooms and each of the three bedrooms.
The master bedroom has a beautiful sleigh bed (queen size). The master bath has a ceramic tile floor and a large sunken Jacuzzi tub. In addition, there is a salt water coral reef. It's our little coral marine colony. Besides their stunning beauty, coral reefs protect coastal areas around the world.
The guest bathroom is decorated floor to ceiling in Travertine Italian tile. The shower has a number of Kohler fixtures; two digital thermostat control systems, two traditional shower heads, eight overhead shower heads and four body sprays.
The property also has a king size bed, two twin beds and a sleeper sofa. In addition, there is an inflatable mattress.
Hi, I'm Finley. I own the house with Jeff. I am a clothing designer, born on the Gulf Coast, west of New Orleans. While we live in Dallas, I have spent much of my life in and around the Crescent City, first with my family and now with my guy, Jeff.
Finley and Jeff purchased this house in 2011
We both agreed that we wanted to dig-in for the long term in New Orleans and be part of the regrowth of our marvelous city. Jeff actually bought the house without my knowledge. He has always said that the reason he bought it was so he could propose to me in the backyard. He did. (On his knees while we were on the bridge overlooking the pond.) Then, as you can see from our photos, we got married in the back yard. The house has a very strong sentimental attachment.
There is nothing like having coffee in the morning, out in the gazebo, with your closest friends or dearest family members. The gazebo is a place to talk. The waterfall provides a soothing, peaceful environment for you to share secrets, make plans or conduct business.
Had an amazing time in New Orleans the house was great spacious back yard and not far from all the main attractions wonderful owners would highly recommend to anybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This property is beautiful. Our whole family thoroughly enjoyed our stay and loved all the creature comforts! If you are thinking of coming to New Orleans, this is a great place to stay that is close to the trolley and bus lines. We would not hesitate to book this property again!
This was our first visit to New Orleans but it definitely won't be our last! Jeff and Finley's house was an oasis after a day of exploring the wonders of New Orleans. The house had all the charm of a classic New Orleans house with many high end features of a modern house. Our dog Cassie also enjoyed the house and large back yard. We would definitely stay here again!
Thank You so much for allowing us to be your guest, We enjoyed our stay and especially the backyard! The back yard was so relaxing, we spent most of our down time there. The home is wonderful and we felt like we were home away from home.
Like another of your fans, I am very late with this review. But I did want to say how much we enjoyed our 10-day stay in August. We wanted to "live like locals" as much as possible, and we did. The house is perfectly located and was exactly as advertised. Great kitchen! Super nice screened-in gazebo with ceiling fan. Andy was wonderful! We drove all over the place, looking at various neighborhoods with the idea that we might want to retire down in New Orleans, and we haven't changed out minds. Found some great places to eat: Squeal on Oak Street has great food (barbecue with a twist!), great drinks, and great company (especially co-owner Gene, who treated us like we were regulars). Two great breakfast places: Camellia Grill absolutely worth standing in line for but we actually had to stand in line only once and excellent food. And we shopped at Robert's almost every day we were there. The location of the house was perfect for us: easy getting to the French Quarter and very, very easy to drive around in. We quickly picked up the back ways to get where we were going and never got lost anywhere. We had our two elderly dogs with us and they enjoyed hanging out in the gazebo with us. It was just a lovely, lovely vacation -- exactly what we had hoped for! Thanks for the "good times."
This review is so late but we have been so busy blissfully honeymooning since getting married in NOLA last fall, that I forgot to take the time to write it. It is hard to imagine finding a better home to rent during our stay last year. We booked this house for the week of our destination wedding and several wedding party members stayed with us during that time. From the street view of the property, you have no idea what beauty awaits you inside! It definitely exceeded our expectations. The pictures are great, but they do not do this property justice. The décor is so tasteful, the home is so spacious. As soon as you enter you know that you are about to really enjoy yourself. There are so many areas to sit and relax, from the 2 seating areas in the front part of the home, to the spacious kitchen, to the backyard which is a New Orleans Oasis!!! The gas lamps flickering at night, the soothing sound of the water from the pond it is a totally serene and relaxing environment. We had multiple areas to sit outside including the Gazebo. I had initially planned to go to City Park with my photographer to take my Bridal Portraits on the day we arrived, but when she came to meet me at the house and saw this backyard, we agreed to shoot right there which was so convenient for me as far as getting in & out of my dress. We even did some shots inside the house. They all came out beautiful!!! Also, since there is so much space in this home, we were able to host a luncheon after our wedding rehearsal with our wedding party and even welcomed some of our wedding guests that arrived the evening before the wedding. Everyone absolutely loved this house & was raving about it. The premiere sound system allowed us to have music throughout which was very much appreciated by these music lovers. Each morning we all fought for our turn in the shower that can only be described as heavenly! The kitchen is fully equipped with all of the cooking utensils, dishes, pots and pans you could ever need & we used them throughout the week. Jackie, who was right next door, was responsive to all of our needs. The only issue we had was the washing machine did not work. It would not drain or spin properly. Jackie called out a repairman but they just never got it working quite right again. Honestly we were able to make do without it & I will not let that minor issue make our review less than 5 stars. It pales in comparison to all of the wonderful memories we made with our family during this time !
The Carrollton neighborhood is a unique part of Uptown. The neighborhood is termed “the next great neighborhood in New Orleans”. Look at a map. Because we are in the inner arc of the Crescent City you have easy access to all parts of the city. You are in the middle of everything.
