Our family has a very rich history in Bluffton. Our Great Grandfather came to the area from Sweden and worked in the papermill. Our Grandfather was born and raised in Bluffton. He grew up during the Actors' colony glory days. Grandpa liked fun gatherings with tasty food, illegal alcohol and late night card games. Because Grandpa was a rumrunner, (in his younger years) it is no surprise, that he hung out with the actors. He even played baseball on a team with Buster Keaton.
Grandpa did settle down and married Delores Sauve (we called her Mere Mere). She played the piano for silent movies. Grandpa built our family homes right here on Cherry Street, in the middle of the actors colony. He designed them to be a place for entertaining and great food, as he was a great cook! Kind of like an original 'Mr. Mom'. This worked out perfectly because Mere Mere opened her hat shop, called Sauve, in downtown Muskegon. Mere Mere was always working at her shop.
Here on Cherry Street, Dad grew up next to Max Gruber (Ringmaster of the act 'Oddities of the Jungle'). Dad even had some of the retired animals from this act, as pets. H remembered, well, the circus animals, including elephants, in the neighborhood. The elephants would walk down to the beach to bathe and cool off. Dad said that the area was so relaxed that the neighborhood kids could interact with these animals. Not surprising that my Dad always had a great way with animals.
We've recently converted our homes into seasonal rentals. It is kind of our way of paying tribute to our Grandfather, and a way to keep these homes in our family. We think that Grandpa would love the idea that people would come to celebrate and spend their vacations with great food and drinks and lots of loved ones. That is the tradition that he started and we hope that you will continue.
