About Mel Krogseng

Bob and Mel Krogseng have lived in Alaska for over 43 years now. Bob hails from Minnesota and Mel from Florida. Bob retired from the Air Force after 22 years as an Air Force officer. Bob flew 232 combat missions in Vietnam as a backseater in the F4D and was awarded 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 16 Air Medals plus numerous other awards. After retiring from the Air Force, Bob worked for the Epa for a short time before taking the position of Alaska Manager for Terrestrial Environmental Services working on the Susitna Hydroelectric Project. When TES lost it's contract, Bob joined Mel in their real estate office. He subsequently completed the Alaska State Trooper Academy and then took a position as a Public Safety Officer with the North Slope Borough in Barrow. In 1990, Bob was offered a job in Soldotna with the AK Dept of Environmental Conservation. He retired from DEC in 1998 and has been playing with the kamp ever since. Mel's career started out in Miami as an RN. She joined the Air Force in 1963 and went to Flight nursing school in San Antonio. She met Bob in 1964 at KI Sawyer AFB, MI and they were married in 1965. Mel resigned in 1966 and then followed Bob on his AF assignments. When Bob went to Nam, Mel went to San Francisco where she got the position of Operating Room Supervisor at Chinese Hospital and worked there for 1 year waiting for Bob. More recently, Mel worked as Chief of Staff for the Speaker of the AK House of Representatives and then as Deputy Commissioner of Health and Social Services. Subsequently Mel and Bob bought out other partners in their Kenai River property and then started Krog's Kamp. Since starting the kamp, they have developed it into a thriving business. They live on the property so that they can make sure that their clients and guests have nothing but the best in service. If you come to Krog's Kamp, you will come as a guest and leave as a friend. We hope you will come and join our family of friends.

Why Mel Krogseng chose Soldotna

Krog's Kamp is one of a kind, located in the most prime location on the Kenai River and central to all areas of the Kenai Peninsula. Krog's Kamp is a first class establishment offering first class service at lower than average rates.

What makes this chalet unique

Krog's Kamp is part of an old federal homestead and therefore does not have a pedestrian easement along the bank. The fishing is superb and only available to guests in kamp. Krog's Kamp looks out at an island that is part of the state park system hence nothing will ever be built in front to destroy the view. In the evening when there are only a limited number of clouds, we get incredible sunsets.

There are festivals during the summer and a Wednesday and Saturday market. There is a NASA Challenger Learning Center, 3 golf courses close by, the Kenai River is your front yard. Commuter air service and rental cars are available in Kenai. There is good shopping as well as fishing. Sightseeing is around every corner and photo opportunities abound. Just a short distance down in Homer is a fairly new Aleutian Islands Center. There are marine tours as well as aerial tours. You can rent fishing gear at the kamp and take a guided fishing trip for salmon, trout or halibut. We are like the hub of a wheel, convenient to the entire Kenai Peninsula. For a truly unique way to see the Peninsula, a horseback trek up into the mountains is a must, or take a raft trip down the Kenai and stop at some of the Alaska Native pit houses that lay along the banks of the Kenai. If you don't want to cook, although our units have fully equipped kitchens, there are many good restaurants nearby.
