Originally part of a large dairy farm, this 200-year-old farmhouse (known locally as the Carver house) was completely renovated in 2007. The property includes a large horse barn, a dairy barn, an antique brick smokehouse, and a milk house. The house is located near Manchester, Vermont in a small, classic New England village. The farmhouse is currently used to film the Cook’s Country public television show and is also available for rent.
The kitchen – the same kitchen featured on the television show – is complete with DCS ranges and ovens, Kohler sinks and fixtures, and has a wonderful view out back of the barns and meadows. The dining room is capable of accommodating at least a dozen guests, the living room has a working fireplace, and there is a mud room, wraparound & screened-in porches, and a brick patio off the back.
The home is chock-full of antiques. It comfortably sleeps 10, in 4 bedrooms, each with a queen bed, and 2 of the bedrooms include twin beds. We also have two twin air mattresses available as well as a crib and a pack 'n play. There are 2 1/2 baths -- both full baths feature beautiful tiled showers and one includes a separate bear-claw tub. There is also a full laundry in basement (washer & dryer).
The home contains a Google widescreen TV with access to Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos, a DVD player, Direct TV service, and general high-speed wifi access throughout the house. Phone for local and long distance calls. Alarm clocks in all bedrooms. Hair dryer, local maps, and firewood also provided.
The Cook's Country House looks beautiful on television and if possible, it's even more beautiful in person. This was by far the best rental we've ever stayed at. As a thank you for our wedding, my husband and I decided to rent the house for six nights and invite my parents, as well as my sister, brother-in-law--and the family dog! It was a great place to stay in a beautiful area of Vermont.
The house was immaculate. We tend to be persnickety. My mother, who is something of a clean freak, spent about four straight hours cleaning our last rental in the same area of Vermont. Even she was impressed by the cleanliness. There was also a remarkable attention to detail. The house is outfitted for kids (with pack-and-play, baby swing, and more); there are board games, books, and a whole library of America's Test Kitchen/ Cook's Illustrated books and magazines. A homemade pie, box of cookies, eggs, bacon, milk, orange juice, and fruit were waiting for us upon arrival, as well as a signed cookbook and bottle of maple syrup from Christopher Kimball's farm.
I am sure most guests will get as much enjoyment out of cooking in the Cook's Country House as we did. It has most every appliance you could want. The professional-grade washer and dryer in the basement were also convenient, especially after muddy hikes!
We have spent time in the area of Vermont before and love it. It is really peaceful and remote. The Merck Farm Center up the road has great hiking trails as well as farm meat for sale. The Barn Restaurant in West Pawlet is the best (almost worth the trip alone). The neighbors in Rupert are very friendly. People crossed the street to meet our dog (she's never received so many compliments at once!) and introduce themselves. It's a lovely house in a lovely town.
We hope to stay here again--and we have referred this rental to several friends.
Everything was wonderful!! The house was so comfortable and pretty. Great for a family with lots to do in the area. Owner and the property manager are terrific! Really can't be a better place to rent in Vermont
We just got back from an amazing long weekend in Rupert, Vt. The Cooks Country home is so awesome and is by far the most accommodating home we have ever rented. We went with 4 couples and filled the house with laughter and fun and would go back in a heart beat! the house has every accommodation you could possibly need, the front porch is the bonus, long nights rocking on the porch with great company and conversation! the kitchen was unbelievable and we thouroughly enjoyed every moment we had in it. The yard is beautiful and private. Every day we were dropped off little goodies by a local bakery which was soooooo nice and thoughtful! We look forward to going back in the near future! Thanks Christine for an awesome stay we won't ever forget!
We gathered family and friends for a Skidmore College graduation (yay Emma!) and couldn't have had a better stay, or more warm and inviting accomodations. Foodies will find everything they need. The area has some of the finest restaurants in Vermont, and everything one might need in Manchester, but even Saratoga Springs (famous for the horse racing, mineral springs, spas and resorts) is close at 34 miles. Surrounding are rural, scenic beautiful rolling hills. The Battenkill River and Orvis headquarters will fulfill the fisherman's greatest wishes. And what better place to celebrate an event? The house has everything one could need and I am sure will be the centerpiece of many family gatherings to come-- We will return often. And the owners could not be more generous or gracious. The setting for Cook's Country will be the setting for your own special reunion or just the perfect getaway.
We had a wonderful time at the Cook's Country House in Rupert VT. We were a group of 7 women who love to travel, shop, cook and eat. The house is perfect for a group and well stocked in the kitchen as you would expect. Imagine our surprise when we checked in and found a lovely loaf of local bread, homemade cookies and a pie waiting for us! We cooked all of our meals when we returned from our shopping excursions to Manchester. The beds were comfortable, the linens lovely and the scenery around the area was beautiful, even in April. Thanks to all who make this wonderful house available to us!

Magical country farmhouse in the rural town of Rupert, Vermont. This massive home was just perfect for our week in Vermont/New York. Rupert borders Salem, NY (just 5 or 6 miles away). Perfect for Pawlet, Dorset, and Manchester (just 20 minutes away). Cook's kitchen with adjoining dining room that will seat 12. Fireplace in cozy living room and 4 beautiful bedrooms upstairs. Yes - this is where Cook's Country is filmed - it was fun having people stop by to see if we were filming. This was our 4th year here and we will be back. Wonderful on arrival goodies and all requests were met with a smile.
The farmhouse is 10 minutes from Dorset, 20 minutes from Manchester and only 40 minutes from Bromley and 50 minutes from Stratton Mountain. Dorset is home to the Dorset Inn (excellent food served in the Tavern), summer theater at the Dorset Playhouse, and Pelletier’s general store with homemade breads, doughnuts, pastries, and general merchandise. Manchester, a short drive away, has extensive shopping, dining, the best Italian deli in New England (Al Ducci’s), and plenty of entertainment options.
Surrounding area activities include hiking, cycling, tubing, golf, horseback riding/shows, antiquing, outlet shopping, summer theatre, assorted other arts and area festivals and more. A former railroad bed, now a walking/hiking trail, is just a short walk away, offering over 20 miles of fabulous Vermont landscapes.
