The River House Guest House is an historic guest cottage fully renovated and modernized and is located within a fenced 20 acre estate property which fronts the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. The rental has been designed for couples as a romantic get away or for those who want a peaceful, quiet place for a working retreat. It sleeps 2 adults, but can accommodate a third with rollaway bed. The property is surrounded by National Forest and land largely protected by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. It is peaceful, private, and has spectacular views of both Massanutten Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountains from the same vantage point.

The cottage contains one thousand square feet of living space and has 1 bedroom with a king bed, a living room which includes a desk and art table, a dining room with gas fire place, 1 full bath, and a large, fully furnished kitchen with dishwasher. There is a screened front porch with rockers, a rear deck with table and chairs, and a patio with a hot tub and gas grill. There are fire pits and picnic tables at two locations, on the river front and just below the patio in the back of the cottage. Firewood is available on the premises. The property has 1000 feet of river frontage on the Shenandoah and also has two large spring fed ponds. The property includes 20 acres and is fenced and gated. Why Michael and Dilka Slivinski chose Luray

Owner acquired this historic property to renovate and restore it. The main house was built by Israel Burner, a German immigrant, around 1860-1870, settling in the area known at that time as Burner's Bottom. The guest cottage was built in the early 1900's, and has been fully modernized and rebuilt. The Burner's originally owned around 5000 acres - the property now encompasses about 20 acres along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River.

What makes this cottage unique

The setting is spectacular, the main house is nestled in a small valley with excellent views of both Massanutten Mountain and The Blue Ridge Mountains. Much of the surrounding property is either National Forest or land which is protected by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation, so it is a wonderful place to rest and relax, enjoy great views while sitting by the fire or along the river bank.

A Beautiful and Unforgettable Getaway

  • 5 of 5
This is most definitely towards the end of the road less traveled... And to me, that was a selling point! The pictures almost do the place justice - but you just have to be there to truly enjoy the clean, crisp air, the subtle sounds of nature all around, and the unmistakable feeling of really being "away from it all." The guest house is very nicely appointed, and well maintained - as are all of the grounds, which given the size and scope of the place, is quite impressive. The owners were very friendly, even checking in with us and trying to help resolve a minor problem with the satellite TV reception. I would certainly recommend this to any friends or relatives looking for a nice getaway from the every day. (But the TV and Wi-Fi are still there if you don't want to be totally unplugged.) We stocked up on food at the Food Lion in Luray on the way in, so we didn't have to leave at all after we arrived. The kitchen had everything you could possibly want to cook with, and the Weber grill was fantastic. The hot tub was just right for relaxation, and some great star gazing. We also took advantage of the fire pit down by the river. That made for a really nice final evening. All in all, it's a great place. We very much look forward to going back!

Quiet, relaxing, and well-appointed

  • 5 of 5
Enjoyed a few days & nights at this house. The place is as shown in the photos. The internet & cable worked well, and there were many premium cable channels / HD channels. Kitchen has all sorts of items for cooking, a great view, and the option to eat outside on the front or back areas. Just need your own sheets & towels & toiletries. Walked to the Shenandoah River further down the driveway past the house, and set up a portable hammock (the hammock was mine, not part of the house). Did not use the fire pit or hot tub. Picked fresh raspberries nearby along a road/path.

Note the house is on a dirt road, about 5 or 6 miles after the paved road changes to dirt. Mobile phone coverage, as expected, was not there for Verizon or TMobile - ask if your carrier works there at the time of your stay. As the other review says, bring your food as the shopping is 30-40 minutes away. On the way you will pass a tubing outfitter place.

GPS was able to find the house, but it was different than the "GPS location" sent to me, so just be ready to keep driving if needed on the dirt road. The white fence is easy to see, and the road ends a mile or so later.

The owner was friendly (only spoke on the phone), and nicely mailed me a forgotten charger after my stay as well!

Amazing, remote, beautiful mountain property!

  • 5 of 5
I am not kidding when I say this is my favorite property I have ever stayed in off of Home Away or VRBO. We have stayed in at least 4 properties in the last few years besides this one on the East Coast. This house is the perfect getaway for two if you are looking for a romantic escape. It has a hot tub, fire pits, a smoker, a BBQ and is right next to the Shenandoah River. There are two fishing lakes on the property and the mountain views are constantly changing and stunning. Also, the owners Michael and Dilka checked in with us and then let us be - perfect! A gorgeous property, mountain views and, best of all, very updated inside. It has current appliances, pots, pans, kitchenware, dishes, etc. etc. Literally, the only thing you need are your clothes, food to cook, shampoo and towels/bed sheets - they have everything else. The property has a historic barn on it as well which is stunning. Was not occupied when we were there, not sure if it is at other times. Even if it was, that barn had it's own BBQ/screen house for sitting outside. Just stop at the grocery store on your way down (45 minutes away otherwise) and get ready to relax. About 35 minutes from Luray Caverns if that is your thing too. I can't wait to go back. Suzanne, New Jersey
