One of the highlights of our holiday in Santorini was being able to enjoy the stunning views from the terrace of our cave apartment whilst eating breakfast and other meals. We also enjoyed a soothing selection of music in the cave whilst we enjoyed a glass or two of wine in the evenings! Katerina was very welcoming and very helpful in suggesting things for us to do and organising a wine tour for us.
Although we were slightly restricted in activities due to early season, we found it was very pleasant to be in Santorini in warm but relatively mild temperatures in April. We also benefitted from the fact that there are far fewer tourists at this time of year. We recommend the walk from Oia to Fira via Imerovigli. The views are amazing and the walk is not too strenuous (good footwear recommended!) We also enjoyed the walk up from Perissa to Ancient Thira.
We chose not to rent a car so relied on the buses to get around the island. We found the bus service to be very good with all buses running on time. However, as expected, there are fewer buses running at that time of year compared with high season.
To find the best prices for food and drink, it is worth staying away from the tourist hotspots as you pay a lot more for smaller quantities. The food on the whole was very good but it was a little disappointing that a lot of the restaurants had only frozen fish on their menus (This was a lesson to us to read the small print at the back of the menu!)
As Santorini is a volcanic island, the gradients are undulating with many cobbled streets. This may make some areas inaccessible to wheelchairs and buggies.
We were there for 6 days and all in all it was a relaxing time away. There was a lot for us to do but at the same time we didn't feel rushed to get around and see everything. It was a lovely holiday and we would recommend it to any couples looking for a romantic getaway!
