We have lived in the neighborhood for many decades. We enjoy everything San Francisco has to offer from the people to the shops and restaurants of the neighborhood to the music to life around a large beautiful bay with access to miles of beautiful ocean coastline. We have worked in the area and between us have enjoyed hiking, biking, golfing, sailing, tennis, cooking, writing classes, museums, nature hikes, urban hikes and more.
We developed the look and feel of this home over many years to bring out the beauty of the Victorian while adding warmth and style that will enhance any stay in Bernal Heights in San Francisco.
Bernal Heights reflects many wonderful sensibilities of San Francisco, from the love of food and art to culture and history. It offers a small town feel and at the same time well blended with overall San Francisco life. This is the experience both in the sweeping views where you can see downtown in the distance with Twin Peaks and Bernal Hill sloping off in either direction as well as in the superb taste of fresh foods, music and art available right our your door.
You will love the warmth of our home, cooking up meals in the gourmet kitchen while gazing at Bernal hill, enjoying your favorite music on an exquisite audio set up and most important enjoying your master bedroom with views, a fire in the fireplace and an incredible spa bathroom that will enrich your San Francisco experience and make you feel you belong. A surprise to us that travelers love is the flyway created by Bernal hill for a variety of birds to take wing - a master show outside a large window in the master bedroom - right from the bed! Hawks, sparrows, blackbirds, seagulls, and hummingbirds share this flyway creating a spectacular show.
The house is filled with carefully hand selected wood that creates cabinets, doors and panels. For foggy days, the wood combined with the tiles and lighting invoke warmth and a comfortable home base. Whether you are staying in for the day or taking off to view the city sites or beyond to a coastal cruise or wine county tour, the apartment is the perfect home. Visitors and people working in the area for a period of time have felt charmed by the area and have enjoyed relaxing and living in this craftsman Zen Victorian as an integral part of their stay.
Bernal Heights is a neighborhood where you can enjoy living like a native as soon as you arrive. At the intersection of Noe Valley and the Mission, it is a short walk to the Valencia Corridor. Several public transportation options makes it easy to get to many points of the city. Known for it's great restaurants, Bernal is in the heart of the most current food movement. Restaurants, cafes, farmers markets, fish and meat shops, specialty stores are all within walking distance. Walking and running in the neighborhood is pleasant and if you like hills, you can get spectacular views! Urban hikes right out your door offer great exercise and an intimate encounter with this great city. All kinds of cultural experiences from the opera, symphony, theater and arts are reachable by BART within less than a half an hour. Museums are speckled throughout the city. Golden Gate Park is stunning as is Ocean Beach. Golfing, biking, hiking, tennis and many other activities are all nearby.
You can have the most pleasant experience by combining a walk, museum visit and eating at a restaurant.
You can get to wine county, Muir Woods to see the great redwood forests or slip down the coast to Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz and Monterey.
You can also head inland several hours to visit the grandness of Yosemite National Park or Lake Tahoe famous for skiing in winter and water sports in summer.
San Francisco is famous for street festivals such as the Fillmore Jazz Festival (July) and the free 3-day Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park (a gift to the city from the late philanthropist Warren Hellman) . San Francisco hosts countless film festivals and wine and flower shows. Art is abound in this great city from the painted murals of the Mission District (walkable from the apartment) to the galleries of known and lesser known painters and sculptors to fine art from across the world and across the ages at our fine museums including the Asian Art Museum, the De Young and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Dancing is found in a variety of places citywide - salsa, tango, swing, west coast swing and more are alive and well on many of San Francisco's night clubs and dance halls.
If you like to get out of the city there are numerous places to go in addition to the aforementioned areas. And example is that you can slip down the coast to stay in a bed and breakfast in the little town of Pescadero, an old former fishing and farming village that still has organic farming, goat farms and where seafood is central to their lives. You can tool along the coast here and visit fantastic tide pools, drift wood cities and a bird sanctuary. Or you can cruise down the road to Año Nuevo State Park where in the winter you can hike out to see the elephant seals mating or catch some whale watching.
In Northern California you always have a choice of following beloved beaten paths to wonderful places such as Napa Valley or Carmel or you can carve out your own. You can even combine the two.
You can explore going north from San Francisco to hike Mount Tamalpais (even on a day hike from the apartment) or to continue further north to explore Stinson Beach or Bodega Bay ending up where the great Russian River, which courses it's way through forests of redwoods ends up spilling into the ocean at Jenner-By-The-Sea. Rather than backtrack you can find places to stay and then follow the river and the small river towns out to a freeway, creating a fantastic loop to head back to the city.
There are many others of these imaginative trips. Or you can always stay in the city of San Francisco, live like a local, and fill your days and nights with the rich sites, sounds and experiences of a city unlike any in the world. Even quiet evenings in Bernal Heights will fill you with a sense that something extraordinary is really happening here!
