At the ripe old age of 19, my wife and I moved to Vermont from the midwest. No job, no college degree and 7 days of marriage under our belts We had no idea of where to live or how we'd make a living. More than 30 years later, much has changed (2nd wife, I'm now living in New York...) but my profound love of Vermont's beauty, character and independent spirit is stronger than ever. The early years taught me the value of building relationships and accepting people of all walks of life - and fortunately, most Vermonters feel the same way. You may be less judged by your work or educational background and more by the number of cords of firewood you put up for the winter. It's this kind of environment that allowed me to meet the right person at the right time who owned the orchard on Cider Mill Road. I was very fortunate to buy a piece of land 10 years ago on one of the prettiest streets in the county. Here a self taught carpenter can build a house without a blueprint or a clear idea of what it wants to look like. The house has evolved over 10 years from being a single mans workshop, office and apartment, to a married mans 2nd home and vacation rental. Now that I live in New York, the importance of keeping the connection back to this home and the community is even more important. Bringing my wife and kids here for a ski trip at the Snow Bowl, hiking the mountains in the fall or sharing time with friends around a bonfire is undoubtedly the greatest joy I know. I hope you'll feel the same way whether it's your first visit or your 50th!

MEMORABLE FAMILY WEEKEND

  • 5 of 5
My husband, daughter and my 83 year old mother stayed at this delightful Middlebury Carriage House to celebrate our son's winter graduation. It was the perfect place to relax in between festivities, so close to the College and we had some wonderful family dinners. The house is immaculate, the showers are fabulous, the kitchen is both beautifully organized and well-equipped. Plenty of room for all to have private time, yet the open kitchen-living area is great for a gathering. We loved the views from all directions. Would recommend it in any season and hope to return.

A TRULY CIVILIZED VACATION ABODE

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I spent a month in this lovingly and expertly designed and crafted house, situated in the midst of an old apple orchard (our daughter baked a pie and made applesauce when she visited). The neighbor to the south keeps a herd of donkeys, should you happen to be into mid-sized animals.

The owner lives at a distance but is very responsive to renters' needs. When the fridge went out, he called us from Alaska, where he was traveling. By then the housekeeper had brought a chest with 40 pounds of ice in it, called a repairman who was there the next day, and provided a small backup refrigerator in case the primary one went out again (it didn't).

This was as civilized a vacation rental experience as one could ask.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review! It's always a pleasure to have thoughtful folks stay and enjoy the house and surroundings. Sometimes things go wrong - like a refrigerator on the fritz. I'm fortunate to have a great support team of housekeepers and caretakers to come in at a moments notice to handle any unforeseen issues; It's especially reassuring come winter time; although getting snowed in for a long weekend could be fun too!

WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE?

What's not to love?
  • 5 of 5
My husband and another couple stayed for a long weekend w/ our dogs. From the moment we pulled up onto the property we were in love. The house is absolutely fantastic! Beautiful layout, CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN, the house was fully equipped and the owner Noel is a complete doll! We rent homes 3xs a year and they have been wonderful but this is by far our favorite! We will be back again soon! Thank you!

GREAT PLACE TO RELAX!

  • 5 of 5
Our family spent the Christmas and New Year holidays at this house in Cornwall this year. There was plenty of private space, the kitchen was well-equipped, and the details in the house's architecture were just beautiful. The town of Middlebury -- a five minute drive -- is one of our favorites. We got lots of snow while there, and the driveway plowing was prompt. We found everything we were expecting and more here. Highly recommend!

MIDDLEBURY CARRIAGE HOUSE IS SPECTACULAR

  • 5 of 5
Everything about this rental was absolutely perfect. To begin, the land it's on -- about 8 or so acres -- is beautiful and pristine, and the view from across the road is gorgeous. The house itself is clean and extremely comfortable, and it has everything you could possibly need. You'd be silly to stay anywhere else if you're looking for a Vermont getaway.

ELEGANT AND WARM

  • 5 of 5
This rental is everything you would want: it was impeccably clean, the kitchen was beautifully equipped, the owners had clearly extended a great deal of time and made wonderful and unique style decisions. It was cozy without being too personal, and there was a wonderful open feeling of space which the photos do not adequately display.

The three bedrooms are on three floors, so that a shared weekend for three couples would be possible. The entry was welcoming and spacious with lots of room for bags, skis, or the apples you picked up the road. The open porch is well suited for morning or evening coffee (we saw a hummingbird go by), the laundry is accessible and well laid out. Some bedrooms have A/C for a humid New England fall, and the whole house has great cross-breezes and screens.

To take advantage of this rental you will need to have a car (or a bicycle and a good pair of legs), as it is out in the country. But it is just a hop and a skip from Middlebury College and has easy access to the interstate nearby. We used it while assisting our college student with an early move-in - I would have been happy to stay and enjoy the surroundings for several more days.

The owner was availble by email, communicative and very reasonable in all our dealings. Housecleaning staff was nearby. We are very likely to return. Please feel confident in making this booking - our expectations were met or exceeded in every category.

Note that there are stairs to access the main floor/kitchen for anyone with mobility issues.

Map

Middlebury is in the heart of the Champlain Valley and accessible to many activities! The college town offers great restaurants, galleries, shopping, theatre and movies. Cultural and sporting venues are close at hand. Several ski resorts are less than 1 hour away - but you won't need to stay in a cramped condo at the end of the day. Winter and summer climbing in the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks are superb. Lake Champlain is 10 minutes west. Burlington is 45 minutes with all the goods a small city has to offer.
