A True Beach House

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from Barbados where we spent 5 nights at this wonderful cottage on the beach. We were pleasantly surprised by how spacious it was. There are 2 great covered outdoor porches, with both having stunning views of the ocean. We are all in our 50's ( 3 siblings and spouses) so we spent a lot of time reading, using the WiFi, and enjoying the constant breeze while just sitting outside.

It is not fancy and is quite remote. It is quite different than the west side of the island where it can be quite crowded and hectic.

The bedrooms on the main floor are extremely comfortable and the shower has better water pressure than many 5 star hotels. There are 4 single beds in the upstairs loft but really this space suits 2 adults or children.

The cottage was extremely clean. The pictures don't really do this cottage justice. It is on such a great lot which is entirely fenced. We always felt completely safe as the cottage has security windows and doors for when you turn out the lights. It is also very well lit outside.

Watching the sun rise was something we looked forward to every morning with our coffee. Local fishermen would often be seen on the beach but other than that it is your own private paradise!!! It is so nice just to be able to walk out and swim right in your own yard.

It is also situated right on a great hiking trail that runs along the ocean. We walked 40 minutes north to MArtins Bay where we had a fantastic fresh fish lunch at MArtin Bay Tavern. It was easy hiking and very scenic.

There is also a great little place a few hundred yard away at the Bath Beach Park that serves lunch. It is operated by Charlene who made us feel right at home and we had many Banks beers and Hamburgers there.

I could go on and on. It is rustic, but comfortable. The owner, Severine, is great at answering questions quickly and is very helpful. It is a very special place... we are

going back next year!!

TIP.. Get groceries at Emerald City on your way. The car rental people will tell you where it is.

Beautiful in Barbados!

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at Dunworkin' for two weeks in June. From the initial contact Steve and Severine were excellent hosts providing information about their cottage and car rentals and answering all our questions. They were there if we needed but in no way intruded on our stay. The cottage was immaculate when we arrived and is as described with everything you need; a complete kitchen, lots of towels, comfortable beds, a huge barbeque, beautiful views from the front porch, fast internet and a wonderful shower. Severine provided fresh sheets half way through our visit although there was a washing machine there too. We found it private, peaceful and tranquil, and in such a beautiful, well maintained setting which helped us relax, unwind and enjoy a true holiday. The fenced yard would be perfect for younger children with clean sand and play equipment. We awoke each morning to the sunrise and the cool ocean breezes - never once were we too hot. The beach in front of the cottage was perfect for a nice dip and we were in it every day, washing off in the refreshing outdoor shower afterwards. We rented a car (recommended) and had a wonderful time exploring the East coast of the island. There was a great grocery store about 15 minutes away with some farmers' market stands, fast food chicken and burgers (Chefette) and a great little library that offers visitor permits. We enjoyed walking on the trail at the end of the beach to Martin's Bay. I would recommend this cottage to anyone and I would happily stay here again. If you are looking for a clean, 'no-frills', self-catering cottage on the East coast this is the place for you. I am grateful to our hosts for sharing their family treasure with us.

Rustic and peaceful property right on the beach.

  • 4 of 5

We had a most peaceful and relaxing 5 days at this lovely property, and the location couldn't have been more perfect. It was just what I imagined it would be living right on the beach. Luckily the owners live next door with their lovely little children, but we didn't hear them at all and they didn't interfere with our holiday at all. To the contrary, they were at hand a few times when we wanted to ask their advice about the area, or when we needed extra sun loungers. Very obliging.

In my opinion their description is mainly accurate, but I would have to add that the second bedroom is a lot smaller and somewhat cramped for a second couple if you're used to a hotel style room, but this is Barbados and it is listed as rustic. That said, it was all perfectly clean and well maintained, and the owners couldn't have been more helpful. I would certainly recommend it.

We hired a car for the entire holiday, so had no trouble getting about. It's worth visiting Hunte's Garden, Barbados Wildlife Reserve (a rather quirky zoo), the Round House restaurant for a delicious evening meal in Bathsheba, and many of the beautiful beaches and coves. Bottom Bay has the most amazing turquoise waters.

Don't just sunbathe on the beach all day, get out there and explore.

As Advertised!

Our family (Myself, my wife, three kids, and grandmom (4th kid)) spent a wonderful 11 days at "Dunworkin" cottage. We could not have asked for a better visit to the wonderful island of Barbados. We have taken to exploring the islands of the Caribbean for the past few years and it's quite rare that we leave an island and universally agree that we need to go back. Steve and Severine (as well as the kids!!) were wonderful hosts and did everything in their power to ensure our stay was all it could be (Steve even provided a cell phone to use to contact him for any reason whatsoever).

We alternated days of lounging on Bath Beach (Grandma's favorite on the island) and exploring the island. Barbados is the largest island we have been on thus far and is about the perfect size for exploring by car. We rented a van and had the fun of figuring out the "Barbados in a Nutshell" road map (have fun with that!). It's fairly accurate but watch out for unmarked roundabouts and roads that are "highways" that visibly look like a back alley. Be careful driving at night and watch for pedestrians on the road. At the end of the day you are on an island so it really is hard to get lost. We picked up fish at the markets in Oistens, Speightstown, and Holetown and grilled them at home. We dined at Juma's in Speightstown and Lobster Alive! in Carlisle Bay. Our best day at a beach (other than Bath) was at Enterprise (also known as Miami). Definitely enjoy a Rum Punch and some fish at the little stand off of Enterprise (the other side of Miami beach where the Mangrove trees are on the beach). Our Rum Punch competition came down to this little stand and the Jolly Rodger in Bridgetown (Jolly Rodger won... barely). We enjoyed these after heading out on a "Coolrunnings" catamaran ride. This is highly recommended and was one of the highlights of the trip. We couldn't imagine a better day on a boat - snorkeling, swimming, flips and dives off the boat, and a catered lunch. Spectacular!

At the end of the road at Bath Beach is a very nice trail (the Bath trail). I ran it several times with my wife and son up to Martin's Bay. Steve informed me that it goes up through Bathsheba and Cattle Wash all along the east coast of the island. My son (who's 11) thought it would be cool to return someday and run the length of it. This will definitely be on the itinerary next time.... which won't be soon enough!

Beautiful Bath

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a wonderful week in Barbados at Dunworkin. If you want a truly local experience away from the run of the mill resorts, this is the place for you! Don't expect a fancy room and pricey meals, this is a place you can really relax, get back to basics, and appreciate the simple things in life. All necessities are included, the accommodation is clean and spacious. We walked the beach at least once a day, delightful, there's nothing like walking a few steps and having a whole beach to yourselves. Anyone we met was friendly.

We highly recommend the coastal path walk to Martins Bay, fantastic views, and we had a memorable visit to St Nicholas Abbey, great staff! There's so much to see and do in Barbados, nothing is far away and the driving is fairly easy, so if you do want that meal out there are good restaurants a short drive away.

The supermarket at Emerald City has a nice variety of local produce. We cooked flying fish one night and barbequed local lamb another, both with local veggies, yum!

What can we say about Steve and Severine? You could not find more pleasant and helpful hosts. Steve even gave us a recommendation to David Stoutes car rental who kindly gave us a discount. The children are great as well, we enjoyed meeting them. They don't intrude but at the same time you feel very welcome. No fuss, just sit back and enjoy!

Relax and wind down

  • 5 of 5

If you want to get away and relax (I mean really relax!) "Dunworkin" is the place to go! A lot of Bajans think that they have to travel overseas or go to other Caribbean Islands to take a break - avoid all the hassle and enjoy our beautiful island. "Dunworkin" in Bath is the place to go. The house is spacious, clean and comfortable and the best part - it is right on the beach - no road to cross! My daughter and I picked the place because we loved the location and the owner is living right next door (which also makes you feel safe). We watched breath-taking sunrises and enjoyed the tranquility. The owner Steve and his family are great company, very easy to talk to and helpful in every way. When it was time for us to go home, we both did not want to leave but one thing made our departure easier... I am already planning for my next stay at "Dunworkin". See you soon Steve!
