The Upper West Side serves as a great home base for visitors looking for an authentic New York City experience. Primarily a residential neighborhood, it provides an escape from the chaos of Midtown and other heavily touristed areas. The area is famous for lovely tree-lined streets and brownstone buildings, many of which are landmarks. Elegant pre-war buildings line Broadway, Central Park West, Riverside Drive, and West End Avenue. One of the most famous is The Dakota, where John Lennon was shot, and Yoko Ono still lives.
It is a great neighborhood for shopping, especially at gourmet stores, like Zabar's and Fairway and is a train hop away from the shops at Columbus Circle.
The restaurant offerings in the area are plentiful. Café Luxembourg is the blueprint for a faultless urban restaurant with the execution of its familiar, well-edited menu, reasonable prices and unflappable staff. Enjoy tea and a sandwich at the charming Alice's Tea Cup and don't miss the heavenly banana pudding around the corner at Magnolia Bakery!
